Ed Sheeran: Lego House Meaning

Album cover for Lego House album cover

Song Released: 2011

Lego House Lyrics

I'm gonna pick up the pieces,
and build a lego house
when things go wrong we can knock it down

but these three words have two meanings,
there's one thing on my mind
It's all for you

And it's dark in a cold December, but I've got ya to...

before watching the video i thought it was about a boy who is madly in love with his friend ("my three words have two meanings but there's one thing on my mind" wich means that when he says 'i love you' to this girl she thinks that he means it in a friendly way but what he truly mean is that she is the love of his life) and he's ready to do anything to make her happy and to be the best he can for her but then when i watched the video i understood that ed sheeran was talking about a fan (and he used the first person to give the song more emotion) lego house is the relation ship between the fan and the idol because a fan build the success of the singer through voting for him, buying his albums when ed says "I'm out of sight, I'm out of mind" it shows that it's about a fan because the idols most of the time are ignorant of the existance of a fan and then he says "i'll do it all for you in time" means even though the fan is aware that he doesn't represent anything for his idole he is still going to help him whenever he needs help. but the fan is strugling her/his own life so he surrender up his heart and swap it for ed's and lives the life of his idole to escape his own misery.

Lego House by Ed Sheeran is a actually a lyrics poem but isn't read as a poem since Ed is a singer. This song is metaphorical, it is not really talking about Lego. Lego, in this context, represents the breaking of a relationship. While the whole lego house symbolises a sustained relationship. "I'm gonna pick up the pieces and build a lego house, if things wrong we can knock it down". This verse/stanza simply means I am going to mend our relationship by sustaining the broken pieces of our relationship and if things go wrong we can break our relationship.

My cousin, young crush, wanted to be together, so he said he would build me a lego house and he said this to mean he would always be there for me. LOVE is an open door. Lego house represents LOVE that is pure, before we knew what money, fame and even before we knew about sex. Innocence lost and returned.

This song is about Ed being in a struggling relationship. "Lego House" is clearly a metaphor stating that not everything is permanent. Relationships end, people die, and bridges burn. Even the Earth, our planet, is not permanent. With these two pieces of information, it can be infered that Ed isn't sure is relationship will last a long time.

well i feel, its about a guy who see's his life in the writers lyrics.. HE feels as if that each and every word of ED's song's ,is like ED is talking to him. He feels that ED is the only one who is understanding his feelings..

personally i don't think this song talks about relationships at all..

in my life ... every time i was broken or wasted and tired of everything .. i would listen to songs and i feel that the song is all about me ... and i feel there is someone out there in this world who actualy knows how i am feeling

I feel that he uses the phrase Lego house to represent the miserable fan. The fan tries to recreate himself as ed,his idol. Lego are used to model or recreate things just as the fan did to his own life. Theoretically this means the fan has had a horrible life, such as ed did before he was famous. Because of this he sees how ed was able to rise as a great musician and wanted to be like him. EXACTLY like him. So he surrenders his heart and swaps it for eds so that he can build a model or Lego house of eds own life

I actually thought its about a girl and guy in a friends with benefits relationship. The guy has now started to like her but settling for being there to help as a friend

I don't think this song is about a romantic relationship, friendship, or internal struggle. It's about all of them at once. Sometimes the "weakest" parts of us/the other person are also the most important, and learning how to love those parts is necessary but can take retrospect and time.... they make us who we are. Additionally, IMO this is not one person (or part of a person) singing, but 2 "parts" at once with certain lines relating to 1 or the other, as a struggle by definition is never 1 sided. I've include a personal example of my own below... and could just have easily written similar comments about my own struggle internally. As much as I comment on myself, it is becuase I cannot speak from her side, and the entire song is a testament to her patience and internal beauty, and how much we now care about each other because of this. It's about her.

I met my girlfriend "in a cold December" where she just wanted me to keep her warm after a breakup. Little did she know was I going through a battle inside as well, with heavy drinking being the easiest out, but drinking was not the problem. It was internal pain and anxiety. Fortunately she stuck with me through this, and I think we both love each other more now because of the struggle we both went through and still are.

“I'm gonna pick up the pieces,
    And build a Lego house
When things go wrong we can knock it down”

(ME) After rehab I was not totally myself, and exploring a new world after being “exposed”. Being a perfectionist and engineer I always figured there was an "equation" to fix me. The anxiety of not being able to build the lego house perfectly on the first attempt would have been too much. Having a calming person with me to let me know that it was not a quick fix and wouldn’t be easy, made it easier to fight through failure

“My three words have two meanings,
There's one thing on my mind, it's all for you”

I love you = you love I (me)

“And it's dark (started) in a cold December, but I've got ya to keep me warm
And if you're broken I'll mend ya
And keep you sheltered from the storm that's raging on now”

The quickened pace refers to a flashback (in this case my GF) she just wanted a warm body after her most recent break up (in a December). It turns out we were more than that, but at the same time I was broken and a burden. I hide at her apartment from the world for 2 months, but she never fed my anxiety and still can’t explain why she wanted to help me. She let me take myself to the “bottom” where a stubborn person like me could only be fixed. She calmed the raging anxiety (storm) within.

“I'm out of touch, I'm out of love
I'll pick you up when you're getting down
And out of all these things I've done I think I love you better now”

    *after rehab
(HER now) I don’t understand this, I’m breaking down too (you’re not where I expected)
but I’m still here to calm the storm and comfort the pain.
    *2 options; or both
    1. I’ve done so much for you, and aside from whether you appreciate it, I know I’m a good person
    2. This has been so hard, but I knew I saw something in the darkness. He makes you who you are and I love both the new and old you.

"I'm out of sight, I'm out of mind
I'll do it all for you in time
And out of all these things I've done I think I love you better now"

Ditto….. I knew this person was there and he was worth the effort…. Ditto also means the other person is saying it now too

“I'm gonna paint you by numbers and color you in
If things go right we can frame it, and put you on a wall”

(HER) Back to the original problem, as much as a perfectionist I know he is, I thought I could change his mind with my “equation” because something was flawed with his. Mine will fix him for sure, and I get both parts of him.

"And it's so hard to say it but I've been “STUCK AT 4”
And I'll surrender up my heart and swap it for yours"

OK, I admit this isn’t what I was expecting….my last shot is to put my pride aside…. I need to look from your eyes. “Maybe you entered your darkness because of your light”

“I'm out of touch, I'm out of love
I'll pick you up when you're getting down
And out of all these things I've done I think I love you better now”

Beat picks up here… happiness shows itself.

“I'm out of sight, I'm out of mind, I'll do it all for you in time
And out of all these things I've done I think I love you better now”

    same

    "Don't hold me down,
I think my braces are breaking and it's more than I can take"

    one word…. FUCK

“And if it's dark in a cold December, but I've got ya to keep me warm
And if you're broken I'll mend ya
And keep you sheltered from the storm that's raging on now”
    fairly self-explanatory…. peace

This song is about having something beforehand, (ie a relationship/being in love) something that you dont realize the importance of; and losing it. Later on, when you've "been there before", you know what you've lost and you know that it was a mistake. You know how to appreciate it, you've grown up from where you were before; and you realize that what you had with that certain someone was most likely irreplaceable and that if you had just been mature enough to realize what you had; this and any situation pertaining to this would have seemed silly and immature to you at the time. But you've learned from youre mistakes, and even though you cant help yourself or her, when you see someone else about to make a similar mistake, you know what to do to correct and make the situation right for them

I definitely think there is something to the Ed and Rupert looking alike.

At first I saw it as a joke on us. Like oh hey he got rupert to play him in this video (That's why the look alike) and the song is about some girl. And then you see the framed picture and realize that rupert isn't ed, he is a fan. and in the context of the video it definitely seems to be a stalker fan.

but then I think that them looking alike may be a chance to interpret the song differently than a love song. maybe rupert is a version of ed and that's why they look alike. that this is a song written to himself. then the song becomes being about maybe feeling disconnected with who you are and trying to improve, but in the end no matter what loving yourself.

I think its about a guy and a girl. They broke up for some reason and prolly this guy not ready to love. So he back down, or maybe the girl is the one who's not ready when this guy tried too hard for her. (dont hold me down i think my braces are breaking, and its more than i can take) But time passed by, and he realize that he cannot live without her ( and after all these things i've done i will love u better now).

Ok. So i saw this in an interview.
Ed's girlfriend had gifted him lego, he made a lego house (he loves lego). And then when their relationship ended, he was collecting all her gifts, and the lego fell, it broke into pieces. (things go wrong, we can knock it down) and Ed thought 'Over with that'. So lego house is a metaphor, for his relationship.

"Those 3 words have two meanings"
He is not sure if he is 'in love with her' or if he loves her as a person. Both are for her because, its a little of both for him. He's confused.

My interpretation is quite different from everyones. (just the lyrics)

There was this book I was reading about a guy who said "I'm out of love" and out of touch. He won't let anyone in. Not even her. All of it is for her. He's out of feeling, cold and blunt, cause he surrendered his heart to her and only her. . . and its not a bitter-sweet love tale. . . it's cold.

As the story goes on, the girl he proposed to, cried, saying she was happy. Then at the night of the proposal, she attempted suicide. Now he is paying for her medical bills alone as she is still in hospital. She's broken. "her life connected to a tube" (from the book) sleeping for so many years.

This guy has had it tough, and he won't let go of her. And, if only it was as simple, as swapping hearts, maybe his wouldn't ache as hard? Yet he is her cover, her shelter, whether she knows this or not.

He loves her, He feels he needs her.
But he has given up everything
although he's now a different person. Different from who he used to be, "its all for [her]"

    Its dark, his life
His dreams, became filth filled, instead of
    fulfilled.
But he's still trying to love her as best he can.

He's doing it all, but he can't see her, he won't. He's at his worst, and its more than anyone can take. "He hates it"
he "can't bear it any more"
Now, he feels as though people will easily leave him, its driving him almost insane.
he "doesn't want to be left alone again"

Life is whimsical to him, if things go wrong, it will be knocked down. If only it was as simple? So that's why he tries to make it that simple, only in his favour. If only? he feels he has become a child.

    He loves her.
I love you. Don't let me go. These are his two meanings.

But through all that has happened, he will try to love, better now. Without the misery, and without the self-hate.

To me, this guy, is like the one in lego house in many ways, and for this guy in the story, I feel it is time, he learnt to let go. A man at his breaking point... lonely, ashamed, and most importantly, he desperately, wants to be loved, loved in a way to will last forever.
