To me it seems to represent being stuck in a rut. You get used to the chaos and abuse and it becomes comfortable, yet draining and depressing.
After a while, making change, however tough, is possible. There is a major adjustment period, and in a certain way we miss the old life.
It seems like a Carpe Diem sort of situation.
