I thought it meant when he was visiting California he fell in love with a girl there but didn't pursue the relationship further because he thought maybe she wouldn't like him back.
"I'm so inclined to make you mine" but a part of him wanted to ask her out of be something more.
"You live, you learn" is the philosophy he adapts after closing that chapter in his life.
This is my opinion and others are free to interpret the song as they view it. I just think it's about a relationship that never really advanced although deep down he wanted it to be different. -
I think it's about one person saying to the other "I know it tough, but stick it out, but if we fight each other...well...'I don't think you wanna fuck with me.'
