The Rolling Stones: Paint It Black Meaning
Song Released: 1966
Paint It Black Lyrics
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
I see a line of cars and theyre all painted...

I know this is a different interpretation...but I always kinda thought about this song to be about a serial killer..i guess i think that "i see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes i have to turn away until my darkness goes" possibly being the killer resisting the urge to kill someone...or "i look inside myself and see my heart is black" meaning he knows that he is a sick person who kills people. " i see people turn their heads then quickly look away" meaning people don't look him in the eye because hes a killer. Basically its a very sinister sounding song to me..it has something to do with depression or some kind of sickness...but the whole killer thing just kinda stuck in my head since i've been a kid.
-
The most sinister song ever written. Exponentially so when considering that this was a Rolling Stones song. Amazing tune.
-
Honestly don't read that much into it. I agree with the first interpretations and that he lost a love and is depressed and such. Not the whole Jesus line of thought. Although death can be spiritual this is about the dark side of a mans feelings not about him seeing Jesus or something... Why do people always go there?

The underlying meaning behind "Paint it Black"
has to do with the line "I wanna see your face painted black, black as night, black as coal; don't want to see the the sun flyin high in the sky" (partially omittted
in the lyrics provided by this website)
The face referred to here is Christ's face.
Christ is referred to as the sun flyin high in the sky.
But there is a contradiction and conflict with this
statement of wanting to Paint it black, paint Christ's face
black, obscure or blot it out and the line
"If I look hard enough into the settin sun; my love will laugh with me before the morning comes" which speaks
of looking for Christ.
Sarcasm and metaphor are encountered again and again in lyrics in
general and this song is no exception.
I'll say more about this song "Paint it Black"
so stay tuned... -
"if I look hard enough into the setting sun
my love will laugh with me before the morning comes"
This part of the song, I believe, calls attention to the concept of Mathew 24:42 "Watch therefore; for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come."
Here, "my love" from the line I am interpreting, is a reference to Jesus.
I could say more about this song but will add to to my interpretation in the future...if anyone wants to hear more you can reach me directly at 201-264-6194.
Just wondering if you can make comments about others' interpretations on this site. -
I SOOO have to go with the last guy- I always thought (despite what my friends said) that this part of the song about the summer clothes had sexual undertones. He feels sad and guilty that he is naturally attracted to other women. Thanks, someone finally got it!
-
OH! I thought that "look hard enough into the setting sun" was "look hard enough into the second song"
-
... He likes black.
