Small Bump Lyrics

"Small Bump"

[Verse 1:]
You're just a small bump unborn, in four months you're brought to life,
You might be left with my hair, but you'll have your mother's eyes,
I'll hold your body in my hands, be as gentle as I can, but for now your...

It was written about a friend of his who had a miscarriage four months into the pregnancy, but he has changed it a bit so the song is coming from his point of view

Ed Sheeran wrote this song for his friend who sadly suffered a miscarraige when she was four months pregnant. Of course, he worte the song so it was like the baby was his.

This is quite a while after the song was released, but I've been thinking about it as I've listened to it a lot recently because I've kind of been on an Ed Sheeran music binge, I guess. So he's mentioned that it was about a friend who'd unfortunately had a miscarriage, and a lot of people are saying he wrote it from his point of view, as if it was his baby and what he'd think about that, or maybe it was his kid, and other's say it was his sister and he was writing it as an uncle. I think that maybe, he wrote it from the father of the child's perspective, like he did with Supermarket Flowers on his new album, which was written from his mum's pov. As I read through these, I remembered that and thought maybe that's what was happening here, because it wasn't his kid and the lyrics don't quite specifically have anything that would point only to it being his pov.

Have someone already thought about being his baby? I know he already said that is for a close friend, but let's think about it: Connect the lyrics of 'Small Bump' and 'The Man'.

The last one is about his first love and teenager girlfriend, Alice. They broke up when his career began to take off. That's why he says: "Cos I still love you and I need you by my side if I could, the irony is if my career and music didn't exist, in 6 years yeah you'd probably be my wife with a kid ..."

So, if he wrote this song after (+ - 2011) and before (x - 2014) and those six years may be the time that they are apart, I'm guessing they broke up somewhere between 2006-2008, exactly the year he left home and went to London to pursue his music career.

He was 17 at the time, they were too young, maybe younger when it happened and for sure didn't expect a baby, like he says in the lyrics of Small Bump: "But for now you're a scan of my unmade plans ..."

And that's why I believe that this song is about him and not a close friend or a sister. Idk if this is the true, and I understand the other theories too, but for me that one makes more sense.

This song is originally about a friend of his who had a miscarriage, but he put a spin on it to make the baby his own. He sings of everything the baby will be until the final lines, where all of his hopes are crushed, and the baby is dead. It is an excruciatingly sad song, but an amazing one at that.

This song is about Ed's friend who experienced a miscarriage a 5 months. He wrote it in 1st person so he could put more emotion into the song. He is not the father.

Everybody is saying the song is about Ed's friend having a miscarriage, but when you listen to it more carefully, it becomes much more! To me at the start he just describes how it is like awaiting the child, he is probably young since he talks about some "unmade plans" and they struggle to get ready for the baby. The second part is a little later,(I think)the the lady gives birth 4 months early, which is of course premature so they once again struggle to keep the baby alive and they do enjoy a little bit of time with the baby, but it eventually dies because of it's young age... It's cleverly written and the beat is catchy, the song is beautiful yet sad, you can definetly reconize Ed Sheeran's work here!

To all that are saying this song is about Ed's sister, it's not. Ed doesn't have a sister. The song was carefully written for his friends who had miscarried their baby together. Since it was a touchy subject, he wrote it in his perspective AS IF it were his own child. Ed was NOT the father of the baby. He was just trying to help his friends through the grief of losing their baby.

Ed Sheeran's either friend or sister was pregnant, and 4 months in she had a miscarriage. I think some of you should watch your comments, my mom has had many miscarriage's and I shouldn't even be alive, and had a rough birth, but miscarriages are serious and no reason to joke around or be disrespectful.

His friend was pregnant, but she had a miscarriage at about 4 months. The song goes on about how excited etc everybody is, and the last verse it becomes apparent that the baby has died. Although it was his friend he has written the song as if it was himself/partner,

This song is about Ed's sisters baby. She had a miscarriage at 4 month. During the song he isn't trying to say he could be the father, he is saying they may have the same traits (you may be stuck with my hair) because their related. He is putting himself in the babies position and talking about it like the mom or baby could be him cause he feels like one with the baby. Although he is sad and angry about the event he thinks god had better plans for the unborn child. He wants to be the best uncle he could but he can't now. It would have be his "one and only" nephew
