The Avett Brothers: I and Love and You Meaning
I and Love and You Lyrics
Grab your bag and grab your coat
Tell the ones that need to know
We are headed north
One foot in and one foot back
But it don't pay, to live like that
So i cut the ties and i jumped the tracks
For never to...
-
In my opinion I think the song is mainly about taking a risk and being independent but there is a line that I think brings it all in for me and that's remembering how you were brought up by your parents and realizing that no matter how different you are you will usually reflect what your family environment was like. Probably way off.....but that's what art is all about huh?

So they literally lived in Brooklyn?
-
The previous response to mine is partially true with the "leaving home" idea. But a majority of the claims aren't remotely true, such as the Statue of Liberty comparison. All things aside, read the title. "I and Love and You" in ors essence it's about love and escaping pain.

This is a song about growing up and leaving home.
"One foot in and one foot back
But it don't pay, to live like that
So i cut the ties and i jumped the tracks
For never to return" - Here they talk about being stuck between childhood and adulthood, and subsequently taking the final step forward.
"When at first I learned to speak
I used all my words to fight
With him and her and you and me
Oh but its just a waste of time
Yeah its such a waste of time" - Here they talk about the friction that they had with their parents, and need to end that dynamic.
"That woman shes got eyes that shine
Like a pair of stolen polished dimes
She asked to dance I said it's fine
I'll see you in the morning time" - The woman seems to be New York, or the Statue of Liberty. The 'dancing' is getting to know the city, which they plan on staying in.
"Three words that became hard to say
I and love and you
What you were then, I am today
Look at the things I do" - Again, talking about the strain in the relationship with their parents. Also pointing out that they are similar people.
"Dumbed down and numbed by time and age
Your dreams to catch the world, the cage
The highway sets the travelers stage
All exits look the same" - This seems to say that though their parents used to be like them, they've changed, and tried to force their own dreams onto their children. As the children begin their journey into adulthood, they aren't sure where it will take them.
