Blue October: Hate Me Meaning
Hate Me Lyrics
If your dreaming are you dreaming of me?
I can't believe you actually picked me.)
(”Hi Justin, this is your mother, and it's 2:33 on Monday afternoon.
I was just calling to see how you were doing.
You...

Although the video suggests it, the song is not about the tensions between a mother and a son. Justin, the lead singer, gave a radio interview with a dj and confirmed that it was written about one of his ex-girlfriends. It's about the guilt he felt for everything he put her through and she was always there for him. "will you never call again will you never say you loved me...hate me for all the things I didn't do for you" Because of his previous drug use and what it put both of them through he realized she was better off without him

I initially argued with my kids about the meaning of this song, but after listening closely I must admit that they may be right. Perhaps it is a layered song however and we are both correct. I thought it was a song to his girlfriend, especially because of the line "makes a porno feel like home", still kinda odd if it's to mom, but, but may have some deeper meaning. I think he is bipolar and self medicated for along time using alcohol and possibly drugs, he's in recovery and feeling like crap for the way he treated his mom (and/or girlfriend .. If layered). I think it is an apology and is asking her to foget him so she can finally be happy. And he is trying to run away and dissapear, in desperation to hide from his past. I don' t think this is about death in any manner. This sounds like many of the reviews however, the one thing I haven't see comments on is the line.. "I can't believe you picked me". If it's mom, sounds like he was adopted, which adds additional turmoil to his life... and if it's his girlfriend, then she simply chose him above all others.

The song is about his mother who has died and about how he regrets treating his mother like shit and pushing her away when she was trying to help him and be there for him when he was going through so much. Its too late for him to tell her that he's sorry and show his thanks/love to her. basically he's pissed at himself and he carries his answering machine b/c that was the last time he heard his moms voice
-
I do think the song is a son singing to a mother about all the pain he's caused her, but I just don't understand why he says "playing movies in my head that make a porno feel like home". That makes me believe it was a girlfriend, because who has porno thoughts about their mother?

This song, based on the video and lyrics, is about a man whose mother takes care of him throughout his life and even with her raising him in what seemed to be classic Americana (minus daddy), he became addicted and most likely forgot her in a way, unless he needed help. When he dies you see that even though he became a gie, his mother cared for and about him. Even in , he realizes that and wants her to forgive him and move on even though he neglected her when she helped him so much and that he should have been thankful for her.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

Okay, The Anonymous person that submitted this (In the album version you hear the phone message
that his moms leaves, and then you can hear like
kids saying "cant believe you're dead, dead, dead".
And then the song starts.) is a complete moron! What the children are singing at the beginning of the song are lyrics from Blue Octobers other song "Calling you." The words that the children are saying is thus "If your sleepin are you dreamin, If your dreamin are you dreamin of me, I can't believe you actually picked meeeee....."
Again I state that the person that thought the children said "cant believe you're dead, dead, dead" is a complete fucking moron! -
I have read the lyrics of this song and watched the video. This is what I believe the song's lyrics mean. The song is about a mother and son. The son is going through recovery for drugs, alcohol, etc. and is beginning to realize what he actually put his mother through. He states "I have to block out thoughts of you so I don’t lose my head," since he is so ashamed. He is so ashamed about his past actions, which caused his mother grief, that he further says, "There's a burning in my pride" (when he thinks of his past actions.)Moreover, he remembers how his mother's frequent deeds made him not commit suicide, however he is now going through a recovery and thoughts of killing himself are increasing. Therefore, he wants his mother to forget about him so that he can finally commit suicide. Furthermore, he realizes that he has caused the figurative death of his mother because of his actions; she gave up her life to try to save his and the many stresses have exhausted her. Now, since he has realized this, he wants to escape and cause her no more harm and carry out his plans of commiting suicide. This is why in the video he sets down the answering machine in the grave yard. The answering machine symbolizes the only way of communication between the two, and without that communication he can finally commit suicide. This action foreshadows his future actions of suicide. Therefore, in the end she states "How can you do this to me." Since he has left his mom to end his life.

Lets look at the facts. In the message at the begining of the song the message is from his mom and that is clearly stated. She says "Hi Justin, this is your mother, and it's 2:33 on Monday afternoon.
I was just calling to see how you ware doing.
You sounded really uptight last night.
It made me a little nervous, and a l... and... well... It made me nervous, it sounded like you were nervous, too.
I just wanted to make sure you were really OK,
And wanted to see if you were checking in on your medication.
You know I love you, and...
Take care honey
I know you're under a lot of pressure.
See ya. Bye bye"
In the first verse he says "And will you never say that you love me just to put it in my face?"
Could have some connection to the message.
He may have been doing drugs when he was a teenager and that seems to make a teen spend a lot of time in their room away from the parents and that might have been "The one thing that always tore us apart."
As for the grave in the end of the video, all we know about on that tape was a recording from his mother and it seems only fitting that the grave be hers. One more piece of information that proved that his mother died was the fact that he was having flashbacks of all the nice things she had done for him. THERE IS NO EX-GIRLFRIEND! -
What everyone is saying about how this is about his mother could be true, and the mom at the beginning is a good hint towards that. But, that part that gets me is if you actually listen to the song lyrics and read the song lyrics by themselves that message seems a little unlikely during a couple of spots. I am going to have to lean more towards the idea of a break up. just little things like "I have to block out thoughts of you so I don’t lose my head" sons and mother's don't usually have this issue, and for those of you that say "it's because she is dead if you listen to the end of the song he is driving far away so he never crosses their mind. Also if a son is having thoughts of his mom that "make a porno feel like home" I think that could be potentially illegal in most states. Moms don't typically have the affect of inflicting a burning pride. Also if a son kicked his drug habit he would be going after his mom's attention and she would be proud of him, but if it were an ex girlfriend that is still hung up on him and he sees himself as a bad emotional investment he may say something like "And do whatever it takes in your heart to leave me behind"
-
I believe he is singing about a woman that he loved and that loved him in return. This woman broke up with Justin, because of his drinking problem. There is evidence that it is her who in fact broke up in the lyrics: "And will you never say that you loved me just to put it in my face? ... It is I that wanted space!" She broke up saying that she loved him... It is also true that she broke up with him not because she didn't love him but because of a mistake he made - possibly doing something while drunk. He realizes his many mistakes and believes it is better for her to never see him again. If you think that the song is talking about a mother dying or a son hurting his mother. Why would he be seeing movies in his head about his mother that make a porno feel like home? That seems morally wrong...
-
I think the song is talking about both his mother and his girlfriend the first thing is the message from his mother then it talks about replaying movies in his brain that make a porno feel at home I think the song is like a suicide letter and he's telling them to forget and "hate" him for all the things he put them though.

Ok. So I realize that the song is "actually" about his mother. but that doesn't mean everyone pulls their own meanings from it.
I'm just going to go over some parts of the song and give my interpretations.
(I pull the meaning as being a breakup, as this is what I'm thinking about in my life right now)
"There's a burning in my pride, a nervous bleeding in my brain
An ounce of peace is all I want for you. will you never call again?
And will you never say that you love me just to put it in my face?
And will you never try to reach me? it is I that wanted space" to me this part screams breakup, a burning pride being the humiliation that comes along with doing something really stupid. and the fact that he sounds shocked that she "will never say that you love me, just to throw it in my face" says to me that he was expecting a retaliation and instead got silence.
My favourite part is the second verse
"the one thing that always tore us apart is the one thing I won't touch again." says, to me, that he's looking back and realizing how much this person has actually given him.
the most personal section of this song for me.
"While I was busy waging wars on myself you were trying to stop the fight.
you never doubted my warped opinions on things like suuicidal hate,
You made me comliment myself when it was just too hard to take."
this holds particular meaning with me, because I recently had a friend trying to help me. who I failed.
the final verse is the deal closer.
not only is it the ideal wording for making someone hate you so that they can move on, it's better to make them hate you "in ways hard to swallow" so that they can finally "see what's good for [them]".
that's just my longwinded interpretation.
hope it held some meaning for someone out there. -
"Hate me so you can finally see whats good for you"
... a survivor of abuse ... (talking about that abuse, weaved and intertwined in the lyricists mature experience). -
... a survivor of abuse.
