Ed loves his parents unconditionally, but he writes about his father's drinking problems, leaving home often, and frustrated family. He knows they have flaws and knows his home isn't good for him- but also is torn to leave the people he loves. Excellent song about the paradox that is loyalty and self-reliance.

this song of eds talks simply about him running away from home, his fathers had drinking problems and there was so many problems in his house , every simgle member of his families had flaws "Mama was the same
None of us are saints I guess that god knows that" so he decides to leave the toxic envirement he once calles home with a girl. but even though he is runing away he still loves his father from his skin to his bones but just couldn't bear life in that house.
