I believe that this song is about the contradicting paradox of love and hate. How the struggle between love and hate plays out. It's not necessarily about a couple but any situation where there is one opposing side-being hatred and the other side trying to help the opposing-love.
Also I think it could be a two people who are complete opposites and one of them works really hard to keep them together.
