Saying goodbye is death by a thousand...
-
It's about struggling with a breakup clearly and trying to overcome it by drinking and such.
I think it references Paper Rings. "I'd marry you with paper rings" -> "papercut stains from our paper thin plans"
-
I feel like she is having trouble saying goodby so, she would rather die than say goodbye to her loved ones
-
I think the song is about Taylor not being able to get over or recover from loosing someone she cared too much about. Throughout the song she makes it obvious that she still loves this person very much and almost can’t let go of what they had. The lyrics “I get drunk but it’s not enough cause the morning comes and you’re not my baby.” Make it clear that she wants this person back and is trying anything to forget about them or come to terms with loosing them or pretend they are still there, but unfortunately it doesn’t work.

"Saying goodbye is Death by a thousand cuts" means that she is having trouble saying goodbye to something. "You say this is a great love, one for the ages. But if the stories over, why am I still writing pages?" Means that she probably thought that this was going to be the one to go down in history, but she is confused that why they still are in a relationship after they broke up. "...I ask the traffic lights if it will be alright, they say I don't know." Meaning that she is trying to rekindle the relationship, but this time she is taking it slow avoiding what other people say like if it is good running across that red light or slowing down at a green light.
