Something Corporate: Konstantine Meaning
Konstantine Lyrics
And the places that you go
When the lights are turned down low
And I don't understand
All the things you've seen
But I'm slipping in between
You and your big... dreams
it's always you and my big...

#1 top rated interpretation:"mcmahon wrote konstantine about his ex (krystal) that's why its konstantine and not constantine. The line "I can spell konfusion with a 'k' " refers to the way krystal is spelt with a k. Mcmahon calls her konstantine because before they split up, she was the only constant in his life. They broke up because andrew's travels with the band became too much for the relationship. This is refered to in the song. Andrew eventually realized that he wanted her, but it was too late and she no longer wanted him."

#2 top rated interpretation:My interpretation about this song is how the lead singer, andrew mcmahon, and his ex-girlfriend krystal. Kostantine is spelled with a k in this song, refering to krystal. The lyrics at one part in the song, "and you tell me that it's over but I can't stand here in a patch of four leaf clovers" is refering to how he cheated on her and she caught him.
"'cause you're afraid to find out all this hope that you had sent into the sky by now had crashed and it did because of me" krystal had so much hope and effort put into their relationship that when she found out he cheated on him, she automatically forgave him and take him back because she didn't want to let go.
"this is because I can spell konfusion with a k and I can like it." refers to her name bring krystal and the k, in krystal isn't very common in a name like hers.
"i'm not your star? Isn't that what you said what you thought this song meant" referring to krystal getting upset not thinking she was the only one for him, torn between the music industry and his love for her.
Towards the end of this song, he explains in song that he misses her a great deal and he would do anything to get her back and he admits that he has hurt her a great deal and he'll understand if she'll never want to take him back.
That's just my explanation of this song, a true masterpiece written. -

#3 top rated interpretation:well the title of the song pretty much explains it all. First love, someone never to forget, always remember and love, always share something. But what the msg in the song is that they are doing different things and can't be together because of it. and the living room part of it I think is based on them fighting and him sleeping in the living room and after the fight apologising in the middle of the night/making love "konstantine is walking down the stairs
doesnt she look good
standing in her underwear
and I was thinking
what I was thinkin
we've been drinkin and it doesn't get me anywhere". It sounds like they argue a lot weather drunk or sober.
confusion with a k I think is meant by the girlfriend krystal is confusing him by wanting him so much but always arguing.
but he has obviously hurt her a lot and made a lot of mistake in their relationship "they'll never hurt you like I do
no they'll never hurt you like I do" I dunno its hard to explain but most people who hear the song definitly understand what it is about -
I actually have always thought this song was about him loving a girl who was too young for him.. "Damn shes so young, well I don't think I care"
And it seemed like he was pressuring her into things.. "And i got thinking, well I was thinking that these nights that we've been drinking no they never got us anywhere".
He felt that her being in love with him was also messing up alot of things for herself, her being young she mightve had all these aspirations that are now dimmed a little by being in a relationship with him. It seemed like when he said "sitting in your livingroom" was something like they could only hangout in her living room as if she lived with her parents "we all need a little room to live". He cheated on her because he couldnt get what he wanted sexually so he cheated and she would still take him back probably from being naive . Idk just what I got from it. I'm surpised no one anywhere mentioned this take on it. -

His gf name was not krystal, I forget exactly what it was but its not krystal, the k in konstantine is because taking out the c and using a k represents imperfection, hes saying ur not perfect, im not perfect, but were obsolutely perfect together, the definition of konstantine is someone you desire with your soul, someone its impossible to live without, thats how he felt about his first ex, he cheated, he knew he messed up, all he wants is her back to him, he wont play the song because its too painful, he said it himself, ppl need to stop asking him to play it.

When he sings "its 11:11 and now you want to talk" it means youve waited to long to talk but now its late and you want to talk. Also when Andrew McMahon sings "Youve been sent into the sky by now had crashed and it did because of me " it means there relanship went plumiting to the pit of the earth.
"I had these drems in them i leared to play guitar maybe cross the country become a rock star and there was hope in me that i could take you there but d***** your so young well i dont think i care" means that he has dreams of becoming a rock star but shes potanaly holding him back. "And konsintine is walking down the stairs oh doesnt she look good stansding in her underware" means that he wishes that he could see her in her underwear i think.... anyways thats my perpective of the song -
his girlfriend's name was kelly...not krystal. they've been together since high school and are now married. don't know where all of you get your facts.

Great interpretations, i haven't actually listened to this song in years and woke up tonight with it in my head and wanted to see what people thought...
the Jimmy Eat World part is actually lyrics from their song For Me this Is Heaven from Clarity (the entire album is incredible and different than all their stuff now) The opening line actually right off is:
"The first star i see, may not be a star, cant do a thing but wait, so let's wait for one more...
"When I'm alone with my big plans
And this is what she said gets her through it:
"If I don't let myself be happy now then when?"
If not now when?
The time we had now ends
And when the big hand goes round again
So, to analyze this song i think it is important to understand the song the writer was into at the time, what he was thinking about. The jimmy eat world song even mentions making big plans as well.
Can you still feel the butterflies?
This song is incredible, hard to believe it was a b-side.
Loved it since i was 17, played guitar since then, now im thinking i should have taken up piano. -
They had a kind of complicated relationship. First, she was a lot younger than he was, and full of ambitions ('Dammit you're so young'/ 'you and your big dreams'). And like many young girls she didn't know what she actually did wanted. This was confusing him so much, because he wanted to share his whole life with her. But he was also hurting her. They loved each other so much, but still they kept hurting each other with their different dreams. They kept breaking each others hearts, he had to sleep in the living room, and they both got drunk to take the pain away. This happened a lot. And than they were sorry again, wanted to talk it over, or they ended up in bed again. Now it's over between them.. and it seems like she's moved on. He has no idea what she's doing right now, but he keeps thinking of her and she keeps him awake at night. HE misses her a lot, and knows somewhere, deep down, she misses her a lot too. Even though it's over, they both know that they're not better off like this. And that's what he's trying to say to her.
I really love this song especially the emotion that's in it. -
I agree with pretty much what everyone says, just wanted to add one thing. The part about "The first star you see may not be a star, I'm not your star, isn't that what you said, what you thought the song meant" is not referring to the song Konstantine but a Jimmy Eat world song, hence the part just before it saying "Jimmy Eat World and those nights in my car where the first star you see..." and so on.

first off this song is amazing. i love songs like this because you can think of your own interpretation of it. to me, this song is about a guy who hurt his girlfriend horrible but still misses her and their relationship. the line "i'm not your star? isn't that what you said, what you thought this song meant" is him telling her that she is the only one for him even if she doesnt think so. and the title of the song "konstantine"....to me reminds me of a guy that i always found myself going back to...my "constant". i think by calling the song konstantine is like him saying she is constantly who he finds himself thinking about and wanting to be with. no matter how many things that went wrong in their relationship.

I always thought this song was about a relationship filled with plenty of ups and downs and Yes, it is about his ex-girlfriend. However, when he says
"I had these dreams, in them I learned to play guitar
Maybe cross the country
Become a rockstar
And there was hope in me
That I could take you there
But damn it you're so young
But I don't think I care
and if I hurt you then i'm sorry
please don't think that this was easy"
It seems like his fame is getting in the way of their relationship, it is somewhat pushing them away from one another. I don't know, it makes sense to me. -
i always think of my x when i hear this song cuz he is so upset of how bad he hurt me and he wants me back so bad. konstantine. "i always catch the clock, its 11:11 and now you wanna talk"
