Pierce the Veil: Stay Away From My Friends Meaning
Stay Away From My Friends Lyrics
I've been inside your bedroom a thousand years.
And as you tie me to the bed for good I say
that I want you in the most unromantic way.
Louisiana, you're torturing me with a beautiful face.
Ana come...

#1 top rated interpretation:Most people believe that "Anna" is actually anorexia, but it could be just a girl.
I also think that he's literally talking to his razors.
"Waking up my neighbours downstairs"
Maybe attempted suicide, someone found him called and ambulance, it woke them up.
"I've been inside your bedroom a thousand years"
He's been cutting for a long time. The action of cutting being the actual bedroom.
"And as you tie me to the bed for good time's sake I say"
He keeps cutting, been cutting for a long time, hence the good time's sake. The razors tied him down for quite a while.
"I want you in the most unromantic way"
He shares a relationship with his razors, he wants them, but nowhere near in a romantic way, he just desperately depends on them. (he says unromantic because he starts to compare the relationship with his razors to the one with Louisiana)
Then he talks to "Louisiana" or "Anna", maybe she's trying to get him to stop or she's the reason he's trying to convince himself to stop. He shares some kind of emotional connection with her, be it love or anything else, the line:
"A penny in the couch and a diamond ring"
Could be how much she's worth to him/how much their relationship is worth to him/represents him being the penny in the couch (nearly worthless) while she's the diamond ring (rare, precious)/he's comparing her worth to cutting.
(This line really messes with my head) ^
From there, everything starts to click.
"Baby stay away from my friends"
He tells her to stay away from his friends who represent his razors.
"Cause I need them to carry me when this is over"
He needs his razors to keep him going once Louisiana leaves him (he counts on her to leave)
The count back from ten part is how he's literally counting down to the inevitable (her leaving him).
The next few lines:
"I don't know how you got into me..."
Is about how she stuck with him, she became something that he could rely on other than his razor blades.
The next few lines talk about how they weren't going to work out just as he predicted.
"Now you call me every christmas and my birthday"
Things are changing, they're not as in love anymore, the end of their relationship is coming.
"I can't believe how you look next to me, just like a strip club bedroom scene"
Maybe he doesn't mean it so literally, he could be trying to represent how different they both are from each other and that this was another warning sign.
"But you don't know what it's like
to wake up in the middle of the night,
scaring the thought of kissing razors
This blood evacuation is telling me to cave in"
He's trying his best to see how it could work, he's trying to convince himself that as long as he has her, he doesn't need the razors, but he knows that the amount of time he'll have her is questionable.
"Stay away"
He's struggling to stay away from his razors and he's telling her to stay away too (he's in a state of confusion of which one he should pick)
"Oh no"
He gives in to the razors.
"Just stay away from my friends"
He's finally convinced that he needs his razors more and tells her to stay away once again.
So basically, the song is an inner battle with himself over what's right and what's good for him. -

#2 top rated interpretation:Vic, the singer in this song, self harmed for a long time when he was younger. This song, although it may come across as a breakup song, is truly about him being so heartbroken and lost that he turned to a razor. Now that he has recovered, he wants his past to stay away from him and his ability to trust his friends. He doesn't want his past (AKA, Louisiana) to come back to haunt him. Vic is an amazing guy, but most of his songs have deep meanings despite what you may here.

I genuinely think this song is about self harm and even though it may seem like it’s about a relationship it may actually be about a relationship with razors and how there “friends” might be there razors and when the line “stay away from my friends” is given i think it may mean there trying to latch on or form a unhealthy relationship with self harm not allowing themselves any help and from what I heard “Ana” is a state of mind im not totally sure though. And the line “I don’t know how you got into me down my throat and made a home in my veins” probably means they are not sure how the relationship formed into a obsession I also think “ Louisiana” may be a important person that maybe tried to help but they slolwy came out of touch given the lyric “it used to be the rivers that would take us away but now you only call me every Christmas and my birthday” because of sloleu pushing her away with there relationship with self harming and the lyric “you don’t know what it’s like to wake up in the middle of the night scaring the thought of kissing razor” this is probably about there addiction or obsession with self harming and how they wake up every night craving it.
I resepect pierce the veil a ton as a band and this song absolutely shattered me it’s so emotional genuine
Vic is an amazing song writer and vocalist I don’t really know who this song is about (I’m guessing probably Vic but it isn’t my place to assume) but I hope whoever it was about has strayed away from self harming and is getting the help they need -
Whenever I hear the song, it screams to me about a toxic relationship. We depend on the people around us so much, but when they neglect and or abuse your relationship, it can be very dangerous. "As you tie me to the bed for good I say, that I want you in the most unromantic ways." The main character is tied down, and knows that the relationship they're in is no longer about love, but doesn't want to give up what little they have.
"You're torturing me with a beautiful face/I thought we had a d*mn good thing/how you look next to me like a strip club bedroom scene" All of these lines show how inadequate they feel in comparison to their partner. Not wanting to lose what they didn't think they deserved in the first place, they go with the actions their partner wants even getting used to it and wanting it to get at least some attention from their significant other.
"But you don't know what it's like, to wake up in the middle of the night, scaring the thought of kissing razors". This says that the other person obviously doesn't share the same troubles, isn't plagued with bouts of depressive thoughts or guilt that the relationship hadn't worked out like it should have. This line is also most obviously about self harm that they had lost the relationship even after trying everything they could to keep it.
"Stay away from my friends, cause I need them, to carry me when it's over I'll count back from ten and you can listen to glass hearts shattering". This says that they're going to need someone to lean on to stop the kissing razors and depressive thoughts. They'll count back from ten to calm themselves down, to not 'make a scene' or something like that while they're heart breaks again and again for the same cause.
I tried to view this with as neutral as a perspective as possible, but I do love Pierce the Veil and the songs they write. This is just how I view the song :) -
It’s about a breakup that Vic had and the girl tried to keep in close contact with Vic’s friends. This obviously upset him. He was already heartbroken from the breakup and this was just adding onto it. I think everyone is misunderstanding the self harm aspect of the song. He never implies he’s doing it, but rather he is not in a good place in his life at the time and was contemplating harming himself and that the situation with the girl texting and calling his friends was “telling” him to cave in to hurting himself. This makes more sense, knowing Vic used to when he was younger and now he’s just pondering it after a tough heartbreak.

WORDS FROM VIC:
This is about my ex-girlfriend trying to stay in close contact with my friends even after we had broken up. We all need our friends to be there for us and help us out during hard times. I wrote the piano parts in my living room at home in San Diego. We wanted to challenge ourselves with this song and make it as different as possible from the rest of the album. We threw it right in the middle of the album as a sort of a breath of fresh air. My friend Dave Yaden played all the keys on this record, as well as on [2007’s A Flair For The Dramatic], and that took everything to the next level -
I think that this is a about depression, self harm, and all those mental illnesses. This is one of my favorite songs because I myself go through depression and self harm. "Waking up your neighbors downstairs..." To me that part is talking about how some people just wake up in the middle of the night screaming or crying and they wake up their neighbors or something like that. "Ana come on I thought we had a damn good thing" probably is about many people that go through Anorexia and fall into depression. "that I want you in the most unromantic way." I think this means that even though we hate depression and pain , when were not feeling it for a while we start to miss it. "so baby stay away from my friends cause wi need them to carry me when its over." I think this part means that depression needs to stay away from his friends cause he needs them to carry him when he's dead maybe or just so that they can help him get through depression. "when its over I'll count back from ten and you can listen to glass hearts shatter." I think this means that depression at the end will get to listen to all the people that loved him crying cause he died. "Idk how you got into me down my throat and made a home in my veins" and I think this means that depression got to him and he didn't realize it til now and it made a home inside him and it'll never leave. "but you don't what its like to wake up in the middle of the might scaring the thought of kissing razors." Obviously this is about self harm because he used to self harm when he was younger just like most of his fans.

To me, the meaning isn't exactly what the song is supposed to mean but this is how /I/ look at it.
I suffer from self harm and I don't like admitting/accepting it but I do. I don't want help or anyone to find out or worry but a few people have found out and tried helping me. my best friend found my blades one day and took them without me knowing until she left my house later and told me. so the lines, " So baby stay away from my friends. When it's over i'll count back from Ten and you can listen to glass hearts shattering" to me means i don't want anybody taking my blades(friends), not that i would call the items 'friends' but you know, but its all i have when i need someone. its all i can really do and i don't want people taking that away from me. i have tried to stop and each time i relapse my heart shatters because i know i ruined myself once again.
I've also overdosed on pills a quite few times. The lines "I don't know how you got into me. down my throat, and made a home in my veins. they used to do the rivers that would take us away, but now you only call me every Christmas and my birthday" to me mean that gradually, my self destructive rampage got worse and led to pills. Slowly but also suddenly, they came into my life. they went down my throat and almost always, after the intake i would cut hence the 'made a home in my veins' part.I don't overdose very much anymore but once in a while i do and that's what the 'but now you only call me every Christmas and my birthday' because there are those /special/ times in which i want to feel numb but then throw up violently. when i can take myself anymore.
Like i said, I don't want anybody finding out about it but a few have and like i said before i don't want them to help me because i feel as if that's all i have and i don't need help. so the lines, "You don't know what it's like, to wake up in the middle of the night. scaring the thought of kissing razors. this blood evacuation is telling me to cave in. so stay away" means that they don't know how /hard/ it is to stop. they don't know that its hard to 'find another outlet'. that its hard not to cave in and when i do it hurts me mire than it will ever hurt them but that i don't want them to take them(the blades) away because i keep them for protection. so when i do want to relapse once more it won't be as bad if i have them there with me than it would be it i had to find them once again because i feel like its a new start. like if i have to get used to them which always ends up worse. so when it says "Stay away" it means stay away from them. don't try 'helping' me because i don't need it.
Although I know this isn't what they meant the song to be, its how I see it . -
I think this song is about all mental illnesses haunting him and how he wanted them to stay away from him and how they broke people. Ana is Anorexia and "the thought of kissing razors" refers to self harm/cutting. I think when Vic says "you can listen the glass hearts shattering" it refers to having his heart broken and turning to a blade or how SH broke him.
-
I think this song might be about a failed relationship and how Vic turns to self harm to deal with everything. I think maybe the title "Stay away from my friends" has to do with her lingering, making it hard to get over her. Perhaps, Ana refers to Anorexia and "the thought of kissing razors" is cutting.
-
At first I thought it was about a girlfriend that was trying to get with his friends after they were over. Now i think its about self harm. Its kind of a mystery.
-
It's about all the different disorders Anna is anorexia it's about all the struggles and telling them to not take over his friends like they took over him
-
Vic(the lead singer said this was about a break up. He's ex tried to stay in close contact with his friends. He needed his friends to be there for him so he could get over her. He does talk a lot about self harm in this song, that is because Vic did self harm a lot in the past.
-
I personally think it has nothing to do with a girl at all. I read somewhere that it did, I'm not sure. I think it's about depression and cutting. You can relate a lot of the lyrics into self harm.
-
Although I agree that the singer could be talking about depression or something of the sort, in my opinion it's more about the singer's self-consciousness, in a way. I think that the singer is deeply unhappy (you can practically hear the pain in his voice) and settles for girls that he doesn't care much about. Although he thinks they're fine for him, he believes that his friends are too good for the girls that he dates and sleeps with. He can't stand himself for it.
-
I'm not sure entirely what this song means...To me it's kind of a story of a relationship that went sour because of something he did...unintentionally ended up hurting himself by losing her. Now he needs his friends.
