I think that the messiah is himself tired of people which are becomes all the same way, the desert calling means to stay far alone from this kind of people and now he is empty because nibidy us around him but he didn't lost his motivation to live (hunger of a lion). At the end for me all this means that he become kind evil, tired of people and feel to stay alone
