The song is actually about a burglar who breaks into a house only to find it is haunted by numerous ghosts. He is trapped there for the rest of his life by the ghosts who tell him of their own lives when they were alive.

"Home by the Sea" is about a nursing homes, and the futility which the residents feel by being there.
