The Killers: Andy, You're A Star Meaning
Andy, You're A Star Lyrics
Hey shut up, hey shut up, yeah
On the field I remember you were incredible
Hey shut up, hey shut up, yeah
On the mats with the boys, you think you're all alone
With the pain that you drain from...
-
well, I remember reading a bunch of articles after the album came out and Brandon Flowers admitted that in High School he had a crush on a star athlete. *This does not mean he is gay!!* He just had a crush. So this song is definitely about a boy's crush on the popular athlete.
-
I think that andy is a very close friend who is a sports star but is getting caught up in the wrong crowd, maybe dating a girl who is not good for him and its ruining the relationship brandon flowers has with andy
-
Steering away from Flower's sexuality, this song seems at first sarcastic and highly caustic. The speaker is clear that he does not think Andy is a star, and is rather
The lines
On the field I remember you were incredible
Hey shut up, hey shut up, yeah
imply both animosity and envy. Andy is clearly involved in some kind of sport, most likely football. More key are the words "Hey shut up", which many chalk up to rejection. If we continue reading, we shall explore how these contrast with the rest of the song.
On the match with the boys, you think you're all alone
With the pain that you drain from love
In a car with a girl, promise me she's not your world
Cause Andy, you're a star
The animosity grows to a fever pitch in this stanza. The lines practically drip with venom, accusing Andy of being both self-centered and sadistic. These are not the words of a spurned lover, but rather the words of a furious man. He continues that he wants nothing more than separation between Andy and this mystery girl in the car. Perhaps it is the object of his affection, perhaps the speaker here simply loathes Andy and everything he stands for. This remains a mystery.
Leave your number on the locker and I'll give you a call
Hey shut up, hey shut up, yeah
Leave your legacy in gold on the plaques that line the hall
Hey shut up, hey shut up, yeah
"Hey shut up" appears again, but this is mixed with "leave your number on the locker and I'll give you a call". This could be a quote or a recited response. The third line, however, brings us back to the theme of hatred, with a chiding comment about how Andy's achievements are limited to the first eighteen years of his life. Nobody will remember him besides those who pass the plaques upon the walls of his school.
Finally, we reach a downright baffling change in the direction of the song. The final few lines shift all the stardom into the speaker's view alone.
Cause Andy, you're a star
In nobody's eyes but mine
Andy, you're a star
In nobody's eyes but mine
The fury that had been built so carefully throughout the song takes on an entirely different meaning. All pretense of sarcasm is dropped, and the speaker candidly admits that he wants what Andy has. Nobody, he reasons, could possibly think higher of Andy. Andy is his hero, a man who has accomplished the speaker's every dream at the speaker's expense. It is possible that this is Flowers himself speaking to a figure in his past. While Flowers is making millions and is celebrated by hundreds of thousands, he still envies a high school footballer who won everything he wanted in the past. -
I'm pretty sure that it's not about homosexuality, Brandon is a morman, and is "very important to him"
also "on the field you were incredible" could mean playing the field as in Andy dates a lot of girls, and the "in the car with a girl, promise me she's not your world" could be because he knows Andy dates a lot of girls. The character in the story is in awe but yet repulsed by his behavior. which is why Andy is a star. The "hey shut up" part could mean that Andy wants to keep his womanizing ways a secret.
"Leave your legacy in gold on the plaques that line the hall" Could be all the high school girls he's done whatever with.
I just really dont think this is about homosexuality.
-
to say the least, i think it's about a boy who likes another boy.
But Brandon also wrote jenny was a friend of mine and nobody's accusing him of murder so what's the difference? the song is work of fiction. -
Okay, maybe I'm the only one that got this impression but here's what I think:
Andy is actually a girl (yes I know some girls named andy), who is a bit of a tomboy. Her refusal to conform to the standard girly nature has made her a bit exiled, but she is very good at sports, even when playing with boys "On the mats with the boys you think you're alone". Its uncool to even talk to Andy, which explains the person doing the talking to say "hey shut up" quite a few times. The person doing all the talking also happens to like Andy "Andy, you're a star, in nobody's eyes but mine." And tries to be fairly discreet in trying to get her phone number.
That's just my idea of what the song means =-) -
Look, I understand that most people want to compare this song to what Brandon Flowers hints in interviews. However, i just want to give my interpretation for what I believe the message of the song says to me.
I believe the song is Brandon's attempt to try to write in the perspective of one of his female friends from high school. She is just like every other girl: she swoons over the star football player. She knows that he has this special girl in his life, but she (of course) has the desire to be with him. We know he must be a great football (or any other sport) star from the plaques on the wall. She doesn't want to hear all the other girls falling for him as well because he is her "star" and "in nobody's eyes but [hers]"
Although she admires his greatness, but she wants to know his number and just meet him. She wants him to leave all his greatness on the walls and just be himself. She probably is also annoyed by how he believes to be the only sport star in the whole school. She just wants him to be famous in her life and no one else's. Special only in her eyes. Too bad she will never experience this after all the fame he has received. She also feels bad because he is a great star in her life, but she has done nothing. She is just her.

Where on earth do you get the idea that the Killers are from the UK? Gees, it's a common fact they are from the US. There are no accents people!

Jesus, guys, read the freaking comments before restating what's already been said.
I'll briefly sum them up for you.
1) Brandon's married to a woman.
2) He admitted in an interview that the song is about his high school crush on a guy. He [Brandon] was questioning his sexuality. Bradon assures his audiences that he is straight.
3) The crush's name is Andy Messersmith.
That is all. -
Someone loves a boy called Andy who's a sports star. She stalks him but he's not interested in her and has another girlfriend.
'In a car with a girl, promise me she's not your world
Cause Andy, you're a star'
She tries to convince him only she thinks he's special and everyone else is really against him.
This is my interpretation, it could just be generalised to stalking someone and the sotry about Andy just represents this. -
I agree that his song is about the football player or w/e, but one thing I'd like to say is... BRANDON IS NOT GAY! He is married and has kids and stuff! Gosh, ever think that Andy could have been a good friend? Or maybe something like that?
-
Brandon Flowers is definitely not gay he is married to Tana Mundowsky and now has a son named Aamon flowers, how can you even consider Brandon to be gay. He is straight and The Killers are American.
-
Ok, here's what I think. The singer has a major crush on the football star of his high school (even stalking him), but Andy is in denial about being gay. The song is about him tell him how much he loves him and that he wants him to come out.
-
1) How did an interpretation of a song to rather or not Braden Flowers is gay
2) Andy could possibly be a girl. (The song is not nessisarily about a football star)
3) What makes you think Branden wrote the song. It could have easily been written by Ronnie, Dave, Mark or even some writer.
4) Branden is married
5) Who cares if he is gay
