   Ryan Tedder himself stated in several interviews that this song is about his own fear of flying due to some bad experience (which is NOT a good thing to suffer from when you are an international rock star and going on tour every few months!).
   
   He describes the feeling you get when you start wondering who would actually miss you if you died in an accident and sings of the strange relief when discovering that the person next to him - in this case his love - has to stand the same danger, being locked up in a tiny tin "40,000 feet off the ground".
   The chorus ("If I lose myself tonight, it will be by your side") speaks for itself, it says if he dies, his love will die with him.
   
   Btw I hope Ryan will live to be 100 to write and perform (their concert in Vienna was hilarious!) more songs as fabulous as this one ^^

   This song is supposed to describe the feeling of going down on a plane, I think. So you look beside you, and the love of your life is sitting there. Calm. And they are like a lifeline. Suddenly, you aren’t afraid.

   It means dying to yourself. Giving up your control. (everything you think you have control of is “washed out to sea.”)
   You give up your will and decide to follow God and His will.
   And letting go of the fear of losing that control. Holding onto your faith in trying times.( I can feel the light start to tremble)
   Persevering to the end with Christ.

   I watched the behind the scenes and Ryan says that it's about his fear of flying and waking up on a plant to realize its crashing, then panic, then looking next to you and realize that person is experiencing the same fear.
