I Heart Questionmark Lyrics

Wish I had concentrated,
They said love was complicated,
But it's something I just fell into.
And it was overrated,
But just look what I created,
I came out alive, but I'm black and blue.
Before you ask me if I'm alright,
Think about what I,...

Teenagers sometimes write the initial of the person they like on their arm. Since they're broken up she writes a question mark on her arm instead of his initial.

I love to try to decode meanings for Taylor Swift songs, they can mean so many different things, heck, any song can. This one is rather tricky, and you have to look pretty close to interpret it well.

    1st verse:

    "Wish I had concentrated,
    They said love was complicated,
But it's something I just fell into."

    - Here she is saying she wish she could've, almost like kept focused on the reality of the situation instead of being in fairy tale world with the guy. People told her love is complicated, which it is, but it was simply something she fell into, meaning she didn't really plan to fall in love, it just kind of happened.

    "And it was overrated,
But just look what I created,
I came out alive, but I'm black and blue."

When saying it was overrated, she means just the whole thing was made a bigger deal than it really needed to be. Yet, even though she now knows how overrated the situation and relationship and break up was, she still sees that she created the mess too. She is saying she came out living, surviving the whole thing, but 'black and blue' she was hurt pretty badly. Think of people who fight in wars and all. If they survive, that is great, but they have scars now that live with them forever, right? (Well not all the time, just trying to make an analogy... )

"Before you ask me if I'm alright,
    Think about what I,
    Had to do... yeah,"

Here, she is explaining that she doesn't want him to ask her about how she is feeling and all. She wants him to think about all the pain he really caused her, not just think about ways to try and go get her back and all. But really, which guys will really sit down and try to put their feet into a girl's shoes?

    Chorus:

"Wake up and smell the break up,
Fix my heart, put on my make-up,
    Another mess I didn't plan.
And I'll bet you thought you beat me,
    Wish you could only see,
    I got an "I Heart ?"
Written on the back of my hand!"

She is continuing from the first verse here, explaining to him what she wants him to sit and think about all the things he put her through. She had to get back up and realize it was over. Not that easy sometimes. . .
She had to put her pieces back together, basically just get back up on her feet which caused her a lot of pain and time. 'Put on my make-up' Now this could mean literally on top of all the pain, time, and stress it took to move on from the break-up she had to put on her make-up too. To me, it could also mean, on top of all the break-up pain, she had to go on with her life and do everything else as usual.

'Another mess I didn't plan' meaning this whole falling in love with this boy, getting into a relationship with him, then dealing with the whole breakup with him and everything, she is simply saying pretty clearly that putting herself back together, fixing her heart and putting her make up on as usual on top of the pain was something she didn't have planned. The whole thing was a big problem and situation avoiding her from moving forward, and she didn't want it to happen, but it did.

'And I'll bet you thought you beat me, wish you could only see me.'

Meaning she would bet anything that the boy who thought he had his little plan all figured out, (maybe one of the ways to interpret it was he had a plan to break up with her then try to get her back) thinks he really does have it all figured out, and that he is ahead of her in the game. Not the case, since she actually beat him and saw through his plan. Hence...

'Wish you could only see ,
    I got an I heart ?,
written on the back of my hand!'

When she says she wishes she could see her with the I heart question mark written on the back of her hand, she wants him to see how she got him figured out. She wants him to see the 'I <3 ?' on her hand to drive him nuts, revenge, it could mean anything you want it to mean. The 'I heart ?' phrase could mean a lot. It could mean she is showing him and showing in general that she has moved on and doesn't know what or who she loves anymore, or how to love, since she barely made it out of that pain and relationship. Or, the ? mark could stand for someone else she now has a crush on, but yet again showing that she has moved on. It could mean a lot of different things.

    2nd verse:

"I'd be fine if you'd just walked by,
But you had to talk about why
You were wrong and I was right."

Here, she is saying and kind of giving us an understanding of where they now stand. "I'd be fine if you'd just walk by" - she is saying she'd be more than happy if he could just drop it all and understand they are over, quit bothering her, say goodbye, leave her be. But instead, he is doing the opposite of that, "But you had to talk about why, You were wrong and I was right." Meaning he keeps telling her, sugar coating her, trying to get her on her good side to get her back, she was right. What person doesn't love to be right? But she doesn't want him to keep talking to her, obviously, she's had it. He keeps trying to keep going through with his whole plan, but she'd rather not let him win, because, like I said before, she beat him, but he doesn't want to accept the fact he did.

"But I can't believe you made me,
Sit at home and cry like a baby,
Wait right by the phone every night."

Here, she is again realizing his faults in hurting her and realizing her own faults in letting him hurt her, by saying she she can't take it in, that he actually got his way and got to her, and hurt her. She would cry and cry and cry, and wait by the phone every living breathing second hoping for the apologies or make up, but now she knows that that was stupid of her to do. No guy is worth her heartache and time like that enough to wait by the phone every night.

"And now you ask about you and I,
    There's no you and I,
Remember what you put me through,
    I had to..."

She is, again, just in a different way, saying he keeps pestering her about her and their previous relationship, but she is responding with, stating her freedom and moved on attitude, "There's no you and I" meaning she has accepted they are done, but he still hasn't gotten it, telling him again to think, try to understand, the pain he caused her by saying, "Remember what you put me through, I had to..."Then as we go back to the chorus and she lists everything that he caused her.

    Chorus : (See above)

    Bridge:

"And when you're home all alone at night,
    You'll still wonder why
You took everything I had, oh baby."

She is saying here, stating, even if he is alone at night, and the air is as clear as it can be for clear thinking to come to him, the boy is still going to wonder why. Simply, why. Why could be anything. In this case, she is saying he is still going to wonder and, hopefully, regret the mistake he made by trying to get away with his little plan of dumping her then trying to go get her back. Not just nessicerily taking away everything they had, their love and everything, but everything SHE had. Her life, her time. He also took that away from her. . . This guy seems like a real jerk, Poor Taylor. . .

    "I haven't thought about you and I,
There's no you and I, and I know
    Someday you will..."

She is, yet again, stating loud and clear she has gotten the point of all this and moved on. She hasn't been thinking about the two of them and their previous relationship, and she yet again, is telling him straight up, "there's no you and I" by telling him again, We are DONE!She basically... it almost seems as if she just wants him to get it through his mind already, like, give it up dude. You lost this one. Then at the end, before going back to a tailored chorus for him, she is saying that one day, no matter how short or far away, someday he will understand...

    Chorus/Ending:

"Wake up and smell the break up,
Realize that we won't make up,
It didn't go the way you planned."

Here, revising this for him more or like, she is saying, one day, him too will get it through his head it is done, and he will open his eyes and see the break up, and he'll get it through his head that they aren't going to go back to the way they were before, they aren't going to make up, she has had it with his little games. "It didn't go the way you planned." Is an awesome line! :D Meaning, sorry dude, you lost this one. Your little plan didn't work, get over it. Open your eyes: I won.

"And you'll know you didn't beat me
When you look down and see
    I got an "I Heart ?"
Written on the back of my hand!"

She is, again, explaining, how one day it is going to sink into his head. One day he'll get it through his head that he didn't win, she got him before he could win, and she strongly believes that the minute he looks down to her hand and sees the little "I <3 ?" on her hand, it'll all come to him then. Those three little words will snap him back to reality and what has happened is done and over.

"Written on the back of my hand!
    An "I Heart ?", yeah.
Written on the back of my hand..."

Taylor Closes the song, by continuously singing how that "I heart ?"is written there, and it'll be there waiting for that troubled boy to notice it is written there, and it has been written there the whole time, symbolizing the whole time he has been trying to continue on with his plan, she knew it the whole time, and beat her.

Sorry For this being so long... this is how i interpret songs, I must say, this was a pretty hard one. I hope this helped at least one person somewhere in the world :)

    Wish I had concentrated,
    They said love was complicated,
But it's something I just fell into.

People warned her about getting too serious too fast

    And it was overrated,
But just look what I created,
I came out alive, but I'm black and blue.

The relationship was a disaster and she hardly made it through

Before you ask me if I'm alright,
    Think about what I,
    Had to do... yeah,
Wake up and smell the break up,
Fix my heart, put on my make-up,
    Another mess I didn't plan.
And I'll bet you thought you beat me,
    Wish you could only see,
    I got an "I Heart ?"
Written on the back of my hand!

This part is her telling him to really think about all the crap he put her through, and he thinks that she's whipped, but she's saying she's free from him.

I'd be fine if you'd just walked by,
But you had to talk about why
You were wrong and I was right.

He tried to talk to her about it.

But I can't believe you made me,
Sit at home and cry like a baby,
Wait right by the phone every night.

She saying she can't believe how caught up in him she was.

And now you ask about you and I,
    There's no you and I,
Remember what you put me through,
    I had to...

She's saying that they are done in all ways.

And when you're home all alone at night,
    You'll still wonder why
You took everything I had, oh baby.
    I haven't thought about you and I,
There's no you and I, and I know
    Someday you will...
Wake up and smell the break up,
Realize that we won't make up,
It didn't go the way you planned.
And you'll know you didn't beat me
When you look down and see
    I got an "I Heart ?"
Written on the back of my hand!

She's saying he's going to wonder why things went wrong, but it's all his fault, and that it's really over for good.

This is about a boy who thought that he could mess with her heart, just because he 'can', and still get her back, for his own benefit. I guess she saw through what he was doing.

When you love a boy, youd put I <3 (his name) on your hand. By putting "I heart ?" it means that you no longer like him, and your in the process of moving on.

This song is basically saying "I've moved on, if you don't believe me... there is an I♥? written on my hand"

It is about a breakup with a boy you liked, who was playing hard to get. His idea was to break up with you, then try and get back together. You realize what he is up to, so you won't go back to him.

When you are in love with someone, you'd put, "I <3 (his name)". But when she says that she has an "I <3 ?" written on the back of her hand, (not literally) it symbolizes that she has already moved on from him, but isn't exactly sure who she likes.
