Foo Fighters: Best of You Meaning
Song Released: 2004
Best of You Lyrics
I'm your fool
Everyone's got their chains to break
Holdin' you
Were you born to resist or be abused?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the...

okay well before I saw the video I thought that it was about a guy kinda professing his love for this girl who has had her heartbroken a lot, but then I saw the video. In the video they have a lot of clips of people basically having sex. and then I thought "hey 'best of you=virginity'?"
i know it's stupid but no one had said anything about. -
its about a monkey who gets shot then daves like "hey give me the best of you" yep I'm right your all wrong!!!

Hey.
This song is not about Kurt cobain. Although everyone seems to be ubsessed in thinking that grohl is always talking about him in his songs, you're sadly mistaken. I think there are some songs (a friend of a friend) that do discuss cobain, but not best of you.
The foo's toured with John kerry for the us election and this song is about bush taking "the best of americans". In your honor cd is dedicated to kerry since they wrote many of the songs on the album while touring with him and were inspired by him. -
I think this song, for everyone, can have very different meanings, all depending on what you're going through in your life.
To me, right now, it has two meanings.
1) it could mean that someone is getting the best of someone they used to (or even possibly are still with) and they want to know if they are cheating. Saying he is sick of starting over, meaning he doesn't want to get into another relationship and start fresh, getting to know someone and all.
2) asking if someone is holding back the person you want to get involved with. Asking if someone is getting the best of that person from things an old lover had done in the past. Seeing if the one you are now in love with is still holding on to old feelings and let downs from a previous relationship. Meaning that they are still "getting the best of" them by their past hurts still lingering around.
I dunno, that's just my thoughts. -
I'm quite sure I've read dave say something along the lines of when he writes songs he leaves them quite open for interpretation for everyone to be able to use the song for themselves in their own way...
Best of you however I'm almost positive he said that he did not write it as some sort of 'love' song as such and was aiming it more at politics and being stuck in something and struggling and you can't do anything about it because of the restraints of politics... (note all the
he also said that the new album was influenced by the current us government - but didn't want to be so "extreme" as green day was.
But generally everyone has their own interpretations of each song which is why foo songs are so good so everyone can relate their own situations to them.
But of course... Everyone sees it as a song about a relationship between two people probably gone wrong... As I did -
This song is not about Kurt cobaine. For the last time, the only song dave ever wrote about being in nirvana was friend of a friend! And he wrote that in'90, before nevermind came out. Jeez.
Otherwise, the other interpretations seem pretty valid. -
If you've ever been in love, this song is for you.
I think it's about loving someone so much it hurts. Think about someone you couldn't stop thinking about. It fills you with hope and with fear.
It brings you so much joy thinking you may be with this person, but that fear of rejection or loss plays a major roll too.
I'm not going to cite any of the lyrics, but I will point to the kick ass music video. Look at the images that show the extremes of what is good and harsh in life. Birth, death, sex and loss is all in there and whoever is on his mind is taking him to the extremes of both good and bad. -
I think the name of the album says it all:
IN YOUR HONOR
i have it believed this song has to do with Friendship Dave had with Kurt:
~"You gave me something that I didn't have"~
Its been reported that Dave suffered a deep serious depression after Kurts Death. I believe the whole album has to do with the memory of Kurt and how David is "...getting tired of starting again..." and swears "[to never give in..." again to his depression and "refuse[s]" to let the depression get the "Best" of him and only keep alive all the good
i also have to agree with the opinions of all the other interpeters truely 100% so if there is anyone outthere who doesn't completely agree with me, please refer to the others before me
Let a Prophets will be done... -
I think this song is about all those things in life that get the "best of you". All the things that take advantage of your life, however not necessarily in a bad way. Especially watching the video, when it shows the baby and the little girl and love, I think it talks about those things that get the "best of you" in life however, it's not a bad thing that they take advantage of you.

Even though he "semi" denies it, Grohl faced depression after Kurt Cobain's death. This is about the bumpy life he faced for a while after, and how he always thought of Kurt, wondering if he was happy. This is especially provoked feeling by all the murder theory's or if it was a suicide, so he's wondering if it was a suicide or a murder. He's only written or realised this so late as he has been able to face up to his fears, most of Grohl's lyrics are based around Kurt Cobain or Nirvana, sometimes even Courtney Love.

Well, I thought at first that the song referred to a break up. The guy was very upset by the break up, and was questioning the new man in the ex girlfriend's life, whether he was getting the 'best' of her. 'Best' meaning the good bits that he just couldn't appreciate at the time.
The more I have thought about it though, it seems as though he may have meant the song in a sarcastic way, and was talking about someone getting the 'best' of you meaning that they are taking advantage of you. I'm from Australia, and when someone 'gets the best of you,' it means they really irritate you or get under your skin, they really annoy you. So, the song could possibly be the personification of love-hate relationships, where he ultimately feels a lot for her, but is constantly in conflict with her. He feels as though he should either 'resist' the attempt at love, or be 'abused' as the natural consequence of loving someone for him, has resulted in feeling abused ( a broken heart etc).
The fact that he laments at the end that he can't be bothered trying anymore suggests that despite his attempts to stand strong and not go for another girl, he does it anyways, and lives to regret it, as his heart gets weaker every time. its a song that can be seen from a few points of view, an angry ex crying out to the wind, or a man who is getting older, and is realising that his 'best' may well be gone, and he is old and beaten by life, or then again, it could be a song meaning that is angry that someone took the 'best' that he had to offer, and abused it, and he is questioning whether or not somone has done that, or is doing that to her (abusing her and taking the 'best' she has to offer, such as trust, faith, love etc, all the things that he has lost). Well, that's my 5 cents. :) -
I think that this song can have two different interpretations. The most obvious being that from the perceptive of loss, the least obvious one is the people in your day to day life truly getting the best of you? Do your friends and lovers know how much you truly care? Do you make an effort? Or are you the type that once you experience the heartache of loss everything else loses meaning? But then again thats just my two cents.

The Best of You is about a guy who broke up with a girl and can't help but wonder why he can't be the one for her. He wonders about who she's with and if they ever made her happy. He then realizes that he has to move on and finally sees passed her.
