The Weeknd: Hardest To Love Meaning
Song Released: 2020
Hardest To Love Lyrics
Uh yeah
Yeah
You try with me so many times, yeah
You're cryin' out behind the smiles
And I can see right through the lies
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
And what we had is dead inside, yeah
You're actin' like it's still alive
And you...

i am personally a huge fan of the weeknd and this song really stuck out to me on the album. to me, this song represents how the weeknd feels he is ultimately “the hardest to love”- feels undeserving of love bcs of previous experiences or low self esteem. his anonymous lover has “acting like it’s still alive”- she wants this relationship and wants to show him his worth yet then weeknd believes it’s better for them to go on there separate paths. he expresses “together we are so alone” expressing his concern that they are together just so they can say that they are “in love” like it’s duty to be in a relationship nowadays. “i can’t believe you want me after all the heartbreaks, after all i’ve done” meaning he has drained her by his constant need for reassurance or that he has made a huge mistake yet she has still forgiven him. there are two ways to look at the song, either that he feels unloveable due to his past relationships or that he feels undeserving of love as he has heavily mistreated his lover but she still forgives him (he doesn’t understand why.)
