The Used - Hard to Say Meaning
Hard to Say Lyrics
The singer sheds a tear, her fear of falling out
And it's hard to say how I feel today
For years gone by and I cried
It's hard to say that I was wrong
It's hard to say I miss you
Since...

In case you haven't seen it there was a recent interview with Bert talking about this song(There is a "you rock" interview for suicide prevention and mental health awareness). The song before his girlfriend Kate died was just a very basic guitar idea. He does admit that she overdosed but never mentions anything about her being pregnant.Upon the arrival of the news of her death Bert was in a very suicidal and mentally numb state. John Feldman(their producer and close friend, also in the band Goldfinger)sent a friend to get Bert from his apartment. When Bert arrived in the studio John did not mention Kate. John just said to write a song that described how he felt. Bert describes recording the lyrics as very therapeutic. This helped him to move on from denial and anger to actually sadness. This song is obviously very special in the heart of Bert and everyone who is a fan of The Used.

He wrote it before she died. So theres another meaning behind it.

As The Used fans we know why he wrote the song. But this site is for our interpretation of the song, not the reason. That said, here is my interpretation.
The singer tries to live on with his life even after a tragedy of his loved one. He may have been a dick to her, lied to her,but she never did know the real him. He cried over her, mourned her loss and misses her still. She never got tosee the compassionate side of him before her passing, and he never got to tell her how much he loved her. -
regardless, of what bert wrote the song about.
which, it was written for his girlfriend who died.
as actually, many of their songs are.
i think, that "song interpretation" is more for what YOU get out of the song. and not the artist's reasoing behind the lyrics.
personally, this reminds me of my ex boyfriend. "it's hard to say that i was wrong, it's hard to say i miss you, since you've been gone it's not the same." because, he recently moved to pennsylvania, from NC, and that's just how i feel about him.
but really, she did die in a car accident, from a drug overdose, it's one of the saddest stories i've ever heard, but it created some amazing lyrics, from my favorite band. -
This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

A lot of you don't know much about the Used, apparently. I've been obsessed with them for about 3 to 4 years and reading up on them since forever.
She DID in fact, die of a drug overdose, but it was an accident, a car accident.
she was pregnant with Bert's baby and had an overdose and was driving at the same time, car crashed. She died.
It's sad. -
This song is about Bert's ex-girlfriend who killed herself while carrying Bert's child.
-
The song is about Bert's ex-girlfrind who died. He's saying that she was wrong about him and he's sorry and it's never to late, even though you're gone.
I love you and could never forget you. I would also like to say that no matter how much I ever told myself that I wasn't writing songs about you ALL THE TIME. I really was and will miss you forever.
IN LOVING MEMORY
KATE 1981-2004 -
This song is about Bert's ex-girlfriend, Kate. She apparently died of a drug overdose, and she was carrying his child. He wrote it for her. Sad, I know.
