Sam Smith: Stay With Me Meaning
Song Released: 2014
Stay With Me Lyrics
Guess it's true, I'm not good at a one-night stand
But I still need love cause I'm just a man
These nights never seem to go to plan
I don't want you to leave, will you hold my hand?
[Chorus:]
Oh, won't you stay with me?
Cause...

#1 top rated interpretation:For me I find that this song is about a man who decides to have a one night stand (note the first words of the song). I believe that he finds that love out of a one-night stand never works, but he may be a broken soul who is looking for someone to heal the wounds that he may have from past relationships. Through his loneliness I believe that he is seeking comfort, even if it is with the woman that he has no intentions of getting in a relationship with. She is all he needs in that moment of weakness and loneliness and is the comfort that he has longed for.

#3 top rated interpretation:I view this song to be about a man who needs that person and who loves that person. However, the other person doesn't share his same feelings. He is telling her "stay with me your all I need". He is in love with her and just wants to have her close to him because he loves and needs her. "This ain't love it's clear to see" is him realizing she doesn't share the same feelings but yet he still needs and wants her.

I think this song is relatable in a different way than other people put... the way I see it, he loves the girl who he is with for whatever reason (when he says ‘I’m not good at a one night stand’ I think he’s trying to say he wants a longer term relationship, and that he is tired of one night stands, and that that isn’t what he wants. I don’t think him and her have already had sex, or will.) And because he loves the girl, and because he has been rejected so many times, and because he doesn’t expect her to love him and knows she doesn’t, he is simply pleading to be able to be with her for a while, because it makes him happier and more satisfied than anything else in the world. He knows it isn’t really love because she doesn’t love him back, but he will take this one night and remember it forever, considering himself lucky because he got just one night of his life with the greatest person on earth, which is more valuable to him than anything else he could possibly have. Because of how he feels about her and what is going on inside his head, he desperately needs it more than anything else and so is begging for the one thing that can bring him peace, comfort, and joy, and begging so profoundly because of how he will feel if she says no. He knows that if she leaves him like this that he will be crying himself to sleep for weeks, have no self-worth, and his entire view of the world would be shredded. It’s important to remember that this is because she means the entire world to him. He wishes she could see this, and he kills himself with hubris of thinking that he can get her to feel the same, but knows deep down that his dreams can’t come true. Sam Smith does a great job of expressing this rare emotional tragedy through music. I really believe that listening to this song is one of the only ways that people who haven’t felt these feelings in reality and experienced their crushing grip on the mind can get a glimpse at understanding what it is like. If you know anybody who has shared similar feelings with you before, know that being a good friend to them is great. All it shows about them is the ability to deeply feel and express emotion and this is a trait of surmount importance which is underembraced in our culture. Listen to this song a good 7 or 8 times, it’s good for you!

He's lonely. It's not just a one-night stand. He wants her to stay and to feel her warmth to drown out his loneliness. He knows it's not love. He just wants someone's warmth to last.

According to Smith, "the song is about the moment in the morning after a one night stand, where the person you are with leaves your house, and you are left by yourself, and it's just a second, where you are just like: 'I wish, I wish'. You don't even love them, you don't really fancy them that much, it's just nice to have someone in the bed next to you."[4] The song won the Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, and in his acceptance speech for winning the Record of the Year, Smith said that "I want to thank the man who this record is about who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys."
Sorry to hear about your difficult situation. Peace out -
I know its full meaning because I have been there.
And when I looked into Sam Smith's gender identity, I quickly understood that feeling because it is as if I was him.
It's not all about the sex in a relationship.
Let's put it into a scene where both is a man, one is considered closet and the other straight. This closeted guy will do anything to become his friend and maybe more than that. They got into a bonding in a friendly way. But as soon as the straight guy feels that his friend is clingy or can feel that he might think his friend is gay, he turns around and would try to get away from him to avoid the relationship from being destroyed or going further.
And that's where the song begins. -
Sam is singing Abt another guy, dudes gay, he wants love but he knows it ain't right
-
He likes her a lot that is all, he knows it's not love. He is obviously incapable of love but he is also very lonely and she is fulfilling his loneliness. He is a narcissist who is only thinking of getting the best of her until he is done..... leave one night stand, this is how he precieve you!!!!! Not necessarily for night stand, rather short term relationships....... very sad for both of them
-
I have turned it around as if a woman were singing it and that's how I feel
-
I am a girl and I relate to this song so much. I never really knew the power of love itself, and not even being in an actual timed relationship and being publicly called a couple... It hurts, in the end, with rejection. I ended things but... I think this song is about fake love. The fact love is in the title makes it so significant. He had fake love, but the few moments he felt it was real, it meant so much. He couldn't let go. Letting go isn't an option in deal with love. There will always be that tension because of that one bond that you and whoever shared.

I think he wants to stay with him forever.

'Stay with me"
An emotional song that is conveying a mans feelings towards love. He wants it, however can't achieve it because he is not only afraid but confused about the meaning of love. He doesn't know how to express himself therefore his relationships only going as far as one night stands, which then concludes to him feeling isolated, unloved and lonely.
Sam Smith, has been able to beautifully portray this sense of fearing love and the fear of being alone. This song is jam packed with emotion and you can here it in the way he sings out the words. This song sends goose bumps over your skin as you hear he cry for help (in love). As he pleads for someone to come and rid of he lonesome and loveless fears.

'Stay with Me'
This song is strong and pulls on the right heart strings as a man who has fallen in love, but has tried to cover it up with one night stands. He is afraid to commit therefore he runs and hides from what could possibly hurt him, but when running from his problems he takes off to women. This causes conflict within himself and cannot determine if one night stands cause more grief then committing to the one he truly loves and cares for.
With so many way to interpret this song, one thing i am certain of is that this some poor out the emotional side of a man as he pours out what he fears and doubts. He doesn't know to do. This so is about an emotional wreck or a man as he pleads and cries out for help and love.
Sam Smith has shown us what a real man looks life. Men don't always know what the want or need and they need to cry out for someone to help them, and that could always blossom to love if the right person helps. Men are just as confused as women are and that makes us all equal. This song has shown the power of emotion and show it through a man's point of view, which challenges us to think about the stereotypical man we always associated males with. A strong, unemotional person who isn't afraid of anything. -
It's about a guy who just can't find the woman he really wants so in the meantime he is being with women on a one night stand basis. He wants to fill the void temporarily but inherently he feels empty and alone and longs for the real deal. The problem is, in the meantime, he is leading a bunch of women on...as they cure his momentary loneliness...until he is on to the next one... until eventually he finds his "one". I wouldn't lay with him. If I were a one night stand...he'd be lying there singing by himself. ;-)

His partner found love in another's arms and/or his one night stand left. The over all message is he needs someone to fill his emptiness.
-
He wants more than just sex he wants love and somone to stay with him.
-
The sadness of a man without someone to love and afraid to give one in return so decided to use one night engagement to cover things up.
