Some Nights Lyrics

Some nights, I stay up cashing in my bad luck
Some nights, I call it a draw
Some nights, I wish that my lips could build a castle
Some nights, I wish they'd just fall off

But I still wake up, I still see your ghost
Oh Lord, I'm still not...

Well, what I heard was this. We've been in an awful fucking war for ten years, and the singer's sister lost her husband in the war and he wishes he could tell the father about it... how wonderful the son is. Dying in the sun? Come on boys it's time for war? The martyr reference. It makes sense to me. What do we stand for? As a country, as individuals? The lies are the words that got us into this mess. Listen again and vote for this if you agree.

    If you would listen:
Some nights I stay up, cashing in my bad luck, some nights I call it a draw: Some nights, he tries to well, try, and other nights, he gives up.
Some nights, I wish my lips could build a castle, some nights I wish they'd just fall off: He always has so much to say, but no way to say it.
But I still wake up, i still see your ghost, O Lord, I'm still not sure what I stand for: He doesn't know his purpose n this earth, but he still has faith in God.
Most night, I don't know, anymore: Most times, he doesn't know his purpose for anything.
This is it boys, this is war, what are we waiting for?: He is at war with his heart, and faith in God.
Why don't we break the rules already?: Why doesn't he just give up and change?
I was never one to believe the hype, save that for the black and white: he doesn't want to stick to everyone's opinionated feelings, he is himself.
I try twice as hard, and I'm half as liked, but here they come again to jack my style: Everyone is judgmental, and he is trying to stay up to par, it isn't working, and they all force their opinions on him.
And that's alright, I found a martyr in my bed tonight: He doesn't try to fight, and he realizes that all of his sins are piling high.
She stops my bones from wondering just who I am: He realizes he needs to stay faithful.
Well some nights I wish that this all would end, 'cause I could use some friends for a change: He wishes that he could stop the endless battle with his soul, and not waste away his life alone.
And some nights I'm scared that you'll forget me again, some nights I always win: Sometimes, he's worried that God will forget that one good deed and sometimes, it all comes back around.
    *Already did this part*
So this is it? I sold my soul for this? He gave up on faith to fall into depression.
I washed my hands of God for this?: He stopped having trust in God.
I miss my mom and dad for this: He left his family.
When I see stars, when I see stars, that's all they are, when I see stars?: He doesn't see anything special about anything anymore.
When I hear songs, they sound like this one, so come on!: He hears nothing happy anymore, and wants to know why this had to happen.
Well, this is it guys, this is all, five minutes of this and I'm bored again: He's done with his life, tired of the last five minutes he has left.
Ten years of this, I'm not sure if anyone understands: He has been alone with no faith for ten years, he doesn't think there's anyone who is in the same position.
This one is not for the folks at home: He doesn't want the people he knows to see the position he's in.
Sorry to leave, mom, I had to go: He didn't want to leave his family, he thought he had to.
Who the f*ck wants to die alone, all dried up in the desert sand: Who wants to live the kind of life he had, with no one beside him all alone in the oppressing difficulty.
My heart's breaking for my sister, in the con that she called "love": He feels awful that his sister is going through painful times with a fake love, and he wasn't there.
When I look into my nephew's eyes, man, you wouldn't believe, the most amazing thing, that can come from some terrible lie: His sister went through tough times, but look at the amazing thing that came out of it, making him realize, that every cloud has a silver lining.
The other night, you wouldn't believe, the dream, I just had about you and me: He had a dream, that him and God could restore their "relationship", and he could try and rebuild his life.
I called you up, but we'd both agreed, it's best to keep our distance: He prayed, but didn't have any faith left, so he kept away from God.

I think that this song is much deeper than girls, or guys, or even living life to the fullest. I believe that this song is about a mixture of things, but mostly about Nate's experience as a musician. He is wondering whether or not he has made the right decision being a musician, and if the past ten years of life have really been worth it. He wants to know what difference he has made in the world, what he stands for as a person. "This is it? I sold my soul for this?" meaning, music. However, the only person that truly knows the meaning of these lyrics is Nate himself, and personally, I think that not knowing makes every word worth while. This song is incredible and has changed my life.

There are a few here who have come close here.

It is a brilliant misical derivation of the book "the Red Badge of Courage".

It is about the thoughts and emotions of a common soldier going into battle. It is considered a conical literary acheivement by an American author (Stephen Crane).

Taking place during the American Civil War, the story is about a young private of the Union Army, Henry Fleming, who flees from the field of battle. Overcome with shame, he longs for a wound — a "red badge of courage" — to counteract his cowardice. When his regiment once again faces the enemy, Henry acts as standard-bearer.

It is about man's eternal quest for the meaning of life. It is his quest based on his expieriences, but it is made relevant for all of us by tying it to one's thoughts at nights. Who of us hasn't spent many nights staring at the ceiling or out the window, wondering why am I here and what is my path? It is constantly changing with each new experience and passage in life.

You're all wrong. This song is about treats. Sometimes when you're really good and well behaved you get treats. Sometimes people lie and make you do things but then don't give you treats and then you must truly question your obedience and what you stand for.

The singer then goes on to say "Five minutes in and I'm bored again. Ten years of this, I'm not sure anybody understands." This in reference to when you're waiting for your owner and they've gone in the shop and it feels like it has been forever.

    I know this because I'm Nate's dog.

He's talking about his music career, he does his best not to sell out, trying keep his individuality, trying hard to impress people but they don't return the amount love he's putting out, no success but still able to find acceptance with the one person lays with at night that stops him from reevaluating his worth, some nights its worth it, some nights it sucks ass, the line between band mates and friends and enemies begins to blue,.. He feels like people are dumb and fickle wen it comes to music and is exhausted wen he see's its true and it gets harder to remember why he's even trying, he's problems at home he wish he could help out with but instead he feels obligated to his music and so called fans... This song is some ganstah shit.

Notice how, you are all fighting about this song and it's interpretation, when in actuallity all you have to do to understand it is to listen to the lyrics. These are other peoples interpretations and shouldnt be judged because they did not ask for your opinion they quite simply stated there opinion and your 2 sense didn't need to be added. It's called your own opinion for a reason. Be nice, meanness is deffinately unneeded.

I figured that i should add that i know the real interpretation to this song because im Nate's half sister's cats neighbors 7th cousin 3 times removed from his 4th step-fathers side ex- spouses former best friends brothers turttle's egg. Phew!! I didnt think i could pull off this long one!- lol

Since we are all anonymous here and making up interpretations as we are just guessing; i like the answer the best of whomever gave the assumed interpretation and said that they know this to be so because that is what it meant to them. I find this to be the most honest answer and that it shows how this person knows how to be truthful to one self. Bless you! Shall you find many successes in all your endeavors.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

Bullshit. First of all, it says "some terrible nights" not lies. So it would mean maybe his sister got tricked into thinking she was in love by a "con" and then she got knocked up. Then "you wouldn't believe the most amazing things that could come from some terrible nights" obviously talking about his wonderful nephew.

I know this because I bought the album and it has the lyrics right in the fuckin cover. And I'm Jack's sister

I found the overall meaning to be about our morals and beliefs. We adopt the morals of society without really believing in them ourselves...our morals and beliefs are so flawed that we are willing to bend them for any excuse, just for one night. We easily override our morals with emotions. We can no longer find what we as individuals personally stand for. Soldiers fight in a war that many of them do not even find reason for, they're told its for the honor of their country. We can no longer be martyrs who bravely suffer or die for what they believe in because we don't really believe that strongly in anything.

I believe this song is simply about a person who is lost. He is torn between two or possibly more clashing ideals and is attempting to choose the right path. He doesn't know what he wants, as described in the opening lines "some nights I stay up cashing in my bad luck, some nights I call it a draw. some nights I wish that my lips could build a castle, some nights I wish they'd just fall off." Sometimes he wants one thing, sometimes he wants the other.By saying "I'm still not sure what I stand for?", he's implying that "some nights" he feels inclined to follow a certain path, and other nights he is inclined to follow the opposite. He attempts to stand up for what he believes in but "is half as liked" for doing such. However, as he observes others around him who are firm in their beliefs and are willing to make the decisions they believe are right, he feels the strength to be who he wants to be despite the hatred and demise that can come from doing so. This is evident in the line "i found a martyr in my bed tonight, she stops my bones from wondering just who I am." Again, this kind of fluctuation from one ideal to the other leaves him caught in a state of almost limbo, where he is sometimes for one side and sometimes for the other. This unfortunately leaves him in a position where he lacks true friends. (some nights I wish that this all would end because I could use some friends for a change).

To me, Its about this dude who loses the meaning of life when he goes to war and sees the horror of murder around him, and life seems so cheap that he wonders what the point is. He wonders what the hell he stands for, if people can just go around taking each others lives, it kinda undermines his existence and he feels like he doesnt belong. He doesnt know who he but he tries to stay positive and be grateful, to think it through andtry to find aswers.. He starts regretting going to war “ I sold my soul for this, I missed my mom and dad for this?” He starts thinking the stars are something divine, like the souls of people he killed, or his hopes and dreams and he has to tell himself that they are just stars, cuz hes sick of his optimismo falling through. He gets bored of not knowing and feeling trapped, he wants someone to understand him (he also talks about wanting friends and trying twice as hard but being half as liked earlier) but no one does, not even his love, alter he has changed so much away at war. He recognises that every event has positive and negative outcomes, like his sister being knocked up and abandoned by some dickhead. Obviously that Sacks, but his nephew was born, and there is beautiful hope in his eyes, which kinda reflects that some good crud ,ight have come out of his terrible experience of war. Its kinda relevant to people watching it too, coz everyone questions their lives at some point, but this shows how you can be positive and keep your head up. Hunt for the answers and apréciate the good stuff. I like how “lies” is autotuned cuz its a lie haha
