Blue October: Into the Ocean Meaning
Into the Ocean Lyrics
That sank when I fell overboard
My ship would leave the country
But I'd rather swim ashore
Without a life vest I'd be stuck again
Wish I was much more masculine
Maybe then I could learn to swim
Like 'fourteen miles...
-
OK, the meaning is totally obvious everyone is trying too hard to interpret it!... basically a man commits suicide by trying to drown himself in an ocean but when he actually acts on that decision he realizes it was a bad idea and that he has a lot to live for...especially a girl. once he's in the water he regrets his decision and tries to escape a horrible death but at first he thinks he has no chance of surviving until he thinks of that special girl. just thinking of her makes him "weightless"... He saves himself from death by doing all he can so he will survive and he can be with "her" (whoever she is...gf maybe wife)
-
This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

Okay, I'd just like to make this clear. There is NO metaphorical hidden meaning in this song. It is about a man who commits suicide by throwing himself into the ocean. There is no drug abuse, etc. It's amazing what people came come up with about something so straightforward.
-
I guess I took this song in a more metaphorical meaning than the obvious hints towards suicide... but I always thought it was about not being able to escape your problems. He can't swim and has fallen in the ocean, all he can do now is just let it carry him and hope for the best.
-
Yes, I'm sure it's about suicide to. I've heard somewhere they use water to represent suicide and the constant pain and sadness.

Justin said on Vh1 that it is about a person who jumped into the ocean and all that's happening and how he wishes that he never had.
-
This song is only what the first person said it was. It is about someone actually throwing themselves off of a huge ship to commit suicide.
-
I personally think this song is about a man who has lost the one he loves and can't live without her and starts to think about committing suicide. I think the coast guard and the lighthouse symbolize something or someone that could help him. When it says "I thought of just your face relaxed and floating into space" I think he means he can see her going to heaven.
-
yea pretty sure this song is about suicide and realizing what your leaving behind.
-
Justin is telling his audience that he really wants to commit suicide and has thought about it many times before. This song, as said by many, has stopped people from committing suicide. As Justin has told others, "If I can stop people from their thoughts of suicide, then why the fuck can I not stop the thoughts from myself.
-
The song really reminds me of suicide. He takes pills or something to kill himself (in the middle it says he thought of just her face and relaxed and floated into space) and then at the end of the song he wakes up realizing what he almost had done. Just my thoughts...
-
Justin tells us at the live shows that this song was written when he was on a cruise. He was standing on the prow of the ship, and started wondering what it would be like to jump off. This inspired him to write a song about someone who does that, but realizes as soon as he hits the water what a bad idea it was and how much he has to live for. The song is written from his point of view while he is there in the water.
