AJR: Birthday Party Meaning
Song Released: 2019
Birthday Party Lyrics
A minute ago, I did not exist
It's nice to finally meet my relatives
I bet it's always gonna stay this fun
I bet it's easy staying 'way from drugs
I bet our parents always stay in love
Always stay in...

#1 top rated interpretation:Birthday Party, in my opinion, is about the lose of childish innocence and bliss. The AJR brothers have posted on their social media that people need to stop telling them to stay away from politics, likely specifically referring to Birthday Party and the Neotheater album as a whole. Lyrics like “I bet my country’s nice to immigrants”, “I bet I’ll live to see a female president”, and “I hope my ignorance is alway bliss, ‘cept ignoring pigment in our skin” clearly refer to immigration policies, sexism, and racism. As the narrator loses their childhood, along with it, their blissful ignorance also disappears. As the song gets near to the end, Jack, the singer, seems increasingly sarcastic, especially on the last line: “Yeah, I can tell this life will be a cinch. And that’s just how it is.” AJR often focuses on growing up, but this is definitely their most in-depth politically song on the topic.

2TOP RATED
#2 top rated interpretation:AJR's interpretation of how the world seems to kids. Children see people as equals, and its only the influence of the world and their bringing up that makes these inequalities reality.
