The 1975: Girls Meaning
Song Released: 2013
Girls Lyrics
17 and a half years old
I'm worrying about my brother finding out
What’s the fun in doing what you're told?
I said "No!"
'Oh give it a rest, I could persuade you
I'm not your typical, stoned 18 year...

#1 top rated interpretation:he obviously talks about how the girl is too young for him and how at first he wanted a one night stand but he ends up having a relationship. he is implying that girls use their looks to get their way, kind of as a seduction trap. he doesnt want a relationship but she does. he describes her looks and her innocense to emphasize how she uses them to decieve him. however, she's getting herself int a sticky situation without knowing it. he persuades her that thats not what she really wants, she's too young to understand that because even though she appears to be physically mature she's still a girl because her intentions are made using her looks.

#2 top rated interpretation:The song is about how he meets this girl who's younger than him and at first they're just kind of sleeping with each other, but they end up falling in love with each other.
Bite your face to spite your nose
17 and a half years old
(She's younger than him.)
Worrying about my brother finding out
What's the fun in doing what you're told?
(Kinda self explanatory.)
I said, "No!"
(He doesn't want to at first.)
"Oh give it a rest, I could persuade you!
I'm not your typical, stoned 18 year old;
Give me a night I'll make you."
(She's trying to convince him to.)
"I know you're looking for salvation in the secular age, but girl I'm not your savior."
Wrestle to the ground
(He is worried about doing the deed with her and says that she is "looking for salvation in the secular age" but he's not her "savior". So she thinks that sex is love and he tells her otherwise.)
God help me now because
(He ended up loving her.)
They're just girls breaking hearts
Eyes bright, uptight, just girls
But she can't be what you need if she's 17
They're just girls
They're just girls
A pair of frozen hands to hold,
Oh she's so southern so she feels the cold,
(She's from the south, where it's not as cold, but they're in the north, and he's used to the cold, whereas she's not, so he holds her hands. They're being all cute and couple-y.)
One moment I was tearing off your blouse,
Now you're living in my house.
What happened to just messing around?
(At first they were just sleeping around with each other but now they're living with each other.)
I said, "Yo, I think you better go; I can't take you.
You just sit and get stoned with 30 year olds and then you think you've made it."
(She thinks she's hot stuff and hangs out with older people and gets high and he's aggravated with it because that's what he used to do before he fell in love with her.)
"Well, shouldn't you be fucking with somebody your age instead of making changes?"
(They're fighting. Her reply; in other words, "Then you shouldn't have slept with me in the first place. Maybe we should just end it.")
Wrestle to the ground
God help me now because
They're just girls breaking hearts
Eyes bright, uptight, just girls
But she can't be what you need if she's 17
They're just girls
They're just girls
I told her from the start
Destined to be hard
I told her from the start
I'll break your heart
Destined to be hard
I'll break your heart
(He told her that if they started sleeping with each other it would be hard and they would only end up hurt in the end.)
I said, "Yo, I think you better go; I can't take you.
I know you're looking for salvation in the secular age,
But girl I'm not your savior."
"Well, shouldn't you be fucking with somebody your age instead of making changes?"
Wrestle to the ground
God help me now because
They're just girls breaking hearts
Eyes bright, uptight, just girls
But she can't be what you need if she's 17
They're just girls
They're just girls
They're just girls breaking hearts
Eyes bright, uptight, just girls
But she can't be what you need if she's 17
They're just girls
They're just girls
Cause they're just girls...
Just girls, they're just girls... -
The song is really about them answering back to each other. You can tell it. He says no.she tries to persuade him...listen and your get it
-
The "worrying about my brother finding out" line is because this girl he is 'dating' is literally closer to his little brother's age than his/
-
Bite your face to spite your nose (foreshadowing you do something when you know you shouldn't and it has consequences)
17 and a half years old (he's older)
Worrying about my brother finding out (she's dating the younger brother)
What's the fun in doing what you're told? ( he's convincing Her ,foreshadowing)
I said, "No!" (At first she turned him down)
"Oh give it a rest, I could persuade you"
"I'm not your typical, stoned 18 year old
Give me a night I'll make you" (he's telling her if she gives him one night she won't regret it)
"I know you're looking for salvation in the secular age, but girl I'm not your savior." (He's also reminding her he's no going to be her prince charming he'll be a one night stand)
Wrestle to the ground
God help me now because ( he know he's getting into something)
They're just girls breaking hearts.
Eyes bright, uptight, just girls (they don't fully understand they're breaking hearts, because they are still just "girls" even though they are physically almost adults)
But she can't be what you need if she's 17 (she's to young to be what he needs which is a woman, someone who understands how the world is and what people are going to be like. Not a doe eyed innocent girl.)
They're just girls
They're just girls
A pair of frozen hands to hold,
Oh she's so southern so she feels the cold, (she's from the south or she's just really cold)
One moment I was tearing off your blouse,
Now you're living in my house.
What happened to just messing around? ( their not just sleeping together she's moved in, and he's like what the heck happened)
I said, "Yo, I think you better go; I can't take you."
"You just sit and get stoned with 30 year olds and you think you've made it."(she's started to go wrong from hanging around him, and all his stoner friends. He's upset cuz he's started the to fall for her and is not such a stoner anymore. He's ge better whereas she's going down the wrong path)
"Well, shouldn't you be fucking with somebody your age instead of making changes?" (She's saying shouldn't he be messing with people his own age, and not changing for her like he said)
Wrestle to the ground
God help me now because
They're just girls breaking hearts
Eyes bright, uptight, just girls
But she can't be what you need if she's 17
They're just girls
They're just girls
I told her from the start
Destined to be hard
I told her from the start
I'll break your heart
Destined to be hard
I'll break your heart (in the end they were both bad for each other he changed her for the worse and she broke his heart... even though he didn't say it it sounds kind of bitter)
I said, "Yo, I think you better go; I can't take you."
"I know you're looking for salvation in the secular age, but girl I'm not your savior."
"Well, shouldn't you be fucking with somebody your age instead of making changes?"
Wrestle to the ground
God help me now because
They're just girls breaking hearts
Eyes bright, uptight, just girls
But she can't be what you need if she's 17
They're just girls
They're just girls
They're just girls breaking hearts
Eyes bright, uptight, just girls
But she can't be what you need if she's 17
They're just girls
They're just girls
'Cause they're just girls...
Just girls, they're just girls...
( I think the message of this song is honestly really good. To me it's saying a lot of people don't understand what they're getting into when they start a no strings attached relationship. Both sides can get hurt. Also don't mess with girls hearts, they might look grown and are almost or they are. However they are still young or innocent or naive at heart (sometimes).) and this is just my opinion
