Breaking Benjamin: Dear Agony Meaning
Dear Agony Lyrics
I have found the perfect end
You were made to make it hurt
Disappear into the dirt
Carry me to heaven's arms
Light the way and let me go
Take the time to take my breath
I will end where I began
And I will...
-
Someone he loves is gone and the pain that he feels from them leaving agony.... So by saying he wants the agony to let go of him he want's to move on and get through with life...
-
When i first heard the song, i thought it was just an angsty song written for the hell of it. then i bought the album and listened to the other tracks, it changed my perspective completely. i think the song is all about an emotional trauma that wont leave him alone. that, no matter what he does, its putting him into a downward spiral.
-
At first I believed that this song is about the pain and confusion following the death of a loved one or family member, much like the lead singer and main songwriter did when composing this album. But now I see an equally strong meaning about the pain and confusion following the betrayal of a lover or good friend.
"I have nothing left to give/ I have found the perfect end" translates to "You have taken everything from me." For both messages equally, "it" could be the love the singer has, his pride, his happiness, et cetera.
"You were made to make it hurt/ Disappear into the dirt" In either case, he is sorry for loving and trusting that other person.
"Carry me to Heaven's arms/ Light the way and let me go" He is asking God or the betrayer to show some mercy and give him at least a little bit of a feeling of safety before abandoning him completely.
"Take the time to take my breath/ I will end where I began" This shows just how traumatized the singer is. He must have loved that person very much for them to take his breath away, or they are just that malicious that they will rob him of absolutely everything, leaving him "where I began": with absolutely nothing.
"And I will find the enemy within/ Cause I can feel it crawl beneath my skin." This is himself hating his own feelings: the enemy underneath his skin. He regrets loving or trusting the other person and now resigns himself to never do so again.
"Dear agony/ Just let go of me/ Suffer slowly/ Is this the way it's gotta be?" Here he is pleading, begging for someone, anyone to show mercy.
The rest of the lyrics can be easily aligned to one or both of the situations in the same ways as before, and I feel it is unnecessary to go any further. -
Continued...(accidentally hit submit)
othing left to give") and is begging for reprieve.
"Carry me to heaven's arms
Light the way and let me go
Take the time to take my breath
I will end where I began"
He just wants it to end, even if it results in his eventual death.
"And I will find the enemy within
Cuz I can feel it crawl beneath my skin"
He can feel it eating away at him from the inside.
"Dear agony, just let go of me
Suffer slowly- is this the way it's gotta be?"
He begs for an end to his pain, his "agony". He asks if he really must "suffer slowly", since the end result will probably be the same.
"Suddenly, the lights go out
Let forever drag me down
I will fight for one last breath
I will fight until the end"
He comes very, very close to death and can feel himself being pulled under- when he suddenly realizes he doesn't want to die, and decides to fight.
The second chorus is the same, with the addition of
"Don't bury me, faceless enemy
I'm so sorry
Is this the way it's gotta be?"
He pleads with his enemy, this thing causing him so much misery, and asks for his life to not be taken. He feels as if this is punishment for something he has done and is apologizing ("I'm so sorry"). Again, he asks if this is really how it must be.
"Leave me alone
God let me go
I'm blue and cold
Black sky will burn
Love pull me down
Hate lift me up
Just turn around
There's nothing left"
The bridge could be described as either the downward spiral of exhaustion and torment that he is thrown into that drives him to hatred and suicide, or the downward spiral of events leading up to his being killed by the "faceless enemy". In the second case, he would be fighting off an illness, in the first, it could be any number of things.
"Somewhere far beyond this world
I feel nothing anymore"
He is dead, and can no longer feel any of his pain or misery.
I believe that he is battling a long-term, painful illness, but the lyrics could also apply to lingering memories of a relationship that haunt him and won't leave him alone. -
The way I see it, it's about being in love with your pain. It's about some sort of inner pain--depression, physical, whatever--that has been with you for so long that it has come to be part of you. I think it's kind of like, you want to let go of this darkness but you just can't because it's part of who you are--"Because I can feel it crawl beneath my skin".The verses have this overtone of hopelessness in dealing with the pain and maybe seeing it as the only way to live, but the choruses and bridge seem to be asking to be rid of the pain. And then with "I feel nothing anymore..." Well, maybe the pain was defeated and it was all you truly were. Or maybe the pain is just numbing. That's what the song means to me, anyway.

I thought it was a song about someone who's lover died and he/she wanted to die too, since he felt responsible for his/her death.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway
