Florence + the Machine: Hardest of Hearts Meaning
Hardest of Hearts Lyrics

The song is a tale of a person who forever guards themselves from falling in love lest they be hurt like they have in the past
Her love can be expressed at inappropriate times in a way that cannot be controlled (there is love in your body but you can’t hold it in, it pours from your eyes and spills from your skin). She is so hardened by previous heartbreaks that a tender touch or kind kiss can be immensely painful (tenderest touch leaves the darkest of marks and the kindest of kisses break the hardest of hearts)
Her heart is hardened and protected as a result of heartbreak (hardest of hearts)While she is capable of love (there is love in your body) but she has difficulty expressing it (but you can’t get it out; it gets stuck in your heart won’t come out of your mouth). Love and affection serve as a stark reminder of the pain she has suffered (sticks to your tongue and shows on your face that the sweetest of words have the bitterest taste). : Florence explains to herself why she shields herself from love. While she still cares to love (Darling Heart, I loved you from the start), she has been reckless in where she extends that love (but you’ll never know what a fool I’ve been) she knows that she must be wiser lest she be hurt once more (but that’s no excuse for the state I’m in) and hence she must keep her heart and love under lock and key. Her ability to love draws her to her lover (there is love in our bodies and it holds us together), but her prior pain makes her pull away (but pulls us apart when we’re holding each other). She is driven by the primal desire to love and seek refuge in relationships (we all want something to hold in the night), even if she sustains injury in the process (we don’t care if it hurts or we’re holding too tight)She attempts to stop herself from becoming enamoured, but this effort proves futile (my heart swells like a water at weight, can’t stop myself before its too late). She warns to hold on to your heart because she has thrown herself into a relationship (hold on to your heart because I’m coming to take you) which may potentially cause pain and damage (hold on to your heart because I’m coming to break you)
