Monster Lyrics

You were my conscience,
so solid
now you're like water
We stared drowning,
not like we'd sink any farther
But I let my heart go,
It's somewhere down at the bottom
But I'll get a new one,
And come back for the hope that you've stolen....

    Verse 1-
You were my conscience, so solid now you're like water
We stared drowning, not like we'd sink any farther
But I let my heart go, it's somewhere down at the bottom
But I'll get a new one, and come back for the hope that you've stolen.

I think this refers to Josh Farro and Zac Farro
Drums and guitar are sounds that are solid. But as it fades, like water ripples, it becomes soft and gone. hayley wanted them to stay, but now that her heart, 'the drums and guitar', she gotta replace her hope to carry on

    Chorus-
I'll stop the whole world, I'll stop the whole world from turning into a monster, and eating us alive
Don't you ever wonder how we survive?
Now that you're gone the world is ours.

Hayley was seen now as a monster, as the one causing the leaving of the band, she sees the world turning into a monster (something like I am Legend). Don't you wonder how we survive could refer to her message to the brothers that she is the one who got them on the band, and now they are gone, nothing can stop her.

    Verse 2-
I'm only human, I've got s skeleton in me
But I'm not the villain, despite what you're always preaching
Call me a traitor, I'm just collecting your victims
They're getting stronger, I hear them calling. (Calling, Calling)

Hayley is only human and she makes mistake. But she dont think she is the one at fault for the band breaking up due to their disagreement which includes some of the song lyrics which she and the brothers disagree on, as shown on http://joshnfarro.blogspot.com/2010/12/josh-and-zacs-exit-statement.html. But she also say no matter what happen, now they want her and is calling for her.

    Bridge-
Well you found your strength in solutions, but I like the tension
And not always knowing the answers, but you're gonna lose it, you're gonna lose it.

The brothers found strengths in their answers to hayley's disagreement and when they are arguing, she like the tension between them and not gonna regret no matter what. But she says that the brothers will lose their strength.

    This is my interpretation

This is my new favorite Paramore song. I can't stop listening to it. Here is what I think.

    Verse 1-
You were my conscience, so solid now you're like water
We stared drowning, not like we'd sink any farther
But I let my heart go, it's somewhere down at the bottom
But I'll get a new one, and come back for the hope that you've stolen.

I think this refers to Zac and Josh. Hayley and Josh dated for awhile so obviously they had a strong "solid" relationship with each other. But as the band progressed they became more distant and now the relationship is like water, unstable. The drowning part refers to the problems the band faced but since they've already gone through this like before "All We Know" was released, they can't "sink any farther". Letting her heart go refers to how bad she felt when the brothers left the band, but now Paramore will still put out more music, and get back the hope that Zac and Josh stole when they left.

    Chorus-
I'll stop the whole world, I'll stop the whole world from turning into a monster, and eating us alive
Don't you ever wonder how we survive?
Now that you're gone the world is ours.

I think the monster refers to all the critics and skeptics that talk down about Paramore and how the band was done since the Farro brothers left. By putting out new music, the band stops the world from criticizing them and saying they are nothing without the Farros or that the band is done. Also the Farros were repeatedly mentioned to not be having fun in the band anymore and Hayley, Taylor, and Jeremy were all for keeping the band going. So now that the Farros are out, they can do what they love with no restraints.

(Oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh)

    Verse 2-
I'm only human, I've got a skeleton in me
But I'm not the villain, despite what you're always preaching
Call me a traitor, I'm just collecting your victims
They're getting stronger, I hear them calling. (Calling, Calling)

This one is easy. The Farros said that Hayley was controlling the band and not including the others. So Hayley points out that she can make mistakes cause she's only human, and she's not the enemy despite what the Farros say. I think the victims the song talks about are the fans of Paramore. When the Farros left, all the reports said that Paramore was done and no longer a band. This left the fans as victims because they had no idea the split was coming, and now Hayley is collecting back the fans because Paramore is back. They are growing stronger and calling out because they are behind the band every step of the way.

    Bridge-
Well you found your strength in solutions, but I like the tension
And not always knowing the answers, but you're gonna lose it, you're gonna lose it.

According to Hayley, the Farros found their strength by coming to a solution to the problem they faced. They were unhappy with the band and they left. Hayley however likes the tension of leaving the problem unanswered. She likes the tension of not knowing what will happen to Paramore or the Farros.Paramore went out on a limb and released a new song without the Farros, not knowing what would happen, and the Farros will lose it because there will be no solution until the world decides if it likes the song.

That's just I think. GREAT song.

I agree with the religious interpretation, however slightly different than the previous. I see it as an anger at God for abandoning the world. That God used to give us hope and lead us to make right decisions, however as he has left the world, the world has fallen apart. She isn't evil for being human like she used to believe as human nature has faults, but she will still try and bring hope and positivity into the world, even though God left it behind.

Okay, So Here Is My Interpretation:

    You were my conscience,
    so solid
    now you're like water
(You were the best and most solid and strongest part of me, now you're just crumbling and unstable)
    And we started drowning
    Not like we'd sink
    Any further
(We'd get worse and and even though we have the same problems, we're falling apart over them)
But I Let my heart go
    It's somewhere
    Down at the bottom
(My true self got drowned and hurt, and now it's just ruined and crippled)
But I'll get a new one
    And come back
    For the hope that
    you've stolen
(You've made me lose my old self, so now I have to renew myself and wake up, and shed away all that's holding me back)

    I'll stop the whole world
    I'll stop the whole world
    From turning into a monster
    Eating us alive
(I need to stop my OWN world from eating me up and killing me inside)
    Don't you ever wonder
    How we
    Survived?
(Don't you ever wonder how we ever made it through with these setbacks and not even knowing they were there?)
    Well now that's you're gone
    The world
    Is ours
(Now that we did it, we can finally reclaim our lives)
    I'm only human
    I've got a
    Skeleton in me
(Remember I'm vunerable, and I'm no more or less than you are)
    But I'm not the villan
    Dispite what
    You're always preaching
(You think I'm the bad guy for breaking free and being "unloyal" to your pain, even though what you always say and think, twisting my religion in your way)
    Call me a traitor
    I'm just collecting
    Your victims
(You say I'm the traitor, I'm just picking up the pieces that you left behind, I'm only fixing the souls that you broke with your darkness)
    They're getting stronger
    I hear them calling
    Calling!!
(We finally got ourselves together and realized what's really happening)

    -Chorus-

When you find your strengh in solutions
(When you finally find your way, which is highly improbable)
    Well I like the tension
(Well I like seeing you realizing this and sinking, realizing what you've done)
And not always knowing the answers
(And not always knowing what to do and just reaching for a quick fix)
Well you're gonna loose it, you're gonna loose it
(You're gonna end up crazy and insane in this dark pit)

    -Chorus-

I really think this song is about the Farros, especially about Josh. Josh pretty much ruined it, dragging his brother bringing the crew only more pain. The tensions only made them separate and made them question their own Faith (crumbling church, music vdeo). As for the hospital, I think it means they just made the pain worse even after they tried healing (crumbling hospital). For the water, I think it means the thinking in and the isolation of each other, Hayley waking up and realizing what's happening to them.

So that's it. Sorry for any grammatical errors, I went really fast while typing this.

I think this song has a few meanings. One that I don't see many people saying is a possible religious interpretation. Religion is, after all, one of the reasons listed in Josh's excuse for leaving.

"You were my consience" - Jesus used to be her virtue, her rock.

"So solid, and now you're like water" - she used to be completely convicted in her faith, but she's not so sure anymore. Fame and fortune have started to get to her.

"But I let my heart go, it's somewhere down at the bottom" - she's stopped caring about the religious mumbo-jumbo and now just focuses on worldly things.

"But I'll get a new one and come back for the hope that you've stolen" - she'll take a new side, find a new cause, and regain that fire she once had about the Lord, if she can find it anywhere else. Perhaps She's blaming Him for leaving her, and now she feels abandoned and hopeless.

"I'll stop the whole world, I'll stop the whole world from turning into a monster and eating us alive" - she realizes that her mistakes have dragged her and her loved ones down, and now she has to fix it before it eats her alive.

"Don't you ever wonder how we survive?" - It's only through the blood of Christ that we have eternal life - surviving forever in heaven.

"Well now that you're gone, the world is ours." - now that her old ways are gone from her life, the world has opened up before her go begin anew.

"I'm only human, I've got a skeleton in me." - Okay, now, this is pretty big. Many conspiracy theories are out there about the music industry (as well as Hollywood, the government, etc.) and the people in it. Believe them or not, it doesn't really matter. This whole verse seems to be addressing those who believe in or fuel those theories. With this line, she's saying that yes, she is in fact a human, not a reptilian shapeshifter or a demon or whatever else people claim stars like her to be.

"But I'm not the villain, despite what you're always preaching." - people like Vigilant Citizen and others claim she is part of the Free Masons or Illuminati, the major "villains" in America. She's saying that she's not one of them, or at least not willingly. Hayley is aware of people claiming she's evil, and she's protesting.

"Call me a traitor" - many people, including former bandmate Josh Farro, have called her out on her straying from her faith and even belonging to the other side.

"I'm just collecting your victims" - she has reached, or has tried to reach, people religiously in crossover material - namely "We Are Broken" and "Let the Flames Begin." People she may have reached could possibly have been turned off from God in the past and having cried "victim."

"They're getting stronger; I hear them calling, (Calling) they're calling!" - Those people she's reached out to have grown in faith (I'm sort of going out on a limb with that).

"Well you found a strength in solutions, but I liked the tension in not always knowing the answers" - People always like to claim they have the definitive answer, especially when it comes to things like the question as to whether this guy or that chick is one of Them, but Hayley liked leaving room for possibility, because one can't really know the answers for sure. She might be trying to be ambiguous about whether she really is one of Them, or if They even exist.

"Well you're gonna lose it, you're gonna lose it" - Satan is going to lose, no matter what you believe, and she knows it.

Of course, one could always turn everything I just said around and make the Illuminati the good guys and God the monster in her eyes. I just like to be optimistic and believe she's turned it around for the better. But again, who knows.

Honestly, the song is most likely referring to the break-up of the band.

But I think it goes deeper than that; how Hayley is watching the world turn inwards on itself; how people are destroying the world. That's how I interpreted it anyway, but whatever. But I'm a person who believes that the human race is a fiend and should just die off, because we're terrible mistakes.

I do believe this is about Zac and Josh even though it was picked up for the transformer movie. people are under the assumption that the people in charge of the musical score for movies seek these bands out to do certain songs for said movie. true that is how it works some times it doesn't work like that all the time. i know of some artists even sending in their songs for movies that they know are in preproduction.

As far as to Mr. Tan I do think you need to check the band history more..... Hayley was originally just helping them write before she joined as the lead vocalist. So if anything Hayley was added last....not her adding Josh and Zac into the mix. The three of them were in separate bands before Paramore but were all friends. I think people would love to blame Josh and Zac for leaving. But in the end they had their own reasons and felt that it was the right thing to do.

Monster-because Paramore is a band that prefers to reach out to their fans and not talk about their own problems-is talking about, I think, that Hayley Williams would destroy the world rather than lose her love.

i love this song, it's basically paramore (hayley mostly) telling Josh that instead of Hayley letting it get to her head and becoming a glorified attentionwhore (like he basically called hayley out on in a blog "the preaching") she's found her head again (admitting that she lost it for a while there) and she's going to come up on top. the world is theirs.

"i'll stop the whole world from turning into a monster and eating us alive"
they won't give into the attention and fame like they did last time

even further (just a guess) i think the verse is addressed to Zac and the second && third is to Josh

I think the song is talking about how part of the band broke up and where is goes " i'm not the villain despite what your always preaching" and in part maybe they had an argument and the "i'll stop the whole world"
    maybe part of that :L
