Ed Sheeran: Sunburn Meaning
Sunburn Lyrics
Though I try to see you differently
I tow the line
You see, I'm searching for what used to be mine
I saw your eyes
And then I saw her staring back at me
And I will try to find another one
Who suited me as well as her
I...

A song about being bereaved.
That is to say loss of a loved one: someone so very precious you cannot conceive of life without her. This could be loss of a girlfriend through a breakup of relationship; or mother, grandparent or - as in my case - my wife of a quarter of a century.
Although my wife died three years ago The song hit me like a freight train/ or me the lyrics are just so powerful. And so true. -
it's about how his ex left him with some good and bad memories and feelings. hence the lines 'she was mine, i was hers and all that's in between' , and 'don't drop me in it's not my turn' , meaning that 'alice' is dumping ed and throwing him back into the sea with all the other fish

No this song isn’t about his ex. It’s actually about his Grandmother. Unfortunately she passed away and he wrote a song for her to remind everyone how she help him up and was always there for him.
I’m a kid and ik better than any of you. Cause.. IM A REAL ED FAN!!! -
I actually think it's not that.
Yes, the song is about his ex and how he can't get over her, but perhaps when he looked into the eyes of his current girlfriend and she saw that he was still in love with his ex, it drove his current girlfriend insane.
Hence, the following reference:
"And I saw your eyes, and I saw Alice staring back at me..."
Now, I haven't looked too hard to see whether Ed's ex's name actually is/was Alice, but what if the Alice reference is actually to Alice in Wonderland's level of insanity?
Sorry, I just can't see the Alice reference related to anything but Alice in Wonderland, maybe that's just me. -
This is song is about Ed's ex...Alice.
They were together but they didn't try hard in order to stay together. -
he has met another girl but is haunted by his ex girlfriend Alice.
'I saw your eyes and i saw alice staring back at me'
'and i will find another one who has suited me as well as you'
he thought Alice was the perfect girlfriend.
basically he is haunted by Alice and cannot start another relationship because he misses her too much.
'you scar and leave me like a sun burn'
so she has scarred him and broke up with him and he his trying to move on but he can't because she has scared him and there is no way of him forgetting about her.
the bit that says
'we never even talked, we never even tried'
he is regretting their breakup saying that it could have worked if they put effort in into it. -
This song is about Alice (Ed's ex-girlfriend)
"I saw your eyes, and I saw Alice staring back at me."
It's kind of obvious. And this is a VERY sad song.
"So I will try, to find another one who suited me...".
He's going to try again at love, and hopefully find
someone who is as amazing and perfect as she was.
He has to leave her, because he can't work it out. -
I know most people see this song as a song for a lover, and only a lover, but I don't. I see it as a song that can be for anybody that was important in your life, even though in Ed's case it might have been for a lover.
"Your not her, but I try to see you differently."
Betrayed somehow, and you finally find those new people in your life, but you keep seeing the person that betrayed and forgot you. You want to see them for who they truly are, but in the back of your mind you keep picturing the one that left you behind.
"I'm searching for what used to be mine."
That feeling of belonging, that somebody is there. The person forgot about you, you felt so alone, and you want to feel like somebody is there again.
"I saw your eyes, and I saw her looking back at me."
Again, you keep seeing the person from your past in the new person in your life. It's haunting you in the back of your mind that the same thing is going to happen.
"And I will try to find another one, who suited me as well as her."
You will try to find that new person in your life that was just as good as the old one, before the old one changed.
The song goes on and on, but it's the same meaning. Somebody left you behind, and their memory is like a scar that can never go away. You want it to, but it just can't. You are trying to move on, but the scar won't go away, and it's like a sunburn. The memory hurts, it stings. But still, you miss the person from your memory.
I don't know if I'm right, but this is what I thought while listening to the song. -
In my opinion he's singing this song to his first love. He tells her about the relation with his ex, about how much he loved her and how well he treated her "If she would cry,I would shelter her and keep her from the darkness that will be". This is to demonstrate his first love that he would love her and treat her in the same way, but things aren't easy, because in a first time it didn't go well "I've moved far away from you and I want to see you here beside me dear, but things aren't clear" So he insists in the fact things didn't go well because "When we never even tried, we never even talked,we never even thought in the long run, whenever it was painful, whenever I was away,I'd miss you"
So summarized, he is asking for a new oportunity with the excuse that in a first time they didn't even tried it. -
I kinda see it as.. like, two sides of a person, his girlfriend. It seems when he refers to the girl as 'her', he is talking about her good side, or the person she used to be. When he is talking about her in second person, 'you' is the person that she turned into, the person he didn't want to be with.
'Don’t drop me in
It’s not my turn
If you cut deep
Then I might learn
You scar and leave me
Like a sunburn'
He's not ready to leave her yet, either. This also includes the 'i moved far away and i missed you.' And if she leaves him now, then he'll be broken hearted.
Idk, I'm probably way off.
