This song is about the last time Jeff Lynne saw his good friend, Stephen Joseph Woollam, whose name was incorrectly spelled as Woolam on the band's first album. The inspiration for this song was the EW&F album That's The Way Of The World, released shortly after Woollam's death. The "high and higher" part of That's The Way Of The World also inspired the "higher and higher" part of Livin' Thing. It's profoundly sad to listen to these songs and think of how Jeff must have felt at the time.
