We are Young Lyrics
I need to get my story straight
My friends are in the bathroom
Getting higher than the Empire State
My lover she's waiting for me
Just across the bar
My seats been taken by some sunglasses
Asking 'bout a scar...
-
give me second I,
I need to get my story straight,
(The boy wants to explain)
My friends are in the bathroom getting higher than the Empire state
(my friends are high, but he's not like them)
My lover, she's waiting for me, just across the bar,
(my girlfriend is lonely, the boy's drunk)
my seats been taken by some sunglasses, asking 'bout a scar,
(someone is asking his girlfriend why she has some scars, presuming he gave them to her)
I know i gave to you months ago, (admitting he hurt her)
I know you're trying to forget
(he knows she's trying to move on)
but between the drinks and subtle things (how he gets drunk and his regular behaver)
the holes in my appolagies, (how his excuses make no sense)
You know i'm trying hard to take it back, (you can see i'm trying to quit)
So if by the time, the bar closes, (if he's completely wasted,) and you feel like falling down, (and the girl feels betrayed)
i'll carry you home, (he'll still be there)
Tonight, we are young, so let's set the world on fire, (they're young, so lets not dwell on our past issues)
we can burn brighter, than the sun, 2x (they can have a good future together)
now i know that i'm not, all that you got (he knows that she's breaking up with him) i just thought, we could new ways to fall apart, (don't break up for the classic ways)
but our friends are back, (they have people by there side)
so lets raise a cup, (so let's get drunk)
'cause i found someone to carry me home (now he has someone to help him too)
Tonight, we are young, so let's set the world on fire, (they're young, so lets not dwell on our past issues)
we can burn brighter, than the sun, 2x (they can have a good future together)
Carry me home tonight
just carry me home tonight,
Carry me home tonight
just carry me home tonight,
(she's accepting his appolagy)
The world is on my side, (other people support this)
i have no reason too run, (he's getting back into drinking)
so will some one come and carry me home?
(and he got wasted again)
The angels never arived, (he never got forgiven)
but i can hear the chior (he knows that she's reconsidering)
so will some come and carry me home tonight? (he's addmitting he needs help)
Tonight, we are young, so let's set the world on fire, (they're young, so lets not dwell on our past issues)
we can burn brighter, than the sun, 2x (they can still have a good future)
So if by the time, the bar closes, (so if that he's still not there)
and you feel like falling down, (and your hurt,)
i'll carry you home tonight, (i'll get better and surprise you.)
all in all, it's about a guy getting drunk, and he hurt his girl friend, so she broke up with him and he wants her back, she accepts, but he falls back into bad habits, and she get's mad again, and he tries to stop, and promises that he will.
Or it can be interripted as a youth song saying that that you should live while you can,
or it could be reffering to aids or HIV -
This song is about a couple who is addicted to hard drugs and he is revealing conflicting feelings that illustrate his constant urge. Carrying someone home represents the help/support provided by a sponsor.
Should he go with his friends to get high without or should he just drink instead. The scar is the pain/concern that is obvious based on her behavior. The last drug binge that they went on was a month ago. "if you feel like falling down" means giving in to temptation. When the friends return they raise a glass to celebrate that they did not join them. As the night continues, he stands strong (no reason to hide) even though he was craving ('hear the choir') but he was the one who needed support ('Will someone come care him home tonight'). But in the end he has composed himself and is willing/able to be the voice of reason (I will carry you home tonight). -
Ok, so it's most likely about a girl Nate [Ruess] has feelings for, but he waited too long to tell her and she has moved on (the sunglasses asking her aboutthe scar). She has the scar b/c she thought that Nate cared about her but now she doesn't and Nate is trying to explain that he does care about her, but she won't listen. He is letting her know that he will always be there for her, even if she wants nothing to do with him- "So if by the time, the bar closes, and you feel like falling down, I'll carry you home…" So then, Nate decides to just forget about everything and he tries to have a good time, though he made a good choice earlier, when he tries to explain himself to his "lover," because he doesn't go and get high with his friends, he probably wouldn't anyway. So, when he wants someone to carry him home, he wants someone who will care about him and support him, which he finds then loses. This song is a bit hard to interprate, but then again, (sorry, Nate. I love you, but I have to say this) I think Nate is a very complicated person who has a lot of feelings that he's unsure of. Great song. Great band. <3

I think this song is about struggling to get through a rough time and just letting lose and looking for someone to care for him (Nate) and showing that he is capable of caring for the girl he "gave a scar," most likely emotional scar. Nate's friends do not do drugs, as he said before. Let's remember that some of this song was written after Nate got really drunk. It's still a good song and I still love Fun. though.

I think that it draws a parallel to A Clockwork Orange, or Dennis Hopper's character in Blue Velvet, drug use and S&M. I agree that it is not autobiographical, but a social criticism much in the same light as sounds by groups like The Smiths or Housemartins where musically the anthem is uplifting, but lyrically, it is a dark social commentary. This dissemmetry/incongruity between the elements of this song certainly criticizes how people go about "keeping up appearances", when everything has actually run amuck.

I think this song is about a relationship that is suffering. I think the man in the song has hurt his girlfriend accidentally (either emotionally or physically), he regrets it deeply and wants to fix it.
I believe the line where he says "but our friends are back, so lets raise a cup" is supposed to be alluding to the two of them talking in private about their problems but their friends return part way through the conversation so they tried to hide the fact they are having a serious conversation about their future by toasting and pretending everything is ok
The core of the song is saying yes we are broken but we are having a fun night out so lets live it up and leave our problems at home, we love each other and we can make this work. -
Totally agree with top rated interpretation but have to add that in this song I find a deeply profound commentary on life today, which I can only assume is intentional. How sad but true it is that so many of our relationships are hurting and both victim and abuser want and need reconciliation and forgiveness. I wish that more of us could find our consolation in the arms of Jesus than in the fleeting escape of the bar scene, one nighters, etc. Great Song though. Melancholy and beautiful.

Give me a second I,
I need to get my story story straight My friends are in the bathroom
Getting higher than the Empire State
(A heartbroken girl trying to put her life back on track meeting a new guy is approached by the one who put her life in misery and explain about his friends and indicates his regrets of broken up with her asking "a minute to put his history straight"
My lover she's waiting for me
Just across the bar
(He tell her about his LOVER (a woman for whom he fall perhaps because her beauty but who has nothing else to ofer))
My seats been taken by some sunglasses
Asking 'bout a scar
(He noticed she is with someone (who probably is taking advantage of her fragility))
And I know I gave it to you months ago
I know you're trying to forget
(He assume the guilt of her suffer and excuses her behaviour for trying with someone else)
But between the drinks and subtle things
The holes in my apologies
You know I'm trying hard to take it back
So if by the time the bar closes
And you feel like falling down
I'll carry you home
(He stress his intentions underlining another apology if forgetting something (because he is already drunk) and give sometime for her answer)
Tonight
We are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter
Than the sun [x2]
(He try to make her fell ok been cool about her new "friend" and give good expectations for they future together)
Now I know that I'm not
All that you got
I guess that I
I just thought maybe we could find new ways to fall apart
(He accept she got all to not be alone and pledges her consideration at this matter making it a small thing to put them apart)
But our friends are back
So let's raise a glass
Cause I found someone to carry me home
(Friends are back and the night must carry on)
Tonight
We are young
So let's the set the world on fire
We can burn brighter
Than the sun [x2]
Carry me home tonight
Just carry me home tonight
Carry me home tonight
Just carry me home tonight
(She accept him back)
The world is on my side
I have no reason to run
So will someone come and carry me home tonight
The angels never arrived
But I can hear the choir
So will someone come and carry me home
(Probably he explains to a friend (or been confrontated by her new guy - as the video suggest -) that they are or will soon be back together)
Tonight
We are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter
Than the sun [x2]
So if by the time the bar closes
And you feel like falling down
I'll carry you home tonight

I think it's about a girl who self harms, unless you've self harmed or been close to someone who self harms you wouldn't understand. When he mentions the scars I think he's reffering to her wrist (an abusive relationship would be bruises not scars) and when he says "I know I gave it to you months ago, I know your trying to forget" he probably hurt her feelings causing her to cut and of course she's tryig to move past it. The rest of the song makes since if you think of it like that
-
the song is about a man asking his ex to forgive him because he hit her, "My seats ben taken by some sunglasses askin about a scar, and i know i gave it to you mounths ago" this is the part that tells you the story of him giving her a scar.

she's pregnant

Now I'm terrible at understanding lyrics but this is what I think. The guy is really nervous and needs time to "get his story straight" because he is telling a girl that he gave her an std. He already has a lover across the bar and now because he left his lover to talk to this girl another guy took his place and is striking up a small talk conversation about scars ("My seat's been taken by some sunglasses asking bout a scar"). He gave the std to her months ago and now feels guilty because there is nothing either of them can do. . . BUT if she is way too overwhelmed by it all he'll carry her home. The chorus repersents every young person's attitude: reckless, daring, young, untouchable. Why not set the world on fire? Why not sleep around? Why not get drunk? We are young and unable to consider the consequences. Ok second verse: He realizes that he isn't the only one that needs to take care of her but guilt makes him want to "find new ways to fall apart." Then the friends come back so hey lets party cuz no matter what we can't change the std and we are young. So if by the time the bar closes (aka we grow up and face reality) and you feel like falling down (you are overwhelmed by what happened and hate life) I'll carry you home tonight.

I think the song is about a couple who are going through a rough time in their relationship. One day, they break up. One day, the boy goes to a bar. He sees the girl their. A man with sunglasses is sitting next to her. The boy gets angry and jealous. He wants her back. Later, the girl gets drunk and feels tired. The boy wants to carry her home. But, to win the girl's heart back, he'll have to prove that he's better than the man in the sunglasses.

This song they had to cut out the begining of the song because he talks about his relationship with a girl in which he use to beat. When he says "my seats been taken by some sunglasses asking 'bout a scar..." he means that a police officer is asking his EX about the scars that he gave to her. Also when he says "i know i gave it to you months ago.." he means that he beat her months ago. And when he says " i know your trying hard to forget" he LEGIT means that she is trying to forget what he has done to her.
