Sara Bareilles: Breathe Again Meaning
Breathe Again Lyrics
Bags are packed
But what kind of heart doesn't look back?
At the comfortable glow from the porch
The one i will still call yours
All those words came undone
And now i'm not the only one
Facing the ghosts that decide
If the...

It's about a relationship she had with a cluster B type personality disorder, probably narcisstic personality disorder. No closure. No breath, because he was her all.

This song is beautifully complicated. Fits into my world of leaving an abusive marriage. Leaving the person I committed to love and loved so deeply in the midst of the abuse. Years invested but had to leave for the chance of a better, abuse-free life-for the chance to breath again.

This song is so beautifully complicated. Like some others have said, I think that it is about a love that she’s known for a very long time. (Husband) She knows that she is loved by him, and she’s comfortable, yet not fulfilled. She’s found a new, passionate love with someone else (Lover) but is torn between what she knows and what she knows that she could have. I hear a contrast.
“All I have” (husband)
-versus-
”All I need” (lover).
“He is the air that I’d kill to breathe” (lover).
“Holds my love in his hands” (husband). “Still I’m searching for something” (lover)
Ect..back and forth, just like she feels pulled back and forth between her love for the two of them.
“Open up next to you and my secrets become your truth” is about the lover knowing that he is the “other man” and her secret is now who he has become. The most gut wrenching part of the song is “it hurts to be here”. Here...in this situation. You can feel the agony in that verse. -
I think the song has to do with a deeper meaning of what love really is...in the depths of our soul is a great need to be truly loved and accepted for who we are...and our purpose....in Life...which brings me to a greater source of real eternal love....God...that love can only be met by Him first....Sara said she wrote the song was she was depressed.....when we accept God's love we are free to truly love.....God and others and ourselves....breathing again....is experiencing real love in God...

It is about how she is in a relationship with a man who is great. However there is something that is missing. It almost seems to me like she herself is going through something independent of him. Like maybe she is confused with what love is or how to keep it. So she self destructs and cheats on him and confesses. "Open up next to you and my secrets become your truth" aka she comes clean and his world is shattered. This is now his truth. It could also mean that she confessed and he also confessed to cheating on her, so their truths are now one in the same. Now she has to leave a love that she didn't know was so important to her til she ruined it all.

I think this is about a girl who loves someone.. but that someone loves her too much that it is too much for her. She feels like shes being suffocated with that love. She decides she leaves the relationship but she is also hurting at some point. Now she wonders if she can love again.

His love isn't enough to fulfill her. She knows she's loved, but there's something out there that is pulling her away and leaving him is a sacrifice she's willing to make even though it's painful. When I listen to to this song I'm left wondering what she finds, and if she found it does she goes back? Maybe she goes back and he's moved on, and she's faced with the reality of what she sacrificed. Ultimately, the question is, does she learn to breath again?
I came across this song during a time of transition very similar to the circumstances in the lyrics. It'll be my go-to when I'm searching for a little validation that I made the right decision. -
"Out of breath I am left hoping someday, I'll breathe again": in this line, she is referring to how she was left heartbroken & she wonders if she will ever find true love again. She tells us about her past & how she was left "out of breath".
-
It's fundamentally about moving on...
She's remembering all the happy moments they had together, but perhaps the relationship had become too 'comfortable' and now she is searching for something more. Something more in life that will once again ignite the fire inside her.. The breaking up of the relationship hurts her nonetheless but in the end she knows she will eventually get past it and 'breathe again'.
