Pierce the Veil: Yeah Boy And Doll Face Meaning
Song Released: 2008
Yeah Boy And Doll Face Lyrics
"I could never leave your bed",
Wake me up and let me know you're alive
And will you fall in love again?
Is the scent slowly spreading?
I've been answering machines all night
And are the doctors dancing...

#1 top rated interpretation:I think the song is about a girl who cheated on her boyfriend, and the boy tries to get along without her, but he still loves her and decides that he can't live without her and tries to commit suicide. The first verse:
"Were you honest when you said,
'I could never leave your bed',
Wake me up and let me know you're alive
And will you fall in love again?
Is the scent slowly spreading?
I've been answering machines all night"
is indicating that he's suspecting that she's being unfaithful because she comes home late therefore he needs her to wake him when she does come home so he knows she's okay. And when he calls her, she never answers. Then when the song says:
"And are the doctors dancing in
While the ambulances sing?
Another boy without a sharper knife..."
that's when he tries to commits suicide but the doctors got there in time to save him. Then the chorus says:
" The moment that's where I
Kill the conversation, wrap this up
With a knife that loves to feel
How do you know how deep to go before it's real?"
which suggests self harm and finally having enough. The next verse is:
"Can I even complicate your breathing?
I guess I'm just your average boy
This is me with a knife in the back
And a grip on the grass
It's cold and I don't want to be here
I guess I'm never comfortable or situational"
which is him questioning if she ever even loved him at all. Then blatantly says that she stabbed him in the back by lying to him. It also mentions how he decided he no longer wanted to be a part of the relationship because she broke his heart. Then the song says:
"Are we losing or beginning
To try a new life without you?"
is saying that he's trying to start a new life without her, but he's not sure if it's the right choice. The chorus repeats, but changes a little bit and says:
"The moment that's where I
Kill the conversation, wrap this up
With a lie that I'm enjoying every minute with myself
And she could make hell feel just like home
So I'm never leaving her alone
But if your lightning lips aren't mine
Then I don't know the awkward stranger to my right
(But she's crying)"
which now is saying that he's not happy being by himself because she made him happy and made the hard times easy. But then he points out that if he's not the only guy that she's kissing/sleeping with then he can't be with her, and he's also saying that she's not the person he thought she was which is just another reason not to be with her. Then he mentions that she was crying which makes him think that maybe she might have had feelings for him. He continues saying:
"I only need one hand to drive
When you're with me
You are my getaway
Oh, no!"
which is him saying again that she made his life easier and she made him feel like nothing else mattered. Lastly, the song ends with this:
"And don't you ever feel alone? And don't you wish you were home?
Cut the lust tonight; all right, all right
Tell me why my little Mona Lisa told a lie, lie, lie, lie
Do you want me? Do you want to let me know that you're okay?
A diamond gold ring customized to cut your circulation
But I couldn't let you go; no, I'd never let you go my dear
So keep talking 'cause I love to hear your voice
Voice again"
which at first is him asking her if she misses him too and if she does all she has to do is "cut the lust tonight" or stop sleeping with other guys. And he also feels like he needs closure, as in he needs to know why she cheated on him. He then continues to wonder if she's purposely trying to let him know that she is doing fine without him while he can't live without her. The song also indicates that while he's still miserable, she's getting married. And the song ends with him just saying that he will never let her go and would never get over her. The song is a little backwards, but all of this was what led up to the suicide attempt in the begging. -

#2 top rated interpretation:This song is actually about a male fan.
The fan was driving to a PTV concert with a girl.
They were in a car accident, and the boy blacked out. He awoke when the ambulance arrivied, and he simply asked "Is she okay?" The paramedics were confused, and asked who he meant, to which he said "The girl that was with me."
They simply replied "what girl."
The boy met Vic, and he told him this story. Vic then wrote this song about them.
(Vic said this in an interview when asked about this song) -

#3 top rated interpretation:Well, in the music video they were in a car crash and vic had blacked out, and the girl looked very worried. Maybe the song actually means the reverse? A boy and a girl got in a car crash and the girl went into a coma. Maybe just before she blacked out into the coma she told him everything would be alright, or that she'd never leave, hence why he said "Why did my Mona Lisa tell a lie?" I suppose the rest would talk about how he has stayed by her hospital bed nonstop and then she may have possibly died, hence why the doctors "danced in." After that he may have tried to kill himself from the grief, just to feel something again, maybe join her. I'm just guessing, though.
-
vic said in a livestream is that the actual meaning behind this song is that he was ghosted really bad by a girl, so she thought that she was dead.

So I'm thinking that the knife mentioned several times throughout the song represents good old fashioned deceit. "With a knife in the back & a grip on the grass, it's cold and I don't wanna be here". The songs inspiration was derived from a real happening to a PTV fan on his way to a PTV show accompanied by his girlfriend and them getting into a car accident on the way to said show. Unfortunately, dudes girlfriend bailed before the ambulance even arrived while dude was unconscious. So the song is a representation of how it might have felt in that particular situation and the insecurities that might have come along with the experience. Like how he gaslights himself in the the song with "I guess I'm never comfortable or situational" while at the same time putting blame on himself.
"Were you honest when you said I could never leave your bed?" Could refer to a moment that happened previous to the predicament that would define the depth of the relationship and the foundation of the feelings he thought they shared for each other. "Wake me up and let me know you're alive" would fit in a literal sense like 'could have at least woken me up to let me know you were alive before bailing, yo'
"Will you fall in love again?"- the doubt of ever seeing her again leaves this question naturally.
"Is the scent slowly spreading" - I think this might refer to the rise in the ghosting trend among relationships? But idk.
"I've been answering machines all night"- might refer to the machines dude was hooked up to after the accident.
"Are the doctors dancing in, as the ambulances sing another boy without a sharper knife" - because dull knives hurt more and do more damage. & The ambulances singing to him also relates back to the answering machines all night...which makes sense if he's suffered head trauma. So the song is how it must have felt what the things that he must have thought being in that situation but from the perspective of Vic or the band. It's empathy that allows us to walk in other people's shoes and understand what something must have felt like and to imagine the details as if their really happening. It's genius honestly. So cool.

"Were you honest when you said,
"I could never leave your bed",
Wake me up and let me know you're alive"
And will you fall in love again?
Is the scent slowly spreading?
I've been answering machines all night
a guy is in the hospital, and his girlfriend says she'll never leave him. he questions if she is being honest, and if she'll fall in love with someone else after he leaves the hospital.
"And are the doctors dancing in
While the ambulances sing?
Another boy without a sharper knife..."
he tried to kill himself by cutting, but failed and is in the hospital for it.
"The moment that's where I
Kill the conversation, wrap this up
With a knife that loves to feel
How do you know how deep to go before it's real?"
he is referring to when he found out his girlfriend was cheating on him, and started cutting. he's wondering how deep he has to cut to kill himself, because he still loves her
"(Take me home)
Can I even complicate your breathing?
I guess I'm just your average boy
This is me with a knife in the back
And a grip on the grass
It's cold and I don't want to be here"
he starts to think she's too good for him, and he's just average. he felt stabbed in the back, and doesn't want to be alive anymore.
"I guess I'm never comfortable or situational
Are we losing or beginning
To try a new life without you?"
he thinks that he shouldn't leave her, even after what she did to him.
"The moment that's where I
Kill the conversation, wrap this up
With a lie that I'm enjoying every minute with myself
And she could make hell feel just like home
So I'm never leaving her alone
But if your lightning lips aren't mine
Then I don't know the awkward stranger to my right
(But she's crying)"
the guy is debating if he wants to leave her. he tries to pretend he's enjoying being with out her, but realizes she makes him feel better, and doesn't want to leave her. but if she keeps cheating on him, she'll become a stranger. he sees that she's crying because he attempted suicide, and thinks she still loves him
"I only need one hand to drive
When you're with me
You are my getaway
Oh, no!"
he doesn't think he could live without her but knows he has to
"And don't you ever feel alone? And don't you wish you were home?
Cut the lust tonight; all right, all right
Tell me why my little Mona Lisa told a lie, lie, lie, lie
Do you want me? Do you want to let me know that you're okay?"
he's asking her if she misses him, and why she lied to him. she still wants to be with him, and he told her to cut the lust and not cheat on her again.
"A diamond gold ring customized to cut your circulation
But I couldn't let you go; no, I'd never let you go my dear
So keep talking 'cause I love to hear your voice
(Love to hear your voice, love to hear your...)
Voice again"
even after what she did, he still wants to be with her forever and marry her. he could never let her go, and just wants them to be together again. -
I've thought about the meaning to my favorite song for a longgggg time and I'm pretty sure something happens to him or her(well, obviously) "now the doctors dancing in" they were at the hospital "another boy without a sharper knife" i think he tired to kill himself at this part and he wasn't able to. "Where you honestly when you said, I could neved leave your bed" I think it meant hospital bed. "Kill this love with a knife that loves to feel - how do you know how deep to go before its real" how does he know to do it or not If she's not there to tell him. "To try a new life without you" I defiantly think he is killing himself, at this last part too. "so keep talking cus I love to hear your voice" it's possible she killed him or she tried to save him
-
It's about a boy, who was in love with a girl and she left him. And he couldn't stand life without her so he tried to kill himself by cutting ("how deep to go before it's real") but is saved my doctors.
-
I think that this song means that a girl that he was deeply in love with left him or something. Then he self harms, and possibly tried to commit suicide. He mentions knives alot and he says"Wrap this up with a knife that loves to feel
How do you know how deep to go before it's real." as in how does he know how deep to cut before he can die. Thats what i think. Many Many possibilitys. -
well............. i relate to Vic's position in the offical music video. my accident happened EXACTLY.........well almost exactly like that. i was in a coma for months afterwards.......*
Were you honest when you said,
"I could never leave your bed",
Wake me up and let me know you're alive
And will you fall in love again?
Is the scent slowly spreading?
I've been answering machines all night
And are the doctors dancing...While the ambulances sing
*
But the rest? is much like a slow tango with a knife.
*
Another boy without a sharper knife
The moment, that's where I
Kill the conversation
Wrap this up
With a knife that loves to feel
How do you know how deep to go before it's real
Take me home
Can I even complicate your breathing
I guess I'm just your average boy
This is me*
I feel like its a suicide note in a song.It fits my life and tangos.............. a boyfriend who says he loves but really isnt loving.
*
With a lie that I'm enjoying every minute with myself
And she could make hell feel just like home
So I'm never leaving her alone
But if your lightning lips aren't mine
Then I don't know the awkward stranger to my right
But she's crying
I only need one hand to drive
When you're with me
You are my getaway
Oh no
And don't you ever feel alone
And don't you wish you were home
Cut the lust tonight
Alright, alright tell me why my
Little Mona Lisa told a lie
Do you want me
Do you want to let me know that you're OK
*
Its a story about a life struggling to continue living without knowing if thier love is still breathing and thinking, and in one piece. -
I feel that the songs about him loving a girl and she doesn't love him back, and he's wondering if sympathy would win her back, but the only trouble is to gain the sympathy, he's planning to commit suicide. He keeps referring back to memories as in "she could make hell feel just like home" as in she made the worst of situations feel warm and comfortable.
I feel that there are many meanings to this song and that its been created to give mixed opinions and that your the only one who can decide on a story, its open to anything. Thats what music is about! To be able to write a song which opens up views on feelings and emotions.
