Snow Patrol: Chasing Cars Meaning

Album cover for Chasing Cars album cover

Chasing Cars Lyrics

We'll do it all
Everything
On our own

We don't need
Anything
Or anyone

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

I don't quite know
How to say
How I feel

Those three words
Are said too...

This can be any type of deep relationship, even best friends. For me it's God. He is perfect and He does want to just spend time with you like you would with a boyfriend or a best friend, and that's what this song is about. He will always love us no matter what.

Hey, English is not my "first language" so I have little troubles with this lyrics. I don't understand:

    Let's waste time
    Chasing cars
    Around our heads

Does the writer says: shall we waste the time and chase cars, which are around our heads( of course "cars" is metahapor of something)
or he just want to say; let's waste time- there're chasing cars around our heads, so we can waste time.

    And:

    those three words
    are said to much
    they're not enough

So- Does he mean, that I LOVE YOU means too much, or this words are not enough? Because the first sentence ( are said too much) is negation of the second sentence( they're not enough) or maybe it is: those three words are said too much THAN not enough, not: THEY'RE ???

    Please, answer!

    Greetings:)

This song is played at your funeral. It's what you want to tell everyone in the world about your life.

Everyone that posted an interpretation about being in love with someone is completely WAY off. Read the lyrics and think about what it is you want to let everyone know when you're dead. Every word is exactly what you want to say. When you're alive, love is every where but not said enough.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

I might be wrong but I think it's about someone who died. I think when he says "if I just lay here, will you lay with me and just forget the world" he's talking about someone he loved, who died, so he wants to be with the person again, so he wants the person to lay with him, and not listen to any one/thing else. And he knows its impossible so its called chasing cars because he will always lay waiting for the person to come to him, but it will probably never happen.

In finishing, when someone is in love, they want to lay down with their one love, and forget everything surrounding them, they are soul mates, the relationship is effortless, and seamless, it needs nothing but each others grace, and . They truly need each other, but one might not be able to open themselves to the other again, because of something that hurt them both deeply. Those three words, are not enough I've said to much symbolize the words I Love You, anyone can say it, over and over, but to be able to feel it and hold onto it, in every kiss, every caress, every hug, is too really feel it, and one can only feel that with their soul mate. I only want my soul mate to share my deepest passion and pure desire. I only want to feel that "ONE" love.

The lyrics of this song can fit anyone's inner desire and strong passion for their soulmate, their one and only true love. It's about only wanting that one true person in their life and being with them in the moment. Also, when they are able to meet, all they need, is to be together, or look into each others eyes, and feel each others grace that make them so fit for each other, because they don't need to change anything about themselves for one or the other to love them it just works. This song also had a huge impact on me for the loss of some loved ones, in their darkest hours, fighting a terminal illness, or suicide,i would of "just layed there with them" and stayed by their side thru the difficult hours, and just forgot about the world to carry them thru their despair. i could interpret this song to fit anyone i've loved or love, but my deepest passon and interpretation of this song is to my soulmate who I can't be with because of something that took us apart. So now and forever I interpret this song as follows, I'm without my soulmate, I can't be with him, so my only other deep passion is my faith in Jesus, if my soulmate can't be with me, the spirit and passion of my Lord can be...and always will be... until we meet again my love, that's how I feel this song.

This song is about true love, a love you find once in a life time, (one unfortunately found with the right person at the wrong time)and they just want to lay there forever in that moment because of the others in their life, they had to walk way. By laying there they will always keep that feeling going (which will never go away even though they are not together). They don't know where or how as well, they just know that these things(feelings) will never change and someday they will experience that garden bursting into life with their "special friend"... because they are all that I am, all that I ever was and is in their perfect eyes...there all I see, every moment of every day. k:)

The only relationships I've had complete confidence in to "never change" are those with my dogs. This song is about the dudes dog. (maybe passed on or very old)

Every time I hear this song it makes me cry. For me, It's about someone finding perfect comfort from their old dog(after he had a bad day at work or went through trouble with family or friends). My little mixed breed dog passed away at the age of almost 18 shortly before I heard this song for the first time. He used to just snuggle up with me and help me forget the world. I saw the best in myself through his eyes and I never did know, really, how to say to others how I felt and still do feel about him.

i think it's just the most simplist and beautiful of ways to say 'those three words' i love you. And asking if they feel the same.

    From the 2 lines:

"Forget what we're told, before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life. "

I believe this song is about the forbidden gay love. First line is about forbidden love. The second line is about love not approved by god. The garden here is Eden. He challenges anyone who could prove to him the existence of god.

This song is my girlfriends and my anthem. Its about living in the here and now, not worrying about what pressures society puts on us, not needing to be who everyone else wants you to be, not worrying that our love is wrong, just the fact thats its love should matter, who cares if we're gay. and even if these three words aren't enough, I love you Alice

Did anyone ever think that this may be a song about a man and God? Look at the video where he lies in the field, forgetting the world, and stares into the majestic sky as if to be seeking or talking to God. He asks Him to lay with him yet he doesn't know what to say to Him. He asks for His Grace to find himself and then realizes all he ever was, was here in Your "perfect eyes". The only one with perfect eyes is God. Find your soul and who you are meant to be here on earth and don't waste time chasing worldly things like cars and houses.

This song is about a world of pain and suffering, and two people caught up in the middle, deeply in love.

One person is expressing to the other if they can just have a moment together where they can feel for a second that they love each other, because in a few minutes everything could be gone.

I love this song as well and I agree with the Feb 3rd 08 submission except they don't come from different worlds - they come from the same world but because of the many others in their lives they will for now be "Chasing Cars". They charish the times they laid there and forgot about the world and they just want to lay there forever. He is asking her before they get too old to someday forget what their told(to put their happiness aside to keep their others happy) and one day for her to bring alive for him that garden that is waiting to burst into life with her. When he say's "I dont know where, confused about how as well, just know that these things will never change for us at all" he is saying that someday they will end up together and have that garden that is waiting to burst into life. He just does not know when, where or how. All he knows is that their feeling are real & true and that they will never change for them at all.
