Angels & Airwaves: Surrender Meaning
Song Released: 2011
Surrender Lyrics
That fooled themselves
They brought their friends and they made their hell
They fake their grin in a lonely cell
To the bitter end, but what do I know?
There are a few in here that hurt themselves
They kick and...

The whole song focuses deeply on the typical life of a teenager or young boys and girls and then eventually leading to an adult, in this case Tom, and how he understands it now for the part where he says'this time I feel it now'. It shows how people, who are not in the same position, in fact hold them back.I think that the saying'when God falls fast asleep' gives people, especially teenagers, the motivation that they need to do something in life. I dont think it necessarily means that they dont need a leader but that the leader gives them the choice to do what they wish and the strength to do exactly that by putting it in their hands. Overall, I think this song is a very influential and motivating piece of advice/speech including a personal story.

I have two ideas of what this song could mean. First, "When God falls fast asleep, the kids still dance in city streets" means that the new generation of teenagers don't need a leader to be successful. It is trying to say that kids can create their own future but parents, teachers and other adult figures are creating it for them. Also, the line "And all around I'm just saying that this time I feel it now" would mean that he has high hopes for this coming generation and letting them have more freedom of choice. Basically I think its mostly just trying to say how teenagers should be able to choose what they want to do with their life instead of their parents always telling them what to do or who to be. They’re people too and they should be able to be who they want to be. What its trying to say is all the teenagers struggling with what their parents or people who are trying to command you when you’re perfectly capable of being who they are. Don’t let anyone create or change who you are. Don’t give up.. (or surrender as the song says)
Second idea is that kids will never give up even when the one thing that protects them is gone and that no matter the pain or how dangerous the situation is, they never surrender to it, they keep doing what makes them happy, also in the movie, the fact that Lee never gives up and never surrenders to death but keeps going and clings on to the one chance that he will be saved, maybe waiting for something to find him… *from the movie Love(angles and airwaves)* so don’t give up.. never surrender. -
