AFI: Love Like Winter Meaning
Song Released: 2006
Love Like Winter Lyrics
Here it's December,
Everyday. [small girlish echo:] I like that
Press your lips to the sculptures,
And surely you'll stay. [distant:] love like winter
For of sugar and ice,
I am made. I am made
It's in...
-
well at least we all agree love is part of it,
i think its about love being cold but beautiful, hence the title, Love Like Winter. -
its basically about truly finding your true love and staying with them forever, and dying with them in the end to continue on into the afterlife.
-
The thing about AFI is that they don't want you to know the interpretation, it's to you to decide. I'll share what I believe the song is about.
Warn your warmth to turn away,
Here it's December,
Everyday. [small girlish echo:] I like that
Press your lips to the sculptures,
And surely you'll stay. [distant:] love like winter
For of sugar and ice,
I am made. I am made
Warm your warmth to turn away means that love is harsh so you should close yourself off to it so you don't turn out like him. Here it's december everyday means that it's always going to be cold and harsh. Press your lips to the sculptures and surely you'll stay simply means that if you live on the good times, the past, now gone and "Frozen" Into sculptures, you won't want to give up on love. For of sugar and Ice I am made means that he's still open and kind when it comes to love, though frozen and cold due to past love.
It's in the blood,
It's in the blood.
I met my love before I was born.
He (she) wanted love,
I taste of blood.
He (she) bit my lip, and drank my warmth,
From years before, from years before.
It's in the blood and I met my love before I was born mean that it was destiny for them, him and a past lover, to be together. There was never any question about it. She wanted love, I taste of blood; she wanted him to love her but he couldn't due to unhealed past wounds. She bit my lip and drank my war from years before means that she helped him through what he had gone through and she helped him to heal. Note that the writers of this song had said that she stands for hope, so perhaps his hope of finding true love helped him through it.
She exhales vanilla lace,
I barely dreamt her, yesterday. [echo:] yesterday
With the lines in the mirror through,
The lipstick trace.
Por siempre
She said "It seems you're somewhere, far away" to his face.
She exhales Vanilla lace, I barely dreampt her yesterday; she's healing his wounds even though he only just succumbed to hope. With (read?) The lines in the mirror through the lipstick trace. Por Siempre. She left him a message in lipstick on a mirror; por siempre means forever. The hope that they'll find each other one day is enough to drag him on.
The basic point of the song (I half used the video as well) Is that even in the worst times of love, when two lovers are seperated or one leaves this world, the hope of seeing them again is enough to drag you on
-Hikari Out. -
People? The lyrics are wrong. It's "He bit my lip and drank my WARMTH", not WAR.
That said, most of the interpretations are very close to what I found in this song, except for that bit. I especially like the vampire take - that's what it sounded like to me too. I haven't known about this band for long, so I don't know if it would be in character for them to do a vampire song.
Also keep in mind that blood gives a vampire strength, so the vampire element may be there, but as a metaphor for shared strenght.
I have a much longer interpretation, but I wanted to point out the lyrical error without distracting people. -
(Warn your warmth to turn away...Here it's December everyday)-This line I think is actually saying that you need to leave. Its December here, or in other words, in this area, within this feeling it's hopeless.
(Brush your lips to the sculptures and surely you'll stay)- I think in this he's saying that even though he warned you to turn away before he really does want you to stay with him.
(For of Sugar and ice...I am made...I am made)- In this he's saying with me you'll have sweet times, but I can be cold too.
(It's in the blood...It's in the blood...I met my love before I was born)- With this I think he's saying that before we were born, or before we became flesh and blood at all we met our love and so did he.
(He wanted love...I taste of blood...He bit my lip and drank my war from years before...from years before)- In this he's saying that he tastes of blood, or war, some sort of fighting. This person, the one who wants his love, kissed him basically and in the singers mind that kiss took all the years of war, all the years of bloodshed and fighting, and all bad things, away.
(She exhales vanilla lace...I barely dreamt her yesterday)-This girl that he sees sitting there in the cold alone-vanilla lace=cold breath by the way-was like a dream to him.
(with the lines in the mirror through the lipstick trace..."Por Siempre")- Por Siempre means forever in spanish. I think he's trying to share with us a loss he had. I suppose he lost this girl and he was trying to come up with a different meaning for the words written on the mirror...and he's remembering how they said they'd be together...forever.
(She said, "It seems you're somewhere faraway." to his face)- I think her saying that was her explanation for why she left him. To her he probably seemed like he was starting to care less and less. They were drifting apart in her eyes.
(It's in the blood...It's in the blood...I met my love before I was born...she wanted love...I taste of blood...She bit my lip and drank my war from years before...from years before)- same meaning as before, just with a different person this time.
(Love like winter...Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh...Love like winter...winter...3, 4)- He's saying love is like winter, cold and harsh, but its something you need to go through, but he's also saying that love is pure and cleansing.
(It's in the blood...It's in the blood...I met my love before I was born...He wanted love...I taste of blood...He bit my lip and drank my war from years before...From years before)-This is where we come full circle with his relationships and he remembers his first "love" again. -
great song and it can be interpreted many ways. this song is about...
VAMPIRES!!! just kidding lol
As many people have said i think it's about love that's cold and bitter, and how people turn away from you and leave you cold and empty. That's not neccesarily what the song means though, as i said it could be interpreted different ways.

I think this song is about being a vampire, not becoming a vampire. It makes sense all the lyrics pertaining to cold i.e. "Love like winter" "December everyday" that it is about being cold, cold-hearted, lacking emotion. The lyrics "It's in the blood, I met my love before I was born." He was born a vampire and therefore cannot control his natural need for "sustenance". Then the lines "He bit my lip and drank my war from years before..." Maybe he is referring to someone who he is converting, and now they have the hunger, or war, too. Same goes for the second verse with the woman. Now the part "she exhales vanilla lace" seems almost as though she is exhaling snowflakes. They are white and drawings typically depict a lace pattern. So, it must be someplace cold, which also corresponds with the beginning of being december everyday. "She says it seems you're somewhere, far away, to his face", could possibly be because he has the "hunger" and appears as though he is not really seeing her as a person, like distant. "Love like winter" could be the feeling of love that he feels, because when he gets close to someone, he cannot help because his instincts as a vampire are different than ours as humans.
-
I think it's about love / it could be about love in the winter his romance
-
I think the one line that was left out in all of your interpretations was "I barely drempt her yesterday" and I think what that means is that he didn't know what he had with her until he lost it.
-
This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

Great Song. I think a lot of these posts have the idea (minus the Beatles freak)...This person is scarred about a past love and someone new has come along that wants love from him- "press your lips to the sculpture and surely you'll stay" -he knows once she kisses him she'll want him, "For of sugar and ice I am made" - he seems sweet yet cold from his past - "He wanted love, I taste of blood, I met my love before I was born" - That person wants love from him, however all he feels is the blood (bitterness) from yesterday (...he drank my war from years before) from that person that scarred him (again, I met my love b4 I was born=soulmate=he feels he has already met her and is scorned by her, hence the winter and cold comments throughout the song)...Finally for all the Poor Siempre part and mirror stuff...i think this new chick realized he would never love her, that he was somewhere else all along and leaves him.

Ok I wanna start off by saying that the person who said Por Siempre means I love the Beatles is a crock of shit. Have you taken Spanish class before? ok just checking. Por Siempre means Forever, or Always Forever, or anything that deals with "always" and "forever" and I kind of agree with some people saying it's about the shitty side of love.
in my opinion I think it's about his loves in the past that have said I will love you "always" and "forever" but she can't really deal with the job he has. He's never there like they use to be. and you know the kind of job that keeps you away from your family and loved ones. like the military, or being on tour with the band.
that's my interpertation on this song. -
It may sound weird but I think it's about becoming a vampire.
I think he knew the vampire that bit him and the concept of being born again translates into becoming a vampire.
I think the part about he wanted love I taste of blood, is the vampire seducing him, in an attempt to drink his blood, or for companionship.
The bit my lip and drank my war part, when the vampire bit him, he took in his memories good and bad from years before
Love like winter+into the blood=Ice cold, cold blooded (lol sorry I couldn't resist) -
AFI's song have many meanings. one meaning for love like winter is it is about being bi-sexual and people not accepting you for that reason another meaning is the warmth of love disappearing and it becoming cold and harsh.
-
He also says "por siempre" (spanish for "I love the Beatles")
What the HELL?!?! por siempre is spanish for "For ever more" we'ere not ALL retards... I hope.
