Song Released: 2008
Dear God Lyrics
Miles away from those I love
Purpose hard to find
While I recall all the words you spoke to me
Can't help but wish that I was there
Back where I'd love to be, oh yeah
Dear God the only...

#2 top rated interpretation:This song is pretty self-explanatory, but a few parts are open to interpretation
A lonely road, crossed another cold state line
Miles away from those I love
Purpose hard to find
While I recall all the words you spoke to me
Can't help but wish that I was there
Back where I'd love to be, oh yeah
(Talking about how he's on the road touring and missing the ones he loves back home, and he's thinking about the words his girl spoke to him before he left, and wishing he was back)
Dear God the only thing I ask of you
Is to hold her when I'm not around
When I'm much too far away
We all need that person who can be true to you
But I left her when I found her
And now I wish I'd stayed
'Cause I'm lonely and I'm tired
I'm missing you again, oh no
Once again
(He's asking God to keep her safe from harm when he isn't there to protect her, he's saying we all need the one true to you but he left her and is regretting it.)
There's nothing here for me on this barren road
There's no one here while the city sleeps
And all the shops are closed
Can't help but think of the times I've had with you
Pictures and some memories will have to help me through, oh yeah
(Saying there's no future for him touring on these shows like this, and the only thing he thinks about is the times he's had with his girl, and how they are the only thing that can help him through it)
Dear God the only thing I ask of you is
To hold her when I'm not around,
When I'm much too far away
We all need that person who can be true to you
I left her when I found her
And now I wish I'd stayed
'Cause I'm lonely and I'm tired
I'm missing you again oh no
Once again
(He's asking God to keep her safe from harm when he isn't there to protect her, he's saying we all need the one true to you but he left her and is regretting it.)
Some search, never finding a way
Before long, they waste away
I found you, something told me to stay
I gave in, to selfish ways
And how I miss someone to hold
When hope begins to fade...
(Saying some search for their one true love but end up failing and dying out. He found his true love and knew he should stay but wanted to tour instead and is now greatly wishing he hadn't because he doesn't have her with him and is starting to lose hope that this tour is worth something.)
A lonely road, crossed another cold state line
Miles away from those I love
Hope is hard to find
Dear God the only thing I ask of you is
To hold her when I'm not around,
When I'm much too far away
We all need the person who can be true to you
I left her when I found her
And now I wish I'd stayed
'Cause I'm lonely and I'm tired
I'm missing you again oh no
Once again
(And these last two I've already interpreted, hope this helps anyone!) -

#3 top rated interpretation:The song is about the loved ones left behind while someone goes away like for the military or on a music tour. They are asking for god or whomever else to look over them and keep them safe and alive while they are away. R.I.P. Jimmy "the Rev" Sullivan

My dad loved avenged 7 fold and he would always listen to them but sadly he passed in 2017 and i miss him so much.
-
it reminds me of my dad and me. he died of suicide when i was 7 he hung himself. "Dear god all the only thing i ask of you is to hold her when im not around, when im much too far away"

I think of this song when I think of my ex girlfriend.i know it was true love, but I self sabotaged it and left her. Now 7 years later I'm lonely and sad, and wish I'd never left her. And now I don't think I'll ever find someone again. That's my interpretation of the song, just based on my own experience. God how I miss you Melanie.

My fiancée passed away back on sept 23, 2012 and today is January 22, 2020. He used to dearly love this song and would sing it all the time to me while he was still here. Last night I had a dream and I called him in this dream and he was sleeping, The person who answered the phone I told them to let him sleep just like the words I spoke when he was in the hospital at this time. little did I realize in the dream during that call was around the same time he had passed away. While in my dream I was upset and packing his things and looking at our pictures we had taken together. In my dream I had decided to take a drive in the car and this song was playing and right then I woke up to google the lyrics of this song and then I knew he was always with me and never left my side and asked god to watch over me and our only child. This is my interpretation of this song.

No one can be wrong on this. If you had an opinion on it you’re all correct in your own ways. But when I listen to it Thoughts of my late mother comes to mind “Hold her when I’m not around”. At least for now. 209-420.
-
It tells me a story about a man who has made a bad decision in his life & went to prison. He had wished he would have stayed with her & not left. If he hadn't gone he wouldn't be on this lonely road he's on.

This beautiful song is about how the band feel when they are in tour and how they miss their loved ones. As they say in the song: it's "a lonely road".
The band is asking God to take care of their loved ones during the tours and the hard life of a famous. -
I agree with all your basic interpretations but the only dispute I have is that he may have lost her because he says gave in to selfish ways. Military service and band touring is not selfish if it supports your loved ones. Maybe he is talking about an affair on the road?
-
I believe it is about the Afghan war.

I think it's basically telling you that when you don't follow your heart to your loved one(s) that you soon grow cold and you learn to regret it.. I agree with all of the answers above... this song is open to anyone's thoughts. You could interpret it however you wish to. But I think the basic concept is love and praying who you love is okay when you're not there with her/him/them.
On a lighter note: My boyfriend got me to listen to this song and I fell in love with it at first listen. It's just amazing and every word has meaning behind it. I love you, baby. -
Most (If not all) of the answers above are correct but here's what I think it's also about:
The Rev... They said "This song is dedicated to Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan" at the Welcome to the Family FL tour and then they played Dear God... May he rest in peace for all eternity... -
Simple its about missing the one you love and left behind while being in the military or just on the road.
