   It's not about betrayal, the meaning is in the title. Paean is Gaelic for song of praise. He's just singing a song about how much he loves his girl. In my opinion it's strategically placed within the album because it comes after Hearts Don't Break Around Here. Ed falls in love with a girl, he goes all in to this relationship (Dive) and at first, as most relationships go, before the true emotional love comes there's a period where they just can't stop having sex and they're going through their little honeymoon period (Shape of You) and then in Perfect is where he really decides that this is the girl for her and she's the one he wants to spend his life with. Sadly, she leaves him and finds somebody else (Happier) but she realizes that she does love him and can't get over him (New Man) so they end up getting back together (Hearts Don't Break Around Here) and then How Would You Feel is Ed simply telling her he loves her. Maybe what he refers to in the song is how he didn't properly show his love for her in their first go around, and now he's trying to express the love he has. Just my thoughts...
