The song quite simply is about the fear of people falsely convincing others that they are different than who they actually are, hence this goes along with the theme of the album about remembering and being who you are. Statements such as, "You're beautiful, so talented, I need you, we gotta thing." Are all things that people often say to one another but sometimes don't mean in order to gain one's trust, most commonly "You ever need something I'll be right there". The song talks about Jonathan's frustration with people who are fake that seem to be trustworthy but may or not be. Therefore this uncertainty is fearful for him as it is also fearful for many people. "Fear is a place to live", refers to being subjected to living in this fear of falsity, which one is forced to do during everyday human interaction and relationships. "Rip of the mask from you're head, show me the real face that you hide." Metaphorically refers to the exposure of a person's true identity. He wants the security of knowing if the people he meets or are associated with are fake or not, which is not often easy to determine. "Fake ass people surround me...they are always nice to begin but..." et cetera, is Jonathan's frustration intensified because of people that are fake, and once he discovers this it is too late, he has already invested too much into them and "gets fucked in the end."
