Taylor Swift: August Meaning
Song Released: 2020
August Lyrics
I never needed anything more
Whispers of "Are you sure?"
"Never have I ever before"
But I can see us lost in the memory
August slipped away into a moment in time
'Cause it was never mine
And I can see us...
-
This song is from the pov of the " other woman "
Lets call her August.
Salt air, and the rust on your door
I never needed anything more
Whispers of "Are you sure?"
"Never have I ever before"
- This prolly indicates that it was first time. It also shows her confusion and vulnerability.
But I can see us lost in the memory
August slipped away into a moment in time
'Cause it was never mine
And I can see us twisted in bedsheets
August sipped away like a bottle of wine
'Cause you were never mine
- But he was never hers and the moment they shared was never there's. She was just a pawn in there ( Betty and James) love game. And there summer 'fling' is over now.
Your back beneath the sun
Wishin' I could write my name on it
Will you call when you're back at school?
I remember thinkin' I had you
- She thought he was hers. She was falling in love when he just missed his ex. She feels as though her feelings and memory betrayed her because she believed that the way she felt was reciprocated.
Remember when I pulled up and said, "Get in the car"
And then canceled my plans just in case you'd call?
Back when I was livin' for the hope of it all (for the hope of it all)
- She was hoping he would call her but he didn't because he went back to her(ex/Betty). And our Augustine is left alone with broken heart and yearning for love.
-
August is for the people with attachment issues. The people who know that something isn't going to last but can't seem to let go so they hold onto it for a period of time. They hold onto these memories that they had with this person because even though they are no longer together, they still find comfort in the memories that they shared together. In the song we have constant repeating lyrics. This can be interpreted as a failed talking stage or a short-lived situationship. A time with someone when the lust outweighed the love and you didn't learn much about the person you were talking to but whatever you did have, you enjoyed and found it thrilling and different. You guys are no longer together but you still replay these memories in your head because it was a happy time period in your life.

On her documentary thing, she talks about August being about a girl named Augusta being part of a love triangle. The other parts of this triangle are seen in Betty and Cardigan. In August, Augusta spends a summer with a guy and she thinks she has a bond with him. He leaves her for Betty. The song Betty is from this guy's point of view. The song Cardigan is from Betty's point of view. Betty and the guy were going out and he cheats on her over the summer with Augusta. Then he goes back and they make up. Augusta is left heartbroken. This song shows that not all girls that help your boyfriend are horrible awful people. This interpretation may be completely wrong, but that's what I think.
