Twenty One Pilots: Addict With a Pen Meaning
Addict With a Pen Lyrics
We haven't talked in quite some time
I know
I haven't been the best
Of sons
Hello
I've been traveling in
The desert of my mind
And I
Haven't found a drop
Of life
I haven't found a drop
Of you
I haven't found a drop
I haven't...

#1 top rated interpretation:Hello
We haven't talked in quite some time
I know, I haven't been the best of sons
(A man is praying and is admitting his wrong doings and asking for forgiveness)
Hello
I've been traveling in the deserts of my mind
(He has been thinking alot and has been trying to find hope)
And I, haven't found a drop
Of life
(His mind is full of death)
I haven't found a drop
Of you
(He is starting to lose his faith)
I haven't found a drop
I haven't found a drop
Of water
(He can't find hope)
Water
I tried desperately to run through the sand as I hold the water in the palm of my hand
But it's all that I have and it's all that I need and the waves of the water mean nothing to me
But I tried my best and all that I can to
Hold tightly onto what's left in my hand
But no matter how
How tightly I will strain
The sand will slow me down
And the water will drain
(He found hope and is trying to us it but the hope only last so long and there are challenges that slow him down and drain hope)
I'm just being dramatic
In fact, I'm only at it again
As an addict with a pen
(He is writing this song in a very depressed state)
Who's addicted to the wind
As it blows me back and forth
Mindless, spineless and pretend
Of course I'll see you again
See you Tomorrow but it's the end of today
End of my ways
(He is contimplating suicide)
As a walking denial
(He denies he has a problem)
My trial was filed as a
Crazy, suicidal headcase
(He tried to get help, but they treated him like he was crazy)
But you specialize in dying
You hear me screaming father
And I'm lying here just crying
So wash me with you water
(He turned to his faith to try and find hope)

#2 top rated interpretation:I think that "water" could be an interpretation of sanity. With that being said, I think he means he only has little sanity left, or that no matter how hard he tries to regain it, he can't get back his sanity. When Tyler says, "The waves of the water mean nothing to me but I try my best and all that I can to hold tightly onto what's left in my hand" I think he means that the rest of his thoughts and/or actions don't matter to him, as long as he keeps what's left of his sanity. "The sand will slow me down" could mean that Tyler's depression and anxiety could destroy the small bit of sanity left. When he calls himself an addict with a pen, I think he means exactly what he says, as writing down songs is his method of getting out his feelings.

#3 top rated interpretation:This song pertains to the dismal feeling of a void. No matter how hard you attempt to find peace or a joyous resolvment, you feel empty inside. It's about trying to find some hope to cling to in times of anguish. You've simply preservered through so much sorrow and you contemplate whether life is worth living at all. When you finally reach out to someone about the predicaments you endure, they regard you as if your words consist of lunacy and fallacies. Life becomes monotonous and every facet is melancholic. Ultimately, the affliction culminates into suicide.

This is most definitely a religious song!! Hes losing hope, hes tried to get help and now hes turned to god to save him.
-
I believe that when he says "I'm only back at it again as an addict with a pen" It could mean that he has lost so much of his sanity and happiness he no longer knows why he harms himself but continues to do it because its what he think he is meant to do

It's about God, or more precisely, his relationship with God. Hear me out on this, but I happen to know the writer is a Christian. With that knowledge, the song becomes clear. The "desert of my mind" is simply his mind, without the "water" of God, we are lost in our minds, and they are hopeless like a desert. The wind he's addicted to is his desires that blow him around and off course, the evil inside if you will. "I'll be here again, see you tomorrow" (He keeps going back to the same lusts that toss him around.)"It's the end of my days, end of my ways as a walking denial" (When someone accepts Christ's message, their life changes.) "My trial was filed as a crazy
Suicidal head case
But you specialize in dying"
(He recognizes that he falls short of God's standard, but despite his shortcomings, Jesus died for him. )
"And I'm lying here just crying
So wash me with your water"
(He's asking god to save him again)
If my interpretation doesn't fit for you, then ignore it. It's music after all, and is best when interpreted personally. I am quite certain however, that my interpretation comes close to capturing the intentions of the writer. -
This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

Hello
We haven't talked in quite some time

I haven't been the best
Of sons
(A man trying to reach to god after maybe ignoring his faith, but needing it when depression surfaces)
Hello
I've been traveling in
The desert of my mind
And I
Haven't found a drop
Of life
I haven't found a drop
Of you
I haven't found a drop
I haven't found a drop

(He I said trying to find his faith but, realizes its infested with depression)
Water
I try desperately to run through the sand
As I hold the water
In the palm of my hand
Cause it's all that I have
And it's all that I need and
The waves of the water
Mean nothing to me
(He is able to crawl back into his faith)
But I try my best
And all that I can to
Hold tightly onto
What's left in my hand
But no matter how
How tightly I will strain
The sand will slow me down
And the water will drain
(No matter how hard he tries, he can't have his faith)
I'm just being dramatic
In fact,
I'm only at it again
As an addict with a pen
(He's being dramatic thinking he doesn't need his faith and writing maybe a suicide note?
Who's addicted to the wind
As it blows me back and forth
Mindless, spineless, and pretend
Of course I'll be here again
See you tomorrow
(He will be back in the same depressive state)
But it's the end of today
End of my ways
(He's ready to take his life)
As a walking denial
My trial was filed as a crazy
Suicidal head case
(He is insane)
But you specialize in dying
You hear me screaming, "Father,"
And I'm lying here just crying
So wash me with your water
(He's asking god to save him one last time)
