It's about getting old and watching the children play. Doing things I use to do they they think are new. I set and watch as tears go by.

I always thought the song was about missing a lost love and the mention of children was somehow bringing up those memories and only incidental to the larger meaning of the song

it's sad. But at the same time is a happy song.
