John Mayer: In Your Atmosphere Meaning
In Your Atmosphere Lyrics
I don't think I'm gonna go to LA anymore
I don't know what its like to land and not race through
your door
I don't think I'm gonna go to LA anymore
I don't think I'm gonna go to LA anymore
I'm not sure...

1TOP RATED
#1 top rated interpretation:This song is pretty much about the pain in getting over someone. Basically, John dated a girl in LA, and used to visit her all the time. But now they have broken up, he doesn't know what he'd do if we ever went to LA since he was so used to going right to her when he got there or doing things with her there. Its like if you and your girlfriend/ boyfriend had a special place and then you guys break up, this song shows that feeling of pain and confusion and frustration of not being able to go to that place anymore because all it reminds you of is that person. For instance, now, he's just going to "steer clear" of LA, and "burn up in you're atmosphere" aka, keep his distance. Because if he did go to LA to see her, he'd die if he saw her, much like we all get that feeling that someone hit us with some plywood on our chest when we see our ex that has moved on. Yet, he'd be disappointed if he didn't see her there, because even if it hurts, he just wants to see her. I feel like this song is him wrestling with the thoughts of her of what he thinks of her and how he is going to get over her and such. I truly beautifully written song.
Lyrics
I don't think I'm gonna go to LA anymore
I don't think I'm gonna go to LA anymore
I don't know what it's like to land and not race to your door
But I don't think I'm gonna go to LA anymore
I don't think I'm gonna go to LA anymore
I'm not sure that I really ever could
Hold on to a hotel key
in your bedroom neighborhood
With me sleep walking in Hollywood
I'm gonna steer clear
Burn up in your atmosphere
I'm gonna steer clear
Cause I'd die if I saw you
I'd die if I didn't see you there
So I don't think I'm gonna go to LA anymore
I don't think I'm gonna go to LA anymore
Get lost on the boulevard at night
Without your voice to tell me
I love you, take a right
The ten and the two is a lonely sight
I'm gonna steer clear
Burn up in your atmosphere
I'm gonna steer clear
Cause I'd die if I saw you
I'd die if I didn't see you
I'm gonna steer clear
Burn up in your atmosphere
I'm gonna steer clear
Cause I'd die if I saw you
I'd die if I didn't see you there, see you there
I think I'm gonna stay gonna stay, gonna stay in the grey, think I'm gonna stay
All the street lights say nevermind nevermind
All the canyon lines say nevermind
Sunset says we see this all the time, nevermind never you mind -
The ten and the two part means the ten and the two positions of the steering wheel.

The ambivalence of lost love is something that truly can't be understood until you're in your "LA" wanting to pull up to their driveway, but also not, but also you do. The prospects to potentially rekindle is thrilling, but the potential for a definitive answer to an ended relationship can be heartbreaking as well.
Great song! -
Is the 10 and 2 reference referring to where the 10 freeway and the 2 freeway intersect in LA? That intersection is Santa Monica. Does the song reference actress he dated..."i watch your life play out in pictures from afar."
