Gerard has said that it's about loss. The great thing is that somehow, Marc Webb had the intelligence to think of the one thing everyone has heard about, many have experienced, and was eaisly connected to the song (war) to base the video on.

The Ghost of You I think is another song about his Grandmother dying, just like Helena. It has very powerful lyrics and brings tears to my eyes everytime.
