Staind: It's Been Awhile Meaning
Song Released: 2001
It's Been Awhile Lyrics
Since I could hold my head up high
And it's been awhile
Since I first saw you
And it's been awhile
Since I could stand on my own two feet again
And it's been awhile
Since I could call you
And everything I can't...

Well my boyfriend and I discussed this song yesterday when we heard it on the radio! I have always heard this song as a battle with addiction and trying to get passed it! My boyfriend SWEARS its about a passed love who he wishes he wouldnt have messed thigs up with! Heres whats weird I've never struggled with drugs never even tried them once and I think its about drugs my boyfriend did Coke for years and he thinks its about love. I still stand by its about drugs. I think its hidden to sound like a love song. Like most songs about addiction!!! Its just very clever lyrics!!! i love the song regardless!!
-
i think we are all right....that is why music is an art....we can interpret it in our own minds.
-
It's about struggling with relapse and a relationship. He's talking about both of them in the song and how it's "been awhile" since hes been clean of drugs and since he's been truly happy. So he's apologizing to the girl and saying how he knows he messed up
-
I think this song is about pride and forgiveness. He knows he messed up and it's been awhile since he could feel pride and depend on himself,he blames himself for all mistakes and he wants a second chance.
-
Some people got this right. It has nothing to do about women. Its a metaphorical song about drug abuse.
-
This song is about his addiction and his struggle to stay sober.
-
i honestly think this song is all about regret... or losing your best friend, this song got dedicated to me on my birthday... i kinda get it now
-
This is a song about a man that lost his relationship due too drug abuse and now sober is taking personal responsibility for fucking up his relationship and wants to let her know he is sorry for all he has caused now that he is better and wants to let her know it was all his fault. He was sick and now better wants to apologize.
Story of my life -
This particular song is not about a girl in any way! It is about somebody who has made me many mistakes And has always "fix" them in a negative way. For a long time He has attempted to stay clean from drugs and continually relapses . Finally he leaves his demons And is on the right path. Now he is dealing with lifes trials and tribulations clean and sober & feeling all the emotional pain. He can still remember how it feels to numb his pain. The candles = the flame that cooks his smack ( smoking meth & the taste???) Basically it is about a man's road through addiction and sobriety finally conquering the "evil gremlins " yet still has mixed feelings and emotions with how many years of drug use. Coming from an ex addict I have to admit they were not all bad times But these times were not worth The price you had to pay for admission!
-
come on now... the candle lights your face....i can still remember just the way you taste. if you have ever used intervenes drugs it will be very clear.

Song is about using & battling heroin addiction, the destruction guilt and shame it causes in all areas of life, Unless you have been there (and you DONT want to) you wont know what he is saying.
Anyone agree????
Check out Alice in Chains - NUTSHELL, Staind also done a cover of this. -
So agree with the heroin interpretation. There's also the reference to I cannot blame this on my father. I cannot look at myself straight. Talking about the shame that accompanies addiction to drugs like heroin, and the tendency for addicts to blame their addiction on other, particularly their parents. Hello. Anyone who has ever struggled with addiction feels this song to their core.
-
Your all crazy if you don't think this song is about heroin addiction. For the guy who mentioned him buying pot I won't even comment. You can interpret it how you feel but if you fully disect the song it's about his struggles battling relapse.
-
Love can certainly be an addiction too. Thats what he's addicted to. He misses the feeling of love. He feels self pity for fucking up this past relationship. He wants to feel loved again. He feels he can't stand up by himself w/o her. But in the end every single thing he's ever done wrong in his life disappears from his mind when he's around her.

i am one of stainds biggest fans. I would have to say it means exactly what it says. Its been awhile since i could hold my head up high. He is depressed with low self esteem or misses something that used to make him happy! Thats y he is holding his head down. Its been awhile since i could say that i wasnt addicted...he is apparently addicted to something and its been a long time since he could say he wasnt an addict. Only Aaron knows what that is he is addicted to. Being a HUGE fan i know he loves his Pot. 500 dollar a week habit is what he has. The words pretty much tell ya everything
