Avenged Sevenfold: Bat Country Meaning

Album cover for Bat Country album cover

Song Released: 2005

Bat Country Lyrics

"He who makes a beast out of himself, gets rid of the pain of being a man"

Caught here in a fiery blaze, won't lose my will to stay.
I tri-i-i-ied to drive all through the night,
the heat stroke ridden weather, the barren empty sights.
No...

youre all dickheads... this freakin' song means being a beast, abandons being a man... not abandons the bad thing about man... so it means to be a beast, you leave the good things of being a man...

My interpretation is peculiar compared to the other conclusions out there. Without reading up on Dr. Johnson, I seiously listened to the lyrics a numerous amount of times. Obviouslsy it uses Dr. Johnson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" but there is a Jimmy Sullivan twist on it, more noticable in the last verse of the song. Jimmy, (A.K.A The Rev), always said he was sure of two things, one of them being he wasn't going to live past thirty, as quoted by M. Shadows. Now, in the last verse of this song it states, "All these good ideas will tear your brain apart...I'm to wierd to live but much to rare to die." My thoughts are, Jimmy was calling out, or letting his listeners know that he was bound to die as a result of his genius, simliar to a Stephen Hawking complex. But, this is just my take on the song, feel free to verbally abuse me Via the internet.

OK with music it is bad to try and find underlining themes and shit because every ones gonna find something different from the last interpretation. But it is definitely about H.S.T. and his work. (Fear and loathing in Las Vegas) Although the quote does originally come from Dr. Johnson as pointed out in the video, Thompson did use it in the book and it was in the beginning I the movie I believe. AVENGED SEVENFOLD IS NOT SATANIC, YOU DUMB FUCK! And the vampire thing. Its good that you found evidence that can slightly be related to vampires. But they are sadly wrong. The things you have pointed out are related to Las Vegas, them getting wasted and them being completely high, stripping balls and freaking the fuck out. So I if you read this think about what I said and you will hopefully get what I'm saying.

I'm so sick of people being obssessed with vampires atm, why would Avenged Sevenfold write a song about vampires?! But yeah, as all the sane and non-retarded people have pointed out, the video is highly based on Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas (which is an amazing film btw.) so yeah. stfu, vampire fanatics. no one cares about vampires anymore.

Okay, first of all... the guy who said A7X is satanic is a comlete moron.. Not all songs have to be about your idiotic religions.
secondly, i don't care whether its about drugs, or if its about vampires... although i like the vampire interpretation better because i'm GOTH!!!
Why can't you just enjoy the song?? Doing all this interpretation takes the fun out of the song. DON'T BE SO ANALYTICAL!!

The opening line is not Hunter S. Thompson, it's Samuel Johnson. Thompson was quoting Samuel Johnson, an English poet and writer of the 1800's. If Hunter S. Thompson is given credit in the CD booklet of this album for saying, "He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man," then Avenged Sevenfold is even dumber than I thought and only furthers my belief that they are a shite band.

The dude who said avenged sevenfold is satanic is so far off it isn't even funny, it IS about Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and that's that.

The line "He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man." actually refers to the use of drugs to stave off depression. It's a reference to how man "uses" to get away from his feelings and emotions.

Right - the quote "He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man" is a Samuel Johnson quote.

I imagine Avenged Sevenfold took the quote from HST's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas; in my copy, the quote stands alone on a page following the 'thank you' page.

    Take care,

I hate this band. If their music wasn't so republican it would be good though. These people should know better than to preach about outdated morality.

Its a song about transformation. Pretty much, their mostly talking about drugs and the effect on the human mind, the song was also sort of based off of the movie "fear and loathing in los vegas." the specific scene was when the two guys were sitting in a car, and they were extreamly high, and they were driving, and one of them thought they were being attacked by bats.

Um to the guy that was going on the tangent about how gay vampires are I agree with you but a hemophiliac is someone whose blood does not coagulate correctly not someone who is sexually aroused by blood
