Quit frankly, this song is about Kate. She wasn't listening to him when she o.d.ed. When he says, "I don't see anything now, so just say what you want to say. It's kinda funny how I'm not listening anyway."
It's talking in her point of veiw (Kate).
"lights out" That's the meds absorbing the life out of her. "while we were making love I was fast asleep." That goes back to where Bert, and Kate, were both addicted to drugs. Their minds go to sleep due to the drugs.
Then, at the end of the song, it finally says, "I'm listening......." In a faint and empty tone, then implying that after she o.d.ed, she was thinking as her life was disinegrating into the memories of (obviously) Bert.
Then, you hear, "I'M NOT LISTENING!" Notice how Bert is screaming in frustration and disbelief...
That's just because he doesn't want to "hear" that his ex-love (Kate) and (THEIR) baby, had died.
If you think this about anything other wise, you must not FEEL what Bert says. Because I feel this song specifically, is mis-understood. -
I think he was talking bout an ex and how he's not going to change how he is just for them so they can go die because he's content with him self

This song is about a lot of different things all into one song. The lead singer was going through quite a time with the death of Kate at the time, and he expressed a lot of his feelings through this CD.

My guess this is a song about euthanasia which is ending someones life to stop their suffering. Example - "If it's still light out then a kick in the ribs, a days worth living..." Saying if u can live another day you should live it out. I also think that it is about how the people ending their lives aren't listening to what THEY want done. Example - I don't see anything now so just say what you want to say. It's kinda funny how, I'm not listening anyway..." But yah thats my geuss...
