Hate Me Lyrics

(If you're sleeping are you dreaming
If your dreaming are you dreaming of me?
I can't believe you actually picked me.)

(”Hi Justin, this is your mother, and it's 2:33 on Monday afternoon.
I was just calling to see how you were doing.
You...

I think he's tired of everything that's going on in his life. The voice at the beginning sounds like his mother and he talks about how much worries he has caused her and he wants to leave her so there would be no more worries. I think he committed suicide because at the end of the song you can hear what sounds like "that's my son" with his mother screaming it like she was looking at him dead on the ground.

This song is very sad and I think it is about his mother.

The opening of the song is of a message recording of his mother. She seems to care for him and he didn't seem to care as much for her as he should have. I think she died and he is dedicating this to her. I think he drank a lot of alcohol and she tried to get him to stop but he didn't. Then when she died, he realized what he did and how he never cared and how he made her feel and he quit drinking. If you watch the music video, you see him holding a message machine and going through his life. He starts to walk around the house still holding the message machine. The first room is of him being held in his mother's arms as an infant. Then the next room his mother is bathing him at about age 3-4. The next room is his mother shaking her finger at him when he is about...8-9. As he walks down the stairs you see his mother leaning over his body on the floor and crying. She lifts his head up and his eyes are open. Then in the next scene he is posing with a woman and his mother is smiling and picking up a camera...maybe prom? Then you see him walking out of the house still holding the message machine. You see him riding in a car holding the message machine on his lap. If you look out the windows you see graves so he is in a cemetery. You see him walk to a grave and look down. The you see him walking away and the car leaving. The camera moves down to the grave and the message machine is on the grave. Then the ground changes and the machine is back on a table. The camera moves up and you see him and his mother drinking lemonade and smiling.

So I think it was about what would have happened if he hadn't changed his way of life, drinking/partying. Instead he did change and when he did he became closer to his mother.

If you put the song and the video together and try and see how they relate I think you get more of a sense of what the song is really about. I don't think its another song about a relationship. It starts off with a message from his mom worried about him. Then the beginning is him basically saying you need to leave me alone, stop saying you love me after all I did to you. He's saying hate me so you can finally stop caring about me after all that I put you through. and he says he's sober so he went through an addiction, I'm guessing alchohol because he talks of raging wars on himself and her holding his head up late at night like when he's puking and how she just tried to stop him from hurting himself that way. He obviously had some suicidal thoughts and she tried to make him compliment himself and feel good about himself, but he just couldnt let go of all the mistakes he made. and when he says hell drive so fucking far away that hell never cross her mind I don't think he literally means drive away I think he means suicide. Hate me in ways hard to swallow is basically saying no matter how hard its going to be for her to hate she needs to hate him in order to help herself and not let him hold her down. and then I think he commits suicide because he can't let go of all the mistakes he's made and he constantly won't let himself live down the mistakes, like when he says kicking shadows on the street for every mistake that I have made, he's beating himself up because he feels bad for what he put his mom and other loved ones through. Then he says like a baby boy he never was a man till he saw her blue eyes cry and held her face in his head. I think that means that until he committed suicide and as he was dying saw her face and her blue eyes crying he never really grew up. at that point he realized what his suicide and mistakes have done to her. I think by seeing that his suicide caused her more pain he regretted doing it. and then she says how could you do this to me. and realize that no matter what mistakes he made she always cared for him and unconditionally loved him, but now that he's commiting suicide its the only time she saying how could you do this to me. She doesn't hold his mistakes against him or blame him for any of it, but she wouldnt be able to handle him killing himself. The whole song he's saying her life is miserable because of the mistakes he has made but by committing suicide its only hurting her more than he ever has.

This song is very sad because it's about the writer of the lyrics wanting to kill himself for all the things he had done to his mother. Quote " Suicidal hate" or " Waging wars with myself."and at the end of the album version he kills himself because his moms voice saying " Hwy Justin" gets deeper and deeper until it fades out than the very last thing you hear is someone exhaling which is his last breath before he dies.

" Basically, I was in L.A. for awhile, and going through some stuff...and my mom hadn't heard from me for three or four months, and she was just kinda getting worried about me and checking into see if I had re-upped all my medication. Which I hadn't. And she probably knew that, cause of mom's intuition, you know...they always know when something's wrong. And I actually realized at the beginning of that song that it wasn't just a song about relationships anymore, it was more of a song about a universal theme about not forgetting who's important to you, and things like that...so I wanted to add my mom into the beginning of that just cause you only get one chance at having a great relationship with everybody you're surrounded with."

I think that this song is about a guy who used to drink a lot and have a lot of problems in his life. during that time his mother was always there for him and helped him out. now that he is better and can live his life, he wants to get away from her. Its not because he doesn't like her but because he wants her to be happy and live without all the problems that he has. He wants her to forget about him so she can be happy again.

Honestly...if you think that the song is about a girlfriend type...obviously you were not paying attention to the WORDS or the VIDEO. yes it is definitely about his mother. His addiction to whatever substance, and his insanity made his mother depressed. He feels that if she hated him she would at least not burden herself with worries of her twisted son. Therefor she would be happy without him.....listen to the lyrics as a whole....don't let the fact that he is talking about a women lead you to believe she was a lover. In the video, his mother's "death" signified the fact that he is trying to forget her. like I said, listen..........thanks,,Adam K.

It's amazing the impact music has on people and how certain songs trigger certain emotions in people based on their interpretation of the lyrics.

I agree with a lot of other interpretations, such as that the song is about how he feels guilty for his mother's unconditional love and his inability to give her what she deserves. All she did was love him and his actions just hurt her. I think that he had some sort of mental illness. His mother mentioned that she was checking on his medication. He said in the song, "you made me compliment when it was way too hard to take" and "you never doubted my warped opinions on things like suicidal hate". It sounds like he had spent (or still does) a lot of time in a mindset that he didn't choose to be in. I don't think this was just caused by drugs and alcohol. I think that use drugs and alcohol was triggered because of the illness. He understands that he is bringing down his mother with him and that hurts him more than anything else. He doesn't really want her to hate him. I think he just wants to tell anyone how much guilt he feels about it.

I think that this song is about a break up. Me and my boyfriend just broke up and I heard this song today and instantly connected to it. It's about the guy trying to make his ex hate him so that it becomes easier for her to move on. He needs space, much like my ex, and doesn't want her to waste her life waiting for him.
I know that the beginning stanza talks about his mother, but I think his mother is more concerned because about the breakup, and how he's doing since then and making sure he doesn't relapse. I know my mother was worried sick when me and my boyfriend broke up.
    That's how I feel anyways.

As stated over and over watching the video and listening to the recorded message, to me it is apparent it is Mother and son. flashes through his and mothers life to show/ signify how she has tried but he has basically kept her away (Hate me) flashes continue to grave (what could be) end shows he finally sees that all he would have if she were to pass is a message from her. very end showing he has finally gone to be and talk with her and seeing her eyes smiling again, knowing he now may have more to keep than the bad but poss some real good and happy times and memories. They are at the table laughing and talking, her love paid off before it was to late.

He's quoting what his loving, supportive mom always said to him, "Hate me today; Hate me tomorrow. Hate me for all the things I never did for you. Hate me so you can finally see what's good for you". (hate me until you finally figure out what 'works best for you' in this life)

Now his mom has passed on and he only has her bubbly, caring voice on his answering machine. He finally is sober for three whole months and he wishes he could say,"Thank you for believing in me, Mom, when I was in such turmoil."

His mom knew it was a phase in his life her son could hurdle, if she cloaked him with her love and support through the rough times. She is the one saying, go ahead and say you hate me, son. I know you don't really hate me. I was a young once, too. You can get through this, son. I believe in you.

Now he finally knows, "...what's good for him." He wishes he could talk to her now. The song is for her. :)

    It's about his mother.

How he's sorry for how he screwed up his life and dissapointed her by doing drugs and stuff like that.

She dies, and he regrets never being able to just say he's sorry, and he's telling her she can hate him.... " Hate me for all the things I didn't do for you.".... for not being a good son.

This song could be about either his mom or a gf. maybe both. Both relationships are important and the song fits with either one. I just wanted to say that when he sings "and she whispered how could you do this to me?" that part gives me goosebubbles. dunno why. never fails. I think it's a very powerful song. maybe he's not committing suicide. maybe he's just plain leaving

In my opinion this song is really about someone who was with someone and they had really great memories together , but he had to move on and he goes back to how it was and how much she helped him out . Its bittersweet and its as if every time he thinks about what they had he misses it and wants it back , but he knows that in the end he had to leave things alone and move on with his own life as she had to too . Its a sad song when you really listen to it , I like the intro " are you sleeping , if your sleeping are you dreaming , if your dreaming are you dreaming of me ? I can't believe you actually picked me " I can really relate to this song a lot .
