Incubus: Dig Meaning
Song Released: 2007
Dig Lyrics
But some of ours are easy to identify. Look me in the eye
And ask for forgiveness;
we'll make a pact to never speak that word again.
Yes, you are my friend.
We all have something that digs at us,
at least we dig...

I believe this song has a lot to do with love and self-hatred. The person singing is someone who hates himself, and he is singing to someone who has said they love him. His weakness is this self hate he has inside and there is conflict between him and the person he's singing to because that person's love reveals his weakness (a weakness he does not want to see. A weakness he runs away from). Hence the lines "ask for forgiveness" and "we'll make a pact to never speak that word again, yes, you are my friend."
His ego, which is in part fed by his determination to run away from his weakness, causes him to do things he feels guilty or ashamed about. So the singer creates this distinction between the person now who has done the guilty and shameful things and the innocent person from yesterday.
Alas:
"when weakness turns my ego up
I know you'll count on the me from yesterday."
"if I turn into another" (i.e, if he turns into someone other than the innocent one from yesterday)
The singer also asks the person to find the him from yesterday. To 'dig' up in a sense his exterior shell, his ego and defensive personality mechanisms that is hiding the him from yesterday. The idea of 'digging' is quite emotionally intense, because his ego and defensiveness obviously does everything it can to reject the person who is desperately trying to find him, because he wants to hide away from the fact that he is weak. Despite this, he makes a cry for that person to dig him up. There is a part inside him that is desperately asking to be loved and this is part of the song I find the saddest.
"dig me up from under what is covering
the better part of me. "
He wants to be assured, that despite his hostile behaviour and self hatred, that the person that loves him will always be there.. I guess in a sense it gives the singer some kind of hope that there is always a possibility that he can be loved.
"Remind me that we'll always have each other when everything else is gone." -
I'm pretty sure this song is about how people have a tendency to attack people when they themselves feel vulnerable. "When weakness turns my ego up" meaning becoming defensive and throwing something back to make yourself seem stronger when you are anything but. "We all have someone that digs at us" We all have someone that make us feel they are better than us and the line "at least we dig each other" Im pretty sure means two people equally trying to intimidate the other, not cheesy at all!

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

This song is about how sometimes people change for the worse, or do things that have bad consequences for themselves. The singer is asking someone that if that ever happens, to please bring him back from the bad place where he's gone, and to remind him that they'll always have each other and be there for each other.

This seems to be about people's ability to annoy each other. Especially the people closest to you, like your family and closest friends, know how to hurt you more than the average person does. It's like when you say that someone knows how to "push your buttons," or, in this song, "we all have something that digs at us." It's about people's ability to hurt each other, but in the end, we bring out "the better part of me" and forgive each other.
