Breaking Benjamin: Cold Meaning
Cold Lyrics
One by One
Hollow heroes separate
As they run
You're so cold
Keep your hand in mine
Wise men wonder while
Strong men die
[Chorus]
Show me how it ends it's alright
Show me how defenseless you really...
-
I like how deep you all got in to it....
All though i see it being about a fiend who was shot and dieing in his arms... maybe cuz i grew up on rough streets of acres homes houston tx, i am a white boy and that is a hard black aria. Ive had lotts of friends shot infron of me but it paints a very vivid immage of a man being shot and dieing. When gun shots go off everyone clears the st. The people who play hard and say they have your back run when the heat is on, so hey ae hallow heros... then wize men wonder what would happen while the brave men jump out and speak their mind and are willing to die for what they believe in. When you are dieing of a gun shot wound you go in to shock and become cold. He is comforting his friend saying dont give up, when you are dieing you are defencless and h wants his friend to go out peacefully and show him when you die it is ok. He sees his family cuz he is passing into he next life.his friend to lay his hand on him as a good bye... -
So it is possible for the music video to be about the Salem Witch Trials and everything in it to be literal. But a lot of times, songs have a deeper meaning and the lyrics are a metaphor. In this song I think that the artist is speaking about drugs and drug addiction so when he says "you" he is addressing his addiction. A few lines that back this up are:
You're so cold
Keep your hand in mine
This is saying that although the artist knows that the drugs are terrible and "cold" that he still can't get away from them because he is too heavily addicted and needs to keep using them to get through life.
Wise men wonder while strong men die
This is the artist saying that the people who are wise enough to stay away from drugs wonder about them and how it feels to take them. The people who got addicted but are strong enough to fight back are "dying" or losing the fight against their addiction.
From the music video, the man is carrying around a huge weight which is a symbol of his addiction and the struggles that it's putting him through. In the end, he walks into the pond and lets stone drag him deep down which shows how he is giving up.
I know that this is my personal interpretation of the song and other people will disagree which is OK. Different people have different views of this because they have had different experiences in their life. That's the beauty of music, though. -
After watching the video,i feel that the main theme of this song is about the torture that was meted out to the slaves by their masters.the line which hit my mind is 'wise men wonder while strong men die'because in the video it shows a man carrying a heavy pillar to his death while the people watched him.this man with the pillar must be the strong man who had to die and the others must be the wise men.the strong man dies by getting drowned due to the weight of the pillar while the wise men wonder how to offer this man to god(by reading the holy book till the man gets drowned).
-
wow, I love everyone's opinions. It gave me some insight on what the song was about. I believe all of your opinions are correct in some fashion. The one about the witch thing has me intrigued..
-
Constant bickering eh? Well I recently went and saw B.B at Nicklebacks Dark Horse Tour and the song interpritation that I had gotten was that the girl is so cold from walking i nthe mud and water. Her father is to be condemned for being a witch. If they threw a witch in the water with a rock and they sunk, then they werent a witch. But when they say 'Strong men die' they refer to when the stronger can pull the rock up, then they die anyway. Wise men find a way to get out of it. That's just my opinion.
-
Also if you watch the video, the man carring the wood or rock, drops it in the water. Which was a common way to kill a witch. If they drown then they were a good christian, if they float they were a witch.
-
I always thought this song reminded me of Iraq. Lyrics seemed to describe the vibe on mission and the after affects on everyone that witnesses the situation there.
-
Ok, let me first start by saying that we all take the lyrics of songs and twist them in ways that we can relate to. Its what music is all about. Some of us mayt hit it on the spot, others... well they just completely go off the map.
On with it, I believe that this song is about the end of the world. The song stars off
"Crowded streets are cleared away
One by One
Hollow heroes separate
As they run
You're so cold
Keep your hand in mine
Wise men wonder while
Strong men die"
^^^ He is witnessing the end of the world as it is happening. Describing, in as best detail as possible, whats happening, while consoling, maybe, a child. Someone.
The rest
"Show me how it ends it's alright
Show me how defenseless you really are
satisfied and empty inside
Well, that's alright, let's give this another try
If you find your family, don't you cry
In this land of make-believe, dead and dry
You're so cold, but you feel alive
Lay your hand on me one last time"
I think he is speaking from a "God" point of view and and is saying that maybe if you tried harder then we can start over, but you have to die first.
the rest
"Its alright"
is him again accepting that the end has come.
Now I sat up late one night listening to this CD and tying in all of the songs in a pattern from SO COLD- the end of the world- to RAIN- the start of a new beginning.
Wish I had that damn notebook though. -
Personally, I think the meanings behind music are up to our own opinion and vision. Personally, I watched the music video, and even if that's not the real meaning I'll take it literally.
The music video shows a procession of men and women from the 1800's, many of which are dressed for what seems like a funeral. A notion made all the more possible by a preacher leading them further into a swamp carrying a bible.
Among the people in the procession, is a man carrying a large stone that is chained to his body. As they head farther into the swamp, one of the women in the group stops to grab a rose (Draw your own translation), and the man stumbles, dropping the stone and struggling to pick it back up. As the song continues they reach the edge of the swamp emptying out into a small creek. The preacher and the men and the women stop by the sides of the creek. The man carrying the stone walks into the water, eventually reaching up to his neck, and as the preacher starts reading from the bible, the man drops the stone, pulling him under the water to his death.
This was a celtic execution and the man with the stone was an adulterer who had been sentenced to death. It is left to assume that the woman with the rose was his mistress.
Good video, I suggest everyone here watches it immediately. -
i think its the death penalty- how cruel it can be- when he says its alright, the condemned man is thinking to himself that he is going to make it to heaven or the execution wont work.

Judging by lyrics alone, with no video/visual aid, I took this song as a literal interpretation of war. When the song says "crowded streets are cleared away one by one," it's an exact military term and standard operating procedure of military and war. "Hollow heroes separate as they run," meaning the enemy talks big, but does not stand their ground. "You're so cold keep your hand in mine.." when people bleed out from getting shot or wounded before they die, they turn cold from the loss of blood. "Wise men"- the most famous of wise men happen to be in the Middle East from biblical history when Jesus was born. Due to this line, it appears they could be referring to war in the Middle East. "Show me how it ends it's alright, Show me how defenseless you really are." The people in the Middle East are defenseless against their own militant tyrannical leaders and you can only be shown how defenseless they really are if you see it with your own eyes. Tv and news can't possible portray a proper visual aid of how truly helpless and defenseless these people are without someone strong to help them. They have been at war with each other for thousands of years over mere land and their own personal religious beliefs, and after thousands of years of endless, pointless battle, they needed someone strong to come in and help who they could.
-
This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway
-
I know my theory isn't as great as everyone else's, but w/e.
I've noticed humans have the tendency to blame everything on everyone else.
The people escorting him appear sad because they have no one else to blame for their sins, which the man is carrying (the block).
The man can't escape their blame (which is why he is chained to it) and almost crumbles under the pressure (he fell). He thinks it's nothing and keeps on going (picks it up and walks more). Eventually, his ignorance ultimately leads him to destruction (goes underwater with the block.) -
The Salem witch trials did not just persecute girls. John Proctor and Giles Corey were both accused of witchcraft. John was hanged and Giles was pressed to death. There were more but those two are probably the most well known. Most of the accusers were young girls. They didn't tie stones to the accused and throw them in lakes either, they had actual trials.
Plenty of people still write and read about the trials. Ever heard of The Crucible? There's also quite a few songs out there about them, Under A Killing Moon by Thrice and there's also a song by a band called Ishia. It was an important event in history and there are a lot of people with ancestors who were either accused or accusers.
Some themes of the song might connect with the trials even if it's not about them. -
Um.. I came to read what other people think the song means not say what I think it means.. even though this is an lyric interpretation site.. I just wanted to say.. in the top rated one someone talks about the Wiccan 4 leaf clover.. and that may be what it looks like.. I know nothing about Wicca.. But the logo.. Its 4 B's Ben Burnley Breaking Benjamin.. Anyone else notice that? Surely I can't be the only one.. Also I would like to pass on something I read or watched.. I can't remember which.. but the story goes.. when Ben Burnley was starting out he performed at this club and when he was finished.. the guy that came out to speak after he was finished.. told him great benjamin you broke it.. referring to the mic.. or something to that effect.. That's the story I heard.. believe or not.. your choice ;)
pee ess..
sorry for the bad grammar and dots.. its just how I do it.. lol
